How far would you go to accommodate a vegan?

In a few weeks we're hosting a bbq for my Husband's birthday.

We have about a dozen guests coming, one of whom is vegan. As we don't normally buy vegan food I've started looking at what we'd normally buy and what is and isn't vegan. To make sure the vegan has the same variety of choice as everyone else I'm going to have to spend quite a bit on alternatives. As we have the non vegan alternatives we won't be eating the vegan versions, so they'll either go home with the guest or be thrown.

How much would you accommodate a vegan?

Would I be unreasonable to provide vegan burger with vegan cheese, plus bun and nothing else or do I need to go the whole hog and get vegan sausages, vegan condiments and vegan coleslaw?

Ps they are vegan by choice, not for medical reasons

Well I could certainly provide that. Mind you, I’d probably vomit all over the place which would probably give people the idea.

Sure you would - what’s the name of your condition?

Look, I don’t care what you want to eat, I actually have nothing against vegans at all, my problem is with the double standards, not just from you, but all over this thread.

kitsuneghost · 27/06/2023 14:28

You probably already buy vegan food
Vegans do not eat meat or dairy - Is everything in your fridge meat and dairy?
No need to visit some 'special' aisle or section

The other visitors will be quite happy with risottos, curries, pasta dishes, fajitas etc.. I'm quite sure.

@Naunet "Sure, right after you bring the doctors note that says you can’t eat meat"

I'm an omnivore, personally. But if I have vegetarians or vegans coming to my house I cook vegetarian or vegan because I can't be arsed to cook two different meals. Nobody has ethical or religious reasons for eating meat. So for me to cook you meat you need to prove that you can't, medically have one meat free meal.

Don’t worry, I would have no interest in coming to a vegan BBQ and then demanding you cook me meat, it just seems to be the other way around that it’s acceptable behaviour.

Really?! Ayou not a human, designed to eat meat? I could argue the same, I am extremely anaemic, I need meat in my diet - doctors orders.

@Naunet

we are not designed to eat meat
you can get iron from other sources not just meat. Do you think all vegetarians and vegans are walking around anaemic? They’re not.

Oh my god, did you seriously just claim humans aren’t designed to eat meat?! 😂

By the way, I had an iron infusion yesterday, on the info leaflet they gave me, about half the page was dedicated to vegans and vegetarians - why do you think that would be?

You’re deluded. If we weren’t designed to eat meat, we wouldn’t, you know like how you can put a steak in front of a chinchilla and it won’t eat it. If you want to be vegan, good for you, seriously, but denying nature just makes you look bonkers.

5128gap · 27/06/2023 14:37

If you had the usual accompanying food, salad, bread, jacket potato that would do me just fine. If you'd gone to the trouble of a meat free sausage or burger I'd be touched by your thoughtfulness, though typically I dont eat them for health reasons.
Its my choice to be vegan and I don't expect it to inconvenience anyone else. In fact the less people cater for me the easier it is to avoid foods I don't particularly want to eat like the fake meats.
I may be in a minority though as the eating aspect of an occasion doesn't matter much to me and I would happily eat beforehand and just enjoy the company.

AdoraBell · 27/06/2023 14:37

I would use separate dish/tinfoil/aluminium tray and put a vegan burger and chopped veg on the BBQ, leave salads undressed and put pots/bottles of dressing on a table. If bread for burgers go on the BBQ I’d use the separate dish for the vegan’s bread.

ElizabethBest · 27/06/2023 14:38

Chickpeas, chilli, coriander, cumin, red onion, lemon, flour. Shove it all in the blender, then make it into patties and just stick them on some tin foil in the bbq. Cheap as chips, delicious whether you are vegan or not, and looks like you've made lots of effort without actually having to make lots of effort!

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 27/06/2023 14:39

Baked bananas are a great pudding. With melted vegan chocolate in them.

@Naunet

not true
just because we can doesn’t mean we should
dogs will eat chocolate if it’s in front of them but we all
know it’s really bad for them

egowise · 27/06/2023 14:40

When catering to a vegan, I have less meat options, and add vegan, usually 2 meat options to one vegan, and so everyone can eat the vegan food too and this always goes down very well.

I also try to match the meat/vegan options as far as I can. I have done a vegan charcuterie/BBQ many times.

But you didn’t say we shouldn’t, you said we’re not designed to, two different things. We can eat it because were designed to. Whether we should or not is a different argument. Anyway, I don’t want to derail any further, so let’s leave that discussion.

CurlewKate · 27/06/2023 14:46

@Naunet Can you explain in very simple terms, why catering for people's ethical or religious requirements is hypocritical?

It’s not, that wasn’t my claim - look back at the posts I originally replied to and you’ll see what I find hypocritical.

Some answers on this thread have baffled me.

Do people not like their friends? Are those refusing to cater to their friends genuinely like this in real life? I love my friends and want them to enjoy themselves. How difficult is it to pick up some vegan options when you're buying your meat!?

Seriously, baffled right now.

It's not that simple at all in the case of a BBQ.

You'd need an entirely separate set of cooking utensils (expensive) and somewhere separate to cook the food as majority of vegans wouldn't food cooked on the same grill as meat.

CurlewKate · 27/06/2023 15:46

@Meeting That's one of the reasons I cook vegetarian/vegan for everyone if I have vegetarian/vegan guests. Not the main reason though. The main reason is that I can't be arsed to cook two menus.

Do you like your friends? Then make a bit of effort.
Cook their food first. It really is not difficult.

I don't have any vegan friends.

If I did, as I said earlier, they could eat the salads and sides.

mistymoon7 · 27/06/2023 16:19

Speaking as an ex vegan, they really won't be expecting the same range as everyone else. You could always make your own vegan coleslaw if you feel up to it, just use Hellman's vegan mayo, it tastes exactly like the regular mayo so everyone could eat it. Similarly you could make potato salad with it.

WTAF? It’s a problem with hormones. Why are you so desperate to deny that eating meat for some people can make them extremely ill. Are you this much of a twat about nut allergies?

What double standards do I have?? You sound absolutely unhinged. I suggest you seek help.
