dottiedodah · 24/06/2023 12:09

OK so like everyone love a good bargain as much as the next person! Had some great stuff from EBay. Monsoon dress started off at £9.00 .Ended up £36.00! Just seems to have gone away from original promise of a good bargain when almost shop price ! YABU Can get as much as they can .YANBU Gone way OTT can get better in shop!

OP posts:

How much would the dress have cost new? If it was £50 new the. YANBU but if it was £90 new then that's still a bargain

ChristmasKraken · 24/06/2023 12:10

It's an auction site. So things go for the price people are willing to pay.

Riverlee · 24/06/2023 12:10

That surprises me. Compared to the past, I rarely get decent bids on ebay now, and it usually sells for the listed price.

SheAppears · 24/06/2023 12:11

That's the whole point of eBay though. It's an auction, highest bidder gets the item.

TolkiensFallow · 24/06/2023 12:12

Second hand is definitely getting more expensive - often I see things in the sale then on eBay at a higher price.

charity shops are the same - I keep seeing £20 for a cardi and think “I’d rather have a new one” or those H&M kids dresses that are £2.99 in the shops new for £4 second hand in a charity shop!

Caterpillau · 24/06/2023 12:14

I've noticed on marketplace people listing prices only 10-20% lower than new and those things are selling. Never would have happened this time last year!

Must be the COL effect. Many more people are looking to save a few quid here and there, and people new to selling are listing high prices, the second-hand 'culture' is changing.

NancyAndLee · 24/06/2023 12:17

If people are prepared to pay up to £36 for the dress, then that is what the dress is worth.

That's how auctions work.

Fightyouforthatpie · 24/06/2023 12:21

I strongly suspect there is a lot of shill bidding on ebay for some items/sellers.

I still get some bargains but I've noticed some items seem to only attract bids when I have already bid - and then disappear and are relisted :)

jane1956 · 24/06/2023 12:33

I do try to support local shops but everything we have tried to buy lately is not available so have had to buy off ebay, very sad

darkmodeon · 24/06/2023 12:35

This is how auctions work.

Skinnermarink · 24/06/2023 12:37

I’ve got six maternity dresses on eBay at the moment and have started everything off at at 99p. Last time I did it I got £27 for a New Look dress that I paid £22 for new 🤷🏻‍♀️ not me that sets the price. I’ll be very happy with a few mad bids on my current offerings, I need the money!

User163876621 · 24/06/2023 12:41

I only ever buy the non auction items on eBay, I couldn't be bothered waiting for an auction to end and unless the item was a one off it's not really worth it, especially not clothes

Badbudgeter · 24/06/2023 12:43

Try Vinted. I’ve bought a bunch of stuff on there recently boden/ monsoon/ anthropology nothing was more than£10 It was £14 after buyer protection / p and p.

Daddydog · 24/06/2023 12:43

Its also annoying when every listing on marketplace or eBay proudly shows off the current RRP price. Knowing they never paid that in the first place it's hard to take a listing for an old item with no warranty or guarantee.

Nomorenonbinary · 24/06/2023 12:49

Isn't Monsoon quite expensive new?

DragonDoor · 24/06/2023 12:50

When did eBay ever promise a good bargain?? It’s an auction website.

People may feel satisfied that their bid won, but in my experience buying clothes second hand or in charity shops or from gumtree has always have been cheaper.

Yes, I’m sure you could get bargains on EBay and still can, but the prices are related to demand.

CaroleSinger · 24/06/2023 12:51

Depends on what you see as a bargain really. eBay is also a business for the sellers. I only use but it now because there are too many bidders who win then just don't pay. I had one message me last week asking if I'd consider £8 for a £10 item. Yes you can get a bargain but a lot of people want more than a bargain. They want it free.

Skinnermarink · 24/06/2023 12:53

It’s the postage costs really, it’s worth it if you buy a bundle like with kid’s clothes, or combine items from the same seller, but postage costs are quite high for something one off. I had someone message to say would I be able to send a dress as a ‘large letter’ and no I couldn’t because it’s not for Sylvanian Families.

marshmallowhearts · 24/06/2023 12:56

I know what you mean OP. I went on eBay today to see if there were any one hundred stars short kimonos and there’s a load for £50 + shipping, but they’re £48 new from the company themselves!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/06/2023 12:58

That's why I now buy on Vinted
Immediate sale and even including the price protection it's cheaper than eBay
That's the process of an auction though and because money is tight, everyone wants to think they have a bargain, even if it's not!

Why 'proudly'. Surely it's helpful to know what the rrp was. How do you know they didn't pay full price? Why are you so spiky towards sellers?

AtomicBlondeRose · 24/06/2023 13:28

@CaroleSinger offering £8 for a £10 item is absolutely normal on Vinted so I’d take that into account when setting eBay prices from now on.

Paq · 24/06/2023 13:29

Yep. EBay is mad. I’ve defected to Vinted.

And the prize for the most profound comment goes to... 🤣

Lacucuracha · 24/06/2023 13:58

Sorry but this is insane. Are you expecting sellers to prevent their items selling for the best possible price?

I don’t sell anything below a certain price, it’s not worth my time to sell something for a few quid.

Just seems to have gone away from original promise of a good bargain

No one ever made this promise.
