And the prize for the most profound comment goes to... 🤣

To be fair, it’s the OP who doesn’t seem to get that, so someone needs to state the obvious.

TheoTheopolis23 · 24/06/2023 14:04

Items go for what someone is prepared to pay. They might really like that item and not be a be able get it cheaper or at all elsewhere.

It's hard to get things in common sizes even new in high street shops, all the middle sizes tend to go.

TheoTheopolis23 · 24/06/2023 14:06

Aldo people will pay for certain labels and fabrics, up to three quarters of original price if it's in decent condition.

If you get a bargain, cool - I see it more as matching a buyer with an item, and if they're prepared to pay what I want for it (or close toit), great.

TheoTheopolis23 · 24/06/2023 14:13

Also I find some buyers have an almost predatory attitude, with the assumption all sellers are desperate and theyre doing them a favour to buy something.. . And make low ball offers

I'm currently living not to be desperate to sell - the stuff can sit there til it sells. If it's taking absolute yonks, I'll reduce it or give it to a charity shop. If it's not, it'll stat there til it sells, which they mostly do, sooner or later.

Buyers aren't doing you a favour. They also seem oblivious to the number of watchers (to my memory buyers can see that), making low ball offers on items with dozens of watchers which are therefore likely to go sooner rather than later. Ive rarely had a low ball offer on an item that didn't sell soon after for full price. They have the same attitude on marketplace etc and I honestly think it's why people on there end up giving stuff away rather than dealing with them.

ilovemydog123 · 24/06/2023 14:22

I buy off Vinted now so much cheaper and you can get things new with tags

darkmodeon · 24/06/2023 14:26

I sell pretty low value items and include "free postage" in the price. I still get ridiculous offers which would cost me money! People forget postage costs money.

Buyers can't always see how many watchers there are. I always look for that. It seems to be arbitrary whether it's visible or not. At least, I can't work out the criteria.

yipeeyiyay · 24/06/2023 13:11

Why 'proudly'. Surely it's helpful to know what the rrp was. How do you know they didn't pay full price? Why are you so spiky towards sellers?

Yep, I’ve mostly paid full price for the item before selling on.

I’m now doing less impulse buying to try and cut down on my purchasing mistakes but I’d say many eBay buyers have enjoyed a very good bargain from me in the last year or two.

That's odd. I haven't looked into that.

In any case, the items I get low-ball offers on are generally "label" items and I don't understand why buyers wouldn't guess that there will probably be plenty of interest and that low ball offers won't be gratefully received, as such.

They're also offering (in the messages) with no make offer option in the listing; so again, I don't know why they think unsolicited low ball offers on label items will be gratefully received. There seems to be a general "I want, so you make it happen" attitude; like sellers are there to supply their high end, high street or designer clothes for way less than the market value because.... I'm not sure what the reason is, other than their ego and brass necked Ness

Lacucuracha · 24/06/2023 18:11

I agree low ball offers from buyers are annoying, but so are low discount offers from sellers on items I’m watching.

I’m having to unwatch a lot of items because the seller sends me 5% off offer.

Other sellers have sent 25% off offer, which I’ve snapped up.

The sizes might be gone though

lljkk · 24/06/2023 20:57

Do you actually need blouses or Monsoon dress?

35965a · 24/06/2023 21:01

If people really want something they’ll pay for it, even if it’s above the RRP. Maybe the size is sold out or that colour is no longer available. EBay was never really specifically about bargains.

xsquared · 24/06/2023 23:02

For an auction, the item will go for whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I guess some posters have never sold on ebay before and don't realise how much effort it is for the seller for little gain.

It is the reason why I won't put anything up for auction for less than £5.

Ebay takes 13% of the final selling price including postage, plus 30p.

If I were to sell something for £1 and charge £1.60 for postage, which is the cost of a large letter, my final takings would be less than 40p.

I sell on Vinted and set lower prices there, but high value and popular items, I would put on eBay.

dottiedodah · 25/06/2023 07:43

IIjkk Well I like Monsoon as it is well cut and flattering.Go on here and there(Not all the time ) for some bargains .The dress was a Sundress and I find them cool to wear .

It's simple economics of supply and demand. I must have been active both buying and selling on ebay for 20 years (can't remember how long, but it's a long time - probably soon after it began). Even back then you could sell things close to, or over, shop prices.

The thing is, that some people don't have a good range of shops nearby, or don't have time/transport to go shopping, so Ebay is convenient for them. There've certainly been a few times when I've sold things for more than I bought them new - things that were still widely available in the shops at the time, but obviously, the buyer couldn't/wouldn't actually go to the shops themselves to buy direct.

Nowadays, with widespread internet shopping, that's less of the case, but we're now in the realms of shops not selling what people want anymore, so sometimes, buying "as new" or "BNWT" is the only way people can get specific types of item. Eg, my 82 year old mother liked M&S cardigans - they don't sell her style anymore, so for the last few years, we've been buying from ebay, either worn exc cond, or BNWT (bought but left in wardrobe etc) - prices being very similar to what they'd be in the shop IF M&S still sold them! I bought a lot of Joules stuff a while ago (socks, blouses etc) when I won a voucher in a competition - I basically just bought stuff because the voucher was about to expire - I never really wore much of it and most was still BNWT - I've now sold it all and every single item sold for more than it's label price - that's simply because the designs/styles weren't available in their shops anymore.

Perhaps the shops need to pay a bit more attention to what people actually want to buy, and perhaps they should put more stock in their High Street shops so that people can go and buy it. Ebay is getting expensive due to lack of supply by the shops - the shops who are complaining about lack of customers!!

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 25/06/2023 08:08

Are you one of those people who think that people who sell on eBay should be willing to make hardly any money at all? I sell a lot on eBay and some buyers are just cheeky. I'll put something on at £3.99 buy it now - and people still want money off that item. I offer free postage and people still think offering £1 is acceptable - it's not. I take time to make sure my listings have as much information as possible, I put a lot more info than most sellers in my category - I know I'm charging reasonable prices because people come back again and again, and yet some buyers still think they should be getting something for nothing. Also, the items I sell are not items that a person 'needs', they are definitely 'want' items. It's not like me refusing a stupid offer will affect their life negatively. Some buyers need to realise that it takes time and effort to place an item up for sale. I even explain to buyers who make stupid offers that I have to pay postage and packaging costs plus eBay fees - add into that the promotion percentage I pay to make sure my listings are noticed by as many people as possible and it all adds up!
I don't do many auctions, but good luck to any sellers who can make a decent amount - it's tough out there at the moment, just because people sell on eBay doesn't mean they have to just make pennies on an item.

juneybean · 25/06/2023 08:31

Definitely prefer vinted for selling. I always offer free postage on ebay since they charge fees on postage and foolish me started bidding at £3 and I ended up losing money after fees. It's not worth it.

TheoTheopolis23 · 25/06/2023 08:37

Do you not get any 70/80% off fees offers?

A lot of sellers only list when they're on (every fortnight, at the weekend usually).

Have to say, it's a shame that eBid has never really taken off as a selling platform. They did (I don't know if they still do) a fantastic offer where you could sign up and pay a flat fee and get free listings for life with no selling fees either - the problem is nothing ever sells on there, in my experience. If items did sell, it would mean that many sellers could afford to list items for cheaper than eBay and not pay as much in fees and both sellers and buyers would be happier.

meatbaseddessert · 25/06/2023 08:58

I used to do a lot of yoga and buy a lot of yoga leggings from LuLuLemon and Sweaty Betty.
I'd often do a clear out and sell them used on eBay and they often sell for up to twice as much as I'd paid new. Especially if they were limited editions.
