Newsnight just reported that according to one survey 8 out of 10 people are dissatisfied with the way the government are running the country, rising to 9 out of 10 amongst people with mortgages.

Who are the 2 out of 10 people who are satisfied? I appreciate political views differ but can even Tory voters think it’s going well? You might not want to vote Labour (or anyone else) but I can’t understand the thinking that says they’re doing a good job.

YADNBU but somebody will be along in a minute to tell you that you are.
They couldn't run a bath.

I met a woman in the shopping centre who wanted to tell me that the people who complained about Boris were just bitter and that everything is fine, and people complain too much. She also went on to tell me about her entire life and how rich her children are, and then patronised me about reading with my child reminding me that I needed to give my child books to read… I think she saw what I looked like and wanted to have an argument, so kept saying stuff to get a rise out of me. I think it’s people like that woman in the shopping centre who are satisfied with the Tory party.

nutbrownhare15 · 23/06/2023 22:59

There are plenty of Tories out there and at least some of them will be thinking it's not the govts fault that they've had to deal with various external.events, in order to justify their vote at the last and next election. E.g. it's all the fault of COVID, remoaners, Ukraine etc. Rishi Sunak is quite likeable and they probably don't like the idea of labour winning so are supporting this narrative of the government has done ok re: COVID or that Sunak is tackling the mess left by.Truss and Johnson (which is what the Tories are hoping for, portrayal of a new/competent start)

IveShaggedSomeMingers · 23/06/2023 23:02

The people who have no mortgages, and who have enough money to not worry about the rising cost of living .

AsIfIWish · 23/06/2023 23:04

My mum is Tory (and well-off) and if we ever have discussions like this she will say, "you don't remember what it was like when labour drove the country into the ground,". i.e. the Tories are still better than the rest because they're not failing as badly (in her opinion).

Like, no, but I'm living this current crap and I can read up on history so I still think I'm being fair.

I do know another Tory who reasonably thinks it's going to pot, though.

That's me then. I'm 60 so no mortgage comfortable but not rich and I think they are utterly shit.

But surely, even people in this position must have friends and family who aren't. They must use the roads and the nhs and other council services and see them being run into the ground. I'm older and have no mortgage but I remember what it was like when I did and I am angry on behalf of young people now who are struggling. You would need to have no empathy or compassion at all to think I'm alright jack, the Tories are doing a splendid job.

I don't have a mortgage, and am surviving reasonably well considering the absolute shit job that this government has made of things, so please don't think that people like me can't see the mess they've made, and I DEFINITELY will NOT be voting Tory when a general election finally comes around.

RudsyFarmer · 23/06/2023 23:17

I might be mad but I honestly don’t think Labour will get in in the next election. I think people talk the talk outside the ballot box but once they’re alone they will vote Tory. They are the only party willing to talk about the hot button topics and express unpopular opinions.

Olderandolder · 23/06/2023 23:18

Lockdown was appalling. They behaved like dictators. Destroyed the economy. But Labour supported it and some Labour MPs wanted to make it worse.

Maybe maybe Jeremy Corbyn personally would have been less evil. Ie maybe not arrested Piers Corbyn.

Corbyn would have grown the State in other ways but that was the worst Govt power grab I could imagine here barring war.

Olderandolder · 23/06/2023 23:23

People struggling with the cost of living.

If you didn’t protest against Lockdown, why not? I was terrified of the economic destruction and hunger it would cause.

I still am scared. Lifestyle expectations reduced to: I want to continue to be able to eat and I don’t want my kids sent to war.

Zwicky · 23/06/2023 23:26

If you don’t have a mortgage, still have an nhs dentist and are in good health, don’t have to use public transport much (or pay for it) and don’t travel far by car and have relatively low food costs anyway then you aren’t very impacted. So basically retired middle and high earners who live in nice suburbs in their own home, who have bus passes and don’t have to produce 21 meals a week for 6 adult size eaters using only mince, Aldi super 6 and porridge oats. There’s quite a lot of them.

IveShaggedSomeMingers · 23/06/2023 23:38

I don't mean all people like you, @UpaladderwatchingTV , but those people who are like you but who will always vote Tory.

The next election will probably result in a coalition.

Thedogscollar · 23/06/2023 23:42

@Zwicky
No you are wrong see posts upthread from the very people you describe. We all think they are bloody awful.
I have never voted for them in my life and never will. They are the party for the elite always have been. I want a fairer society not this I'm all right attitude that many Tory voters have.

People that bang on about the mortgage rates in the 80s yeah it was shit with negative equity etc but I think it's worse now as people are trapped in a rental market paying way over the odds for a rental that if they were paying a mortgage on would be far less.
Social housing since Thatchers day has all but virtually stopped. Waiting lists for a council house are years long. The whole thing is mess, as OP said why would anyone vote for this shower of incompetents.

Please don't think everyone over 50 thinks they are doing a good job. They aren't. Never judge a book by it's cover.

millymollymoomoo · 24/06/2023 00:21

loads of people were happy with the (completely unnecessary) lockdowns which added massive debt and crippled the economy for no reason whstsoever

if labour had been in power this would have been much much worsr

there will also be many more strikes ( hard to believe as there’s so bloody many now)

snd the Bank of England is completely independent and the govt hold no control over it - something handed to it by Gordon brown

SheSaidHummingbird · 24/06/2023 01:20

@ArtimisGame Why on earth were you talking to some bonkers, judgemental woman in the shopping centre? Why didn't you just walk away?

My FIL votes tory. He has his mortgage paid off. He recently broke himself and had to go to hospital. He was on the floor for 2 hours prior to the ambulance getting there. 'People wasting time' (not under-funded).

He was on a gurney in the hospital for over 7 hours waiting for a bed - not underfunding - people who didn't need to be there.

He was trapped in hospital due to the care not being available to release him - the staff were lovely and it was so clean.

If the blinkers are on - the blinkers are on.

(The pension is solid, the house is paid off - every month he makes a profit - even with the cost of living.)

My Dad re Boris Johnson ‘awww, we’ll he’s doing his best…’

Me ‘well his best just isn’t good enough then!’

He’ll continue voting Tory (final salary pension, retired at 50 (now 75), house was paid off before retirement, he wants for nothing. I’m severely disabled and struggling, he doesn’t see it (or care apparently).

greenspaces4peace · 24/06/2023 03:00

maybe they've been around the block enough to realize that politics really never changes no matter who is in charge.

Zwicky · 24/06/2023 06:52

@Thedogscollar I’m not “wrong” ffs just because some (or even lots of) people “over 50” (I would say most retired and paid off mortgage people are well over 65 - retiring at 50 is almost unheard of) are left wing, socially aware and want a fairer society. LOADS of comfortably off people in good health are minimally impacted by poor government and people who own their own homes, don’t have high transport costs, live somewhere nice enough to attract an NHS dentist, are in relatively good health (helped by wealth so often) and don’t have dependent children at home sucking up their food budget like a swarm of locusts are minimally impacted. Most of these people are older, retired, middle and higher earners. This age group are statistically more likely to vote for a conservative candidate. The over 65s are the ONLY age group who are polled to vote conservative over other parties (42% con vs 29% lab vs lab 46% con 27% for 45-64 yo) Admittedly these are “since 2020” figures by The Economist rather than June 23 figures but I’d be interested to know what has changed to make these figures demographics “wrong” and change the demographic of Conservative voters ( and who are the people who are voting if not their core base? Single mothers aged 25-35 from Liverpool?).

Theunamedcat · 24/06/2023 07:25

People who work for the government

The government have family's and friends who will not be objective

mondaytosunday · 24/06/2023 07:50

I think maybe some people realise the country doesn't operate in isolation from the rest of the world. And maybe think that Labour (or whatever) would not be able to change much. So not so much that they are 'satisfied', but do not think anyone else could do any better?
