To think that if you pay for a paper bag in a shop it should be unbranded?

Given how much money shops charge for a paper bag when you buy things from shops?

Ultimately there's a good idea on here I think.

If the shop has a plastic bag that's environmentally unhealthy and they charge they shouldn't be allowed to advertise.

If they provide a biodegradable/ recyclable bag for free they should be able to advertise.

It'll go a long way to making retailers who rake in billions think about their carbon footprint.

What to do about bags for life I don't know? Cheap ones can have advert of shop but expensive ones can't?

How does that work @GulesMeansRed ? here McDonald's automatically put it in a paper bag, they don't ask you

They charge for a paper bag now. So when I order I say I don’t want one… they usually give it to me anyway!

When I could get out to go shopping, I used to take named bags for one supermarket to another one (like Sainsburys to Morrisons) just to make a point. The checkout operators didn't like
It at all, a couple even tried to force me to buy their bags, I told them if they wanted me to use their bags, they could give them me for nothing, they soon shut up

Really?

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/06/2023 08:26

That almost certainly never happens.

CreeperBoom · 25/06/2023 08:41

I remember the days when the drawstring carrier back from river island was the most coveted item going. If you had one, you would take it to school as a PE or book bag to show off.

NancyJoan · 25/06/2023 08:48

If companies want me to do their advertising for them they need to pay me

This argument is baffling to me. Do you have such a high opinion of yourself that you genuinely believe that a passerby will spot you swinging your Peacocks carrier and then, dazzled by your incredible style, will rush through the doors to try and be just like you? With such a huge ego to carry around all the time, you hopefully have a substantial collection of bags for life.

LadyEloise1 · 25/06/2023 09:04

Holland and Barrett charge for paper bags in their Dublin branches- well the one I was in.
It saves them money but they put it down to helping the planet.
Just like our council who no longer do much maintenance on grassed areas or flower beds.
Saves them money by not employing someone to keep the place tidy looking.

I’ve always thought the same thing. I used to work with a woman who would bang on about not wanting to do ‘free advertising’ for shops. The thing is I think most fashion brands would pay her good money not to wear their clothes or carry their bags.

I have never ever had this issue. I tend to take another store's bag so they don't try and charge me for taking one of their bags. We have a few from different shops living in the boot of my car. They have never tried to sell me their bags. Where on earth do you live that they would even care about your shopping bags?

Why, just why? Why do you need to "make a point"? They do know about their competition you know, and they all employ people specifically to work on customer loyalty. I don't think your petty little "point" makes one iota of difference.

As someone who works in a supermarket nobody gives a shit what you take your shopping home in. The only people I take any interest in judging are the ones who buy a whole basket of shopping, realise they have forgotten their bags but refuse to buy a new one so then spend the next 20 minutes holding up the queue as they try to figure out a way to stuff all of their shopping into their various too small pockets and juggle it in their arms all for the sake of saving 30p. If it was done as a moral refusal against plastic waste I would applaud it but, as they always moan at tell you it's just because they refuse to pay 30p for something they think should be free.

Plus, regardless of which bag brand you use, unless it's an Hérmes duffle bag, you've spent more on our shop than you did on the bag which is all the stakeholders at Head Office care about

Justhereforaibu1 · 25/06/2023 18:34

Jeez OP have you nothing better to complain about

Myn · 25/06/2023 18:51

Does anybody else find since they have had to pay for shopping bags they do less spontaneous shopping? I often think Oh I could do with that but I don't have a bag so I leave it or buy less.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/06/2023 19:02

@Myn not at all. If it's a supermarket, and I'm in the car, I'll pick up a box on the way round and use that instead. If I need a bag, I'll buy one, but I'll try not to, not because of the cost, but because I think we should be reusing bags where possible.

If you reuse a bag once, that halves the bags you use. If you reuse it 9 times, it cuts the number of bags in circulation by 90%, ie a huge amount.

I can't remember if they charge for clothes bags, but somewhere along the way it made me change my behaviour because, while I was smugly reusing my bags for life for grocery shopping, and judging those who CBA and got a load of new bags each time, I was letting the shops give/sell me new bags when clothes shopping and while I realised that I reused as many as possible as bin bags, or if I sold something on ebay, I was still taking bags unnecessarily, especially as the bags many clothes shops use are too nice to throw away, but not particularly useful to reuse.

So I now carry folding cloth bags that are used for clothes shopping, not that I buy that many clothes before the 'you should buy it all second hand on Vinted' brigade wade in. Everything I buy is worn for years until it wears out, I probably buy about 10 items a year if that, and I don't have the time or energy for trawling charity shops or Vinted in the vain hope that they'll have what I need in the right size that actually fits when it arrives. Not sorry.

Nope, I shop the same amount as before, the only difference is that I am now more conscious of making sure I have a reusable bag with me at all times.

Whereas before I might intentionally take bags if I knew I was going to the supermarket, now I always have at least one small foldable shopping bag in my handbag, just in case l, as I found the only time I was buying bags was when I would go out to do one errand - eg take something to the post office or attend an opticians appointment - and end up thinking "Oh I need XYZ, I'll just nip to ABC Shop and get it now while I'm here" only to realise I didn't have any bags because I wasn't intending to shop.

So now I keep a small shopping bag in a little pouch in the bottom of my handbag for those occasions but now, since the default is to use reusables, on the very rare occasion I do need to buy a bag I don't feel bad about doing so as it's a rarity rather than the norm.

I have stolen a badge from a Volkswagen and stuck it over the top on my car. That'll learn 'em.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/06/2023 07:34

Yea, just carry a reusable bag with you when you go out, it's not hard.

jc12689 · 26/06/2023 20:30

I agree I don't drive a car because the manufacturers insist on putting their company logo all over them.
