To think that if you pay for a paper bag in a shop it should be unbranded?

Given how much money shops charge for a paper bag when you buy things from shops?

OP posts:

Boots charged me a fortune for a paper bag which ripped straight away. Also Morrisons

Some people would have heart failure if they found out just how much morrisons charge for a bag, even the paper one.

dudsville · 23/06/2023 08:06

Posting for the update.

And when you buy a pack of mushrooms, shouldn't they tell you how many mushrooms are actually in the pack?

Lcb123 · 23/06/2023 08:07

hilarious someone is genuinely concerned by this. Take your own bag

LubaLuca · 23/06/2023 08:12

No. You're incredibly naive to think these corporations run for profit are not going to use every opportunity to advertise their brand - why would they consider your wishes when all they're obliged to do is sell carrier bags at a certain price to those that ask for one?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 23/06/2023 08:18

@BarbaraofSeville I wasn't talking about the morals of charging for one.

I was saying that legally they don't need to charge for paper bags. That's a business decision.

BlackberrySky · 23/06/2023 08:21

I don't understand why people who shop in a particular shop get curmudgeonly about "giving them free advertising". You shop there, don't you want them to remain in business so you can continue to shop there? Cutting one's nose off and all that...

GulesMeansRed · 23/06/2023 08:21

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts in Scotland they charge. OP doesn't say "In England..."

Surroundedbyfools · 23/06/2023 08:26

Can’t really bring myself to care tbh.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 23/06/2023 08:28

Does the 'free advertising' work?

I've never found myself clocking someone's Morrison's paper bag as they swing it along the high street and thought, 'Well, that looks like a fantastic idea! I'm going to get myself down to Morries and go effing bananas and blow all my wages'.

ButImNotOldEnough · 23/06/2023 08:39

Not quite related, but I quite like my sports direct reusable bag. It’s yellow and has pictures of bees on it, it also came with a wee thing that had wildflower seeds bees love that you could plant on the card attached to the handle. Plus they have a grip handle so it doesn’t cut into your hands too which is why I use it for all of my shopping now!

Prescottdanni123 · 23/06/2023 08:42

The logo doesn't bother me. The price of paper bags sometimes does. I was in a local food court a little while ago and politely queried the total amount when it came to more than I thought it would. I didn't know how much the bag I had asked for cost at the time. The cashier went on a massive, patronising lecture about how while the paper bags cost more than plastic ones, they are trying to save the planet. I stood there quietly until she had finished and then named at least three other shops in town that used compostable plastic bags for 20% of the price of her paper one.

theswoot · 23/06/2023 08:46

this is a truly brilliant mumsnet problem

cuckyplunt · 23/06/2023 07:53

ABSOLUTELY!
This is absolutely the hill I will die on!

WHO’S WITH ME?

I’m with you!! Let’s take it right to the top (of the hill)!!!

power to the people, except those who wear clothes with branding on them, they’re not allowed on the hill 😂

MrsMikeDrop · 23/06/2023 08:49

Never thought about it, but yes I agree if you're paying for it

I bought 3 drinks in boots and asked(paid) for a bag. I didn't think it was man enough to hold 3 drinks bottles and planned to put one in my own bag. Before I had a chance to do that, the assistant put all 3 in the bag, I took it and it broke before I'd even left the shop (the exit was about 5m away!) 😂

cuckyplunt · 23/06/2023 07:55

Just be a dickhead and ostentatiously turn the bag inside out, in the shop, before you use it. If you can hold up a queue all the better!
That’ll larn’em!

That will probably rip the bag as they are generally a bit rubbish. Then you'll have the shame of purchasing another bag?!

starfishmummy · 23/06/2023 09:04

If companies want me to do their advertising for them they need to pay me. For that reason I always take my own fabric bags with me.

I'm old. I remember the time before free carrier bags. Like now most people had shopping bags and carriers had to be paid for. A lot of people felt like you do and if we bought a carrier would turn it inside out to hide the name of the shop.

Mademetoxic · 23/06/2023 09:06

The whole point is to bring your own bags.

Thought you would have known this from 2015.

OdeToBarney · 23/06/2023 09:16

BoohooWoohoo · 23/06/2023 07:42

Aren't paper bags free in England Eg Primark ?

Matalan charges for paper bags.

Lacucuracha · 23/06/2023 09:17

You are choosing to buy the bag, they aren’t forcing you, so yes, they can use their branding.

By your logic you would force GAP to remove their logo from their t-shirts just because they’re charging you for it.

I won't shop there purely for that reason, not that anyone cares Grin

Ha, I don’t shop there either!

melj1213 · 23/06/2023 09:31

YABU - if you don't want to pay for a bag advertising the company that you are shopping with, bring your own bag.

Just because a company doesn't legally have to charge you for something doesn't mean they won't, they're a business not a charity at the end of the day.

I work in a supermarket, we currently have no plastic bags for life as our order didn't arrive from the warehouse ... The absolute entitlement of some people is astounding when we apologise and tell them that the only bags we have available are the 70p heavy duty ones as opposed to the 30p plastic ones! We don't have to provide carrier bags at all, the company does so because they obviously want to make people want to shop with us so make sure there are ways for them to get said shopping home.

We've been trying to reduce plastic use for years, we should all be defaulting to using reusables and only buying new bags as a one off (eg you need 4 bags but only brought 3 with you) but there are regular customers who come in, some on a daily basis, and get a few items and a bag every single time and complain about having to pay 30p for the bag every single time - Every day I want to respond "Then bring the bag you bought yesterday back with you and you won't have to pay again, FFS!" but I don't as they'd only complain about me and I CBA with the hassle.

SeaSaltAir · 23/06/2023 09:35

Why are you buying paper bags each time you shop OP? Do you hate the environment and want us all to die?

Riapia · 23/06/2023 09:48

MN Consensus is that the big retailers had a right to wring every last penny out of you.
