MIL turned all my washing inside out!

JanS17 · 22/06/2023 06:53

We are on holiday at the moment with DH’s family (me, DH, DD, MIL, SIL, BIL, and dog).

Yesterday I did a load of washing (mix of mine, DH, and DD) and before we went out for lunch, I hung it all up nicely on the clothes rack and put it out in the sun to dry.

When we got back from lunch, MIL said she had moved a few things around to help them dry faster. I was a bit confused as the clothes were hung up as I wanted them to begin with but shrugged and said ok.

Yesterday evening I brought the rack of clothes inside and found that she has turned every single item of clothing (except socks - thank goodness!!) inside out!!

I am equally confused and pissed off. Why would she see my nicely hung out washing, and think to herself that it’s a good idea to remove every single piece of clothing, turn it inside out, and put it back?? Why was she even touching my washing in the first place???

The clothes are now all creased where she’s hung them crooked, and I have an extra chore of turning them all back the right way round again.

AIBU??

YABU - she was just trying to help (??)
YANBU - what was she thinking??

If this is all you have to bug you, your life is a doddle! Get over yourself it’s a bit of washing, poor MIL.

Sounds like you’re all just getting on each others tits in close quarters.

Id shrug it off and move on.

Probably a vey accurate answer!

Noodles1234 · 23/06/2023 20:58

I always wash and hang everything out inside out - it slows down colour fade - she’s doing you a favour!

Middleagedspreadisreal · 23/06/2023 21:09

Yawn

FlipFlop1987 · 23/06/2023 22:17

I don’t get on with my MIL and she once hung my washing out whilst babysitting for an hour. Honestly what a shambles, I see why her son can’t hang washing. Putting things out with massive gaps then running out of space, hanging tops with peg mark right in the middle. Things were stretched. However, as much as I can’t bear the woman, she thought she was helping in her own way and it could have been left all day in the washing machine instead and probably start stinking. So in the grand scheme of things, really it’s not much of an issue is it. This probably goes deeper than just washing I think. Pick your battles!

nutbrownhare15 · 23/06/2023 22:33

Rejigging my entire wash routine thanks to this thread

Ineke · 24/06/2023 01:50

She was trying to help, maybe she just wants to feel useful. Perhaps ask her why she turned your clothes inside out,(sun) and even though it was annoying for you, show her some gratitude but kindly let her know that she need not do it again for you.

Rottweilermummy · 24/06/2023 05:04

Wow I never knew this about drying clothes inside out.😲 Shame your MIL didn't explain if that was what she was doing it for. Fact she re hung all crooked is annoying and I'm guessing it's fact she messed with your clothes anyway I prob would be annoyed too. hope it doesn't upset the dynamic of the holiday her interfering . It's helped me though anyway lol . 🤣

McLennonK · 24/06/2023 06:59

I hang my washing out in whatever way it comes out of the machine, but when it's nearly dry I go out and turn it all the other way so that it's definitely properly dry - pockets, hoods, linings, waistbands etc can stay damp otherwise. I don't think she's unreasonable at all!
At least half of my washing comes off the line inside out so I don't really see the issue.
YABU.

She was staying to help.

I'm surprised you didn't know that you should always hand washing inside out in the sun as it's prevents bleaching and the faded line where it's hung over.

And then anything that needs ironing is already inside out for that.

She's done you a favour teaching you the right way Grin

Wow I did not know that. I bet it's better for your clothes too washing them inside out

Nannyfannybanny · 24/06/2023 07:24

I haven't back read all 14 pages, but yes, stops fading, and dries items with thick inner pockets etc quickly.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/06/2023 08:42

Never even think about hanging inside out due to sun

But I have rearranged /shaken out sometimes when dh has hung as then creased

pilates · 24/06/2023 09:22

You want to see how my DH hangs out washing; one peg to three pairs of knickers. I don’t say anything, just rearrange. 😬

Sennelier1 · 24/06/2023 09:52

I suppose your MIL did this, for a good reason, but she should have asked you first.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 24/06/2023 10:06

Being really pedantic here. I’ve got my flameproof suit on so here goes…bottoms get hung from top and tops get hung from the bottom. I don’t colour code the pegs though, I’m not that pedantic.

Heyhoitsme · 24/06/2023 10:07

I once hung red trousers on the line in the sun. They turned salmon pink!

Vynalbob · 24/06/2023 16:04

She was being helpful (even if annoying). Creased due to being left out too long not from being inside out which actually not only helps prevent fading but if done b4 tumble drying can cut down on ironing (as long as they're not in too long).
If it bugs you that much give her a gentle hint (or she'll think you a bit ungrateful).

Smittenkitchen · 24/06/2023 17:20

My DH doesn't shake things out and hangs things wonkily (see also: shelves) 🙈

1mabon · 26/06/2023 16:41

Well, if that's all you have to grumble about, you are very fortunate. Get over it woman.
I turn many garments inside out when the sun is hot as it can bleach coloured items.

Did OP say that this the only thing she has to worry about? I very much suspect it is not the case. She is coming onto MN to have a moan.

If one of your mates said "oh, I was so annoyed when I went to Tesco and they had no strawberries left" would you tell them to get over it because it's not a big enough worry (in your book)? Do you ever have a bit of a moan about something quite trivial?

1mabon · 26/06/2023 17:08

Rarely, as we have had much adversity in our lives, one gets things in perspective as to what is important.

Very profound.

Yeah if you came on to moan about strawberry availability on Tesco I would definitely be telling you to get over it! I think my friends know me well enough to know I wouldn’t be interested in their shopping issues.

🤣

Fair enough, but I think you understand my point.

I don't know why someone would spend time on the MN talk boards, or certainly the threads that are clearly someone just having a vent, if their only contribution is "you're lucky that's all you've got to worry about".

As long as your basic needs are met (food, shelter, clothing) then everything's rosie and anyone wanting more needs to take a look at themselves.
