MIL turned all my washing inside out!

We are on holiday at the moment with DH’s family (me, DH, DD, MIL, SIL, BIL, and dog).

Yesterday I did a load of washing (mix of mine, DH, and DD) and before we went out for lunch, I hung it all up nicely on the clothes rack and put it out in the sun to dry.

When we got back from lunch, MIL said she had moved a few things around to help them dry faster. I was a bit confused as the clothes were hung up as I wanted them to begin with but shrugged and said ok.

Yesterday evening I brought the rack of clothes inside and found that she has turned every single item of clothing (except socks - thank goodness!!) inside out!!

I am equally confused and pissed off. Why would she see my nicely hung out washing, and think to herself that it’s a good idea to remove every single piece of clothing, turn it inside out, and put it back?? Why was she even touching my washing in the first place???

The clothes are now all creased where she’s hung them crooked, and I have an extra chore of turning them all back the right way round again.

AIBU??

YABU - she was just trying to help (??)
YANBU - what was she thinking??

I'm really surprised at how fast the sun bleaches stuff- particularly reds.
Sheets hung on a washing line in the sun and wind really do seem to whiten.
They certainly smell lovely after a blow in the sun.
Linens used to be dried on lawns centuries ago to whiten them.

I use washable sanitary towels and the sun is great for getting out the stubborn stains from the browner blood. I sometimes splash them with lemon juice first.

I turn everything inside out to prevent colour fade so she would've thought to protect fading/ bleaching from the sun
Sensible really

Blimey, in the college? Its just a common sense and common knowledge for many.

Had to research different water temps on different fabrics, iron temperatures, shrinkage % to calculate how much fabric needed, important when mass production is involved.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/06/2023 15:41

I always wash/dry/iron inside out! When DP and I first moved in together I was surprised he didn't.

Mollymalone123 · 22/06/2023 15:52

I once used just sunlight to get rid of lily pollen stain in a white shirt and it worked!

OMGitsnotgood · 22/06/2023 15:59

When it's sunny, especially abroad when the sun is hot for a lot of the day, i dry things inside out, ever since my very favourite and relatively new but no longer in the shops top was ruined by a bleach line where it had been hung over the drying rack. Pre Vinted unfortunately!

I really hope this story makes it to the Daily Mail!!!

I discovered an old very yellowed pillow case in a drawer. I hung it outside to dry, very deliberately in full sun. It’s gone back to bright white! Your mil did you a favour.

It was washing it in powder that cleaned it.

Nope, still yellow coming out of the machine. I left it 2 days because it was still a bit yellow after a day.

YBU - she was probably just trying to get it to dry faster and prevent fading. Yes it’s a bit inconvenient but she was trying to do a good deed in helping you. I would just ask her why, in a nice way, like, just curious why you turned my nearly placed clothes outside in because it’s not something I’ve ever done and it was weird having to put it all back. She’ll get the hint in a nice way that you found it inconvenient and probably won’t ever help you with it again.

ARRGHHHHHxxxxx · 22/06/2023 20:51

YANBU

This would annoy me too, trying to be helpful without asking is rude.

I understand your frustration OP.

MerryHen · 22/06/2023 20:54

I've wondered why my neighbours hang their washing inside out and now I know!

Sunlight is great for bleaching cloth nappies, so it makes sense it'd fade clothes.

ClairDeLaLune · 22/06/2023 21:00

I wash all my stuff inside out. I’ve had jeans end up with white lines on them when I haven’t. If I dry inside I turn them the right way, outside in the sun I leave them inside out. The sun bleaches. Your MIL was helping. Poor woman, give her a break.

This is exactly what I did, asked her in a nice way why she’d done it, and the answer is that she did it to get them to dry faster. Nothing about sun bleaching the clothes after all!

She was trying to be kind. That's what some people will do for others.

Well, unexpected benefits. Let her know about the bleaching and then you can still come out as the superior laundrywoman.

Yerroblemom1923 · 22/06/2023 06:57

Just iron them. It'll be fine.

I haven’t RTFT, but - who in the world irons clothes while on holidays?! I can rarely be bothered with it at home. I just can’t wrap my head around doing a bunch of ironing while on hols.

So she was trying to be nice?

CheshireCat1 · 22/06/2023 23:18

I turn mine inside out too, always have done.

CM1897 · 22/06/2023 23:25

Just put them in the wardrobe or drawers the way they are. Why the need to turn them back? I’m sure whoever is wearing the item of clothing can spend ten seconds turning it outside in (is that the opposite of inside out)?

it would be inside in :D

😂 thank you. It’s not something I’ve ever really thought about before, so when I was writing the comment I had no idea what to call it lol.

I think life is too short to be turning everything inside in

Daisybuttercup12345 · 22/06/2023 23:52

Surely you should know clothes are turned inside out to prevent fading?

PrincessFiorimonde · 23/06/2023 00:09

I always hang my washing inside out to prevent fading, as pp have suggested.

However, I would not dream of interfering with anyone else's washing/drying! That's just weird. Even if your MIL (who I hope may normally be a lovely person?) had good intentions, she should have restrained herself.
