At what age do kids stop talking and start grunting?

Cos I'm on count down.

I love my child. I do. But I picked him up at 12, we got hoek at 5.30 and o swear he's barely stopped talking at me all that time. Primarily just about one game on my phone (as in "who's your favourite... , imagine if they were real and...., how many times bigger do you think x would be in real life....., when they made the game they did....." so not actually playing on it apart from a short period. He stopped talking for two medical tests. He talked to the Dr and a semi-stranger at the bus stop but obv I was in those conversations. My brain rarely shuts up as it is so it's been running it's own dialogue on top of DS's constant stream of consciousness.

AIBU to be on countdown for teenage grunts? He's just turned 8.

Age 13 for us.

Happy, chatty, energetic child at age 12.

Surly, grunting, lethargic at age 13.

We have adhd and asd in the mix too which is probably making things harder but I really am not enjoying these teenage years.

Enjoy and cherish your 8 year old.

Full Kevin and Perry transformation for mine at age 11, but I am relieved to say he has just turned 14 and (mostly) far better company now - except when he’s hungry 😂

britespark1 · 21/06/2023 18:30

11 and 12 for mine!

SleepingStandingUp · 21/06/2023 18:36

I appreciate I should appreciate him talking to me but I've had 5.5 hours of Singing Monster chat. Brief interlude to tell Cardiologist the Mario painting is the wrong colour. With constant tapping of me if my attention wanders, or am trying to talk to an adult, leading to desperate hands up to ask me a question about a hypothetical costume I'd pick.

I love him. I'm just full today of sound. And he was a late talker, so I absolutely appreciate the fact he CAN talk for 5 hours and I can largely understand most of it. I cherish his speech. I'm just too full of words now.

It depends I have 4 ds, tends to happen between 11-13 they still all had their moments of incessant talking about random crap though

SleepingStandingUp · 21/06/2023 18:38

I've got twins behind him too so just as he's going grunty and quiet they'll be at full flow

Usually about 11. They all differ. Sometimes 12/13. One DC remained chatty always, just grew m his hair very very long, no problem. Mostly improve by 17/18.

BOM. BO-BOM. BOMMMM! BO-O-OM!

My son is also 8 and I am also suffering from Singing Monsters. He is currently obsessed with getting Rare Shrub.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 21/06/2023 18:52

Ha ha, I was going to reference Kevin and Perry too @ProudThrilledHappy 🤣, I think mine used it as a guide!

Omg if only by some random fluke we lived nearby we could meet up and leave them together for hours whilst we sit in silence 😂😂. Today we realised you can record sound for ALL the monsters we have and he couldn't understand why I noisy bus was NOT the place. He spends half his time in the singing one where you make your own music and I'M the one stuck breeding eggs and baking food 😭😭😭

15yo does a fair amount of grunting. He's always been a man of few words though! 13yo not grunting yet. 9yo never stops talking.

ProudThrilledHappy · 21/06/2023 19:07

@Newyeardietstartstomorrow I actually showed DS that clip once and he just grunted “Not funny” at me!

KevinDeBrioche · 21/06/2023 19:08

Around 12 here. I miss my sweet boy 😥

SleepingStandingUp · 21/06/2023 19:08

He momentarily quiet. But only because he has Story Bots on Netflix. I don't even care if it's not age appropriate. He's quiet 🤣🤣

I'M the one stuck breeding eggs and baking food 😭😭😭

Don't do it! I'm still stuck growing and harvesting crops and feeding DS's Dragon City dragons. It's like having pets but I suppose the monsters and dragons don't need pet insurance.

Kerantli · 21/06/2023 19:16

13 for Eldest (almost 16 now), still waiting for Youngest (14).

He wittered on about Among Us for 3 hours the other weekend, I wanted to claw my ears off while smiling and nodding along😩

We've just got the fire island tho and I want the sunflower monster.... 😂 He even found a shop that sold the plushies so now we have a toe monster toy.

2 teens, 1 preteen (2 DS, 1 DD)

I've never had the grunting, thus far. All of mine want to talk a lot about stuff they care about.

However, the listening / engaging on stuff I might want to cover - school work, chores, personal hygiene? Dead-eyed stares & deep sighs.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/06/2023 21:55

Ugh. He's just needed a sleepover that also required being basically wrapped around me. I just need to be less amazing and awesome to be with 😂😂😂

I have three my second was really shocked at how grunty the oldest was aged about 14 and promised that they would never be like that rinse and repeat for the youngest as well…it does get better !!

chellogo · 21/06/2023 22:14

My son started with the grunting around 10 - still going strong at 14. My 11 DD never stops talking but much preferable to the grunting

FabFitFifties · 21/06/2023 22:18

12 for my ds - he mumbles everything and doesn't seem to move his jaw anymore, unless eating. I thought I was losing my hearing at first.

Grumpypupster · 21/06/2023 22:24

14.... We see him when we force him to come out of his pit for food. And after his evening bath he will move to the lounge where he sits not talking to us boring parents. Any questions are met with "ok", "don't know"

Though he does chat with 11yr old sister, showing her how to do games and code and design stuff and whatever else.

DD doesn't stop talking.... Random stuff... Her grandma asked if she ever shuts up. I do sorta miss 11yr old Ds telling me random facts about monster trucks and random Guinness world records.
