AIBU to think student DS spending £50 on his nights out is ridiculous?

Maybe my age but I used to go out with £5 - into a club for free, couple of halves of lager, 10 fags. Admittedly a good few years ago!

DS (2nd year of uni SE England) says he cannot go out with less than £50 for drinks in the pub, then admission and drinks in a club. And possibly an Uber home after.

He does have a job but is saving that money for when he goes back to uni.

AIBU to think this is not a typical amount that uni students / teens spend on a night out?

YABU - £50 is a normal amount and you have no idea of the true cost of a night out

YANBU - he's a student with limited income and should therefore limit nights out / spending

I was referring to this post ^^

We had a riot. It was all a blast.

YouJustDoYou · 22/06/2023 20:27

That's cheap. And I used to go out 20 years or so ago and that's what it cost then, taxi fare/train fare included.

Veryxonfused · 22/06/2023 20:34

That’s normal tbh - few drinks, transport & takeaway at the end of the night

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 22/06/2023 20:34

Jesus OP. Are you still thawing out? 😅 £5 can't even get you a coffee these days.

Macinae · 22/06/2023 20:40

I could spend £40 on a night out as a student 13 years ago so by today's standards £50 is cheap.

Cas112 · 22/06/2023 20:43

YABU Times change you know

60p drinks? Where - 2002?

Nope, now! I promise there are lots of places like this.

This thread was on my mind as I was walking through town earlier.... walkabout had some very cheap deals and weatherspoons pints where under 3 quid.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 22/06/2023 20:49

depends to a degree on location, I think in the northeast on a free club entry night £50 is doable, in London not a chance. I bought a round of vodka shots the other night imagining they would be £2 each, £6! 😂 it was 50p when I was a student…

Even the place you specifically mentioned (Corp in Sheffield) doesn’t have 60p drinks.

Even on their ‘Skint Wednesday’ nights, it 90p for sours. ‘Proper’ drinks start at £1.20.

Of course, those prices are still staggeringly cheap, and I doubt you could find similar in the SE.

He could reduce the amount if he gets pre-drunk before going out.-👻 We used to meet up in someone's place for drinks before heading out lol

horseyhorsey17 · 22/06/2023 21:09

My parents did this to me in 90s - claimed that going out was an extravagance they shouldn’t have to pay for. I got a grant but no money off my (middle class, both in professional jobs) parents and ended up having to get a part time job to fund my way through uni. I’d also been kicked out of home so ended up working so many hours I fucked up on my course. My mum claimed she wore the same outfit all the way through uni. Turned out to be a massive lie - she actually had a car at uni, and that was the 60s. Anywayyyyy clearly my parents were tight as duck’s arses and also not the best at patenting but the reality is that a night out in SE does cost a minimum of £50. So there it is.

Yeah, forgot about that. We used to do that too!

jojo2202 · 22/06/2023 21:45

i think you are living in a dream world. i used to go out with £15 in early 00's. A pack of cigs cost nearly that much now. Drinks are a fiver each.

keffie12 · 22/06/2023 22:02

£50 is a cheap on a night out now. Taxi's, drinks, nightclub entry, and something to eat is nothing by today prices.

Elvis1956 · 22/06/2023 22:28

Christ I'd spend that in 1990. This year went to a reunion of my 6th form at a working mans club and spent £120

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/06/2023 23:29

It's not the early 00s anymore.
When I started uni, 20 years ago this September, you used to get £1 pints, free shots or prosecco and walk home getting chips for £1 on your way (in the north). I could easily go out on £15.
Times have changed. Everything is so much more expensive now! I think he's doing well to have a night out on £50.

Kaylagiampaolo87 · 23/06/2023 01:53

First off that is cheap for a night out you are showing your age. Secondly, he has a job and is also putting away money for university what's the issue with him spending a night out with his friends? Is he saving spending money or tuition money or what? I assume he's over 18 and an adult? Why are you trying to budget his money for him?

Desperatetime · 23/06/2023 06:12

Sounds normal and his choice he has a job after all

Netty89 · 23/06/2023 06:49
  1. £50 is not that much for a night out.
  2. He has a job so it is his money.
  3. Unless he's asking you for the money as he wants to keep his earnings for savings, then it is really none of your business. He is a grown adult.
Vynalbob · 23/06/2023 07:40

Might be reasonable cost for a night out. But how often matters more for a student.....other forms of cheaper entertainment are possible. If too often then it comes out of savings surely.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 23/06/2023 07:44

RemoteDesktop · 22/06/2023 20:12

He could walk to the pub, have tap water, then just walk home and have a bit of a dance in his room.

If he has to drink, lots of people leave unfinished drinks on their tables, so he could just polish those off.

If he’s hungry, he could get one of those Mumsnet chickens - should be able to get 5 meals out of that if he freezes the leftovers and saves them for his next big night out.

Simply brilliant Smile

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 23/06/2023 07:46

I reckon I could still get pretty pissed on £50 and have got a meal out too. Clearly I'm a lightweight.

Missjd87 · 23/06/2023 11:48

Where is DC going out for only £50 a night! I wanna go!

seriously though speaking as an ex hospital it’s manager. That’s a perfectly normal amount to spend.

3WildOnes · 23/06/2023 12:59

Lilly0909 · 22/06/2023 19:57

Pints are £5-6
Club entry £10
Uber home £20
Clearly only having a few drinks. Seems reasonable, why don't you offer to pick him up if you're worried about his spending

As a student you wouldn't be getting an Uber home alone though. So the cost per person would likely be £5. We used to get taxis all the time as students but it would be shared by 4 of us.
