AIBU to think student DS spending £50 on his nights out is ridiculous?

Maybe my age but I used to go out with £5 - into a club for free, couple of halves of lager, 10 fags. Admittedly a good few years ago!

DS (2nd year of uni SE England) says he cannot go out with less than £50 for drinks in the pub, then admission and drinks in a club. And possibly an Uber home after.

He does have a job but is saving that money for when he goes back to uni.

AIBU to think this is not a typical amount that uni students / teens spend on a night out?

YABU - £50 is a normal amount and you have no idea of the true cost of a night out

YANBU - he's a student with limited income and should therefore limit nights out / spending

Quite a cheap night out if it includes taxi home ! X

Ilovecleaning · 22/06/2023 19:11

You are behind the times I’m afraid! 😊.

Mummystevo · 22/06/2023 19:15

Id cry if i paid that much for a pint, there between £2.50-£4 where i live 😂

onlywayissussex · 22/06/2023 19:17

How OLD are you?

When is the last time you had an evening out?

I went to uni in the 90s and definitely needed more than a fiver for a night out

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/06/2023 19:18

I used to go out on £7 when in 1983. I put it into an inflation calculator and it came out at £22.

Quid in, taxi home, and 2 halves of cider. Just drank water when we couldn’t afford cider.

Remember going to the Batcave with a friend. We shared one drink between us all evening.

Bignanny30 · 22/06/2023 19:18

Unfortunately £50 is not a lot for a night out these days

You need to put it in a retail price index calculator. You would be surprised. You couldn't get that for £22 now.

onlywayissussex · 22/06/2023 19:19

Even if you went to uni 25/30 years ago, surely you still have a social life now?

Do you ever go to pubs, restaurants? Not ever?

No, l spent nothing because l had nothing. I could have spent loads more, but something had to give so we’d share a drink and then have pints of water.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/06/2023 19:24

Retail price indicator. Thirty quid.

OP if you have a child at uni I assuming you were at uni at least 25 years ago? Prices have gone up a bit since then!!

I’m 45, so was in my peak clubbing days 20+ years ago and it could cost me a good £40 for a night out then!

RemoteDesktop · 22/06/2023 19:49

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/06/2023 19:24

And that’s for no food and stretching one pint out across the whole night.

Is it possible to have a night out for less than £50? Sure. Is £50 extravagant, no, not even by student standards.

Lilly0909 · 22/06/2023 19:57

Pints are £5-6
Club entry £10
Uber home £20
Clearly only having a few drinks. Seems reasonable, why don't you offer to pick him up if you're worried about his spending

Scunnered123 · 22/06/2023 19:59

Don't know for sure. How much is a pint in the student union these days? We used to get a late night bus home, couldn't afford a taxi.

Entry into a club on a student night is what, £10? Then two half-ciders @ £3 each and a (shared) taxi home for ~£5.

There’s your £22.

It doesn’t cost much more to go out now than it did 40 years ago, adjusted for inflation.

That sounds like a thoroughly depressing night out.

firsttimemum1230 · 22/06/2023 20:08

In this day and age you’re not spending just a tenner never mind a fiver. 10 years ago I’d be spending £50/60 some nights and £20
otjefs it does depend but he is just living his life and enjoying it you can’t knock him
for that.

I don’t disagree.

It was in response to a poster who claimed that you could not get the above for £22 in today’s money when you clearly can.

Some people can’t get their head around inflation, it seems.

Are you serious? 😂

What kind of students do you know?!

For god’s sake, I was responding to a previous post!

Someone said they got entry into a club, 2 halves of cider and a taxi home for £7 in 1983, or £22 in today’s money. I’m saying you can still get the same thing for the same amount today, adjusted for inflation.

He could walk to the pub, have tap water, then just walk home and have a bit of a dance in his room.

If he has to drink, lots of people leave unfinished drinks on their tables, so he could just polish those off.

If he’s hungry, he could get one of those Mumsnet chickens - should be able to get 5 meals out of that if he freezes the leftovers and saves them for his next big night out.

Sunsetmom · 22/06/2023 20:14

£100 minimum on a night out these days, taxi home is usually £20! £50 is a cheap night for sure! Leave him alone and let him spend his money how he wishes! At least he’s working to earn it!!

Wenfy · 22/06/2023 20:16

£50 for a night out is fine provided he doesn’t do it too often. Kids these days don’t go out everyday like people did in the days before tuition fees did. Many prefer drugs to alcohol so if it’s just once a week then it’s fine provided he can afford it.

Sillyname63 · 22/06/2023 20:23

I am probably 20+ plus years older that you and even I would say £50 on a night out to a club and e very low, admission £10 , drinks even in spoons are £5+ plus a pint they tend to drink shots of bottle beer as it easier to carry around so it doesn't get spiked and a taxi for a 2 mile journey where I live is £8. In the day time probably near £10 in the night.
