AIBU to think student DS spending £50 on his nights out is ridiculous?

Maybe my age but I used to go out with £5 - into a club for free, couple of halves of lager, 10 fags. Admittedly a good few years ago!

DS (2nd year of uni SE England) says he cannot go out with less than £50 for drinks in the pub, then admission and drinks in a club. And possibly an Uber home after.

He does have a job but is saving that money for when he goes back to uni.

AIBU to think this is not a typical amount that uni students / teens spend on a night out?

YABU - £50 is a normal amount and you have no idea of the true cost of a night out

YANBU - he's a student with limited income and should therefore limit nights out / spending

I'd have spent around £40 on nights out in 00s that didn't always include a taxi home because we were able to walk and no admission costs. I didn't drink much and didn't smoke. Things are much dearer now so the budget you're working off isn't realistic. However to spend £50 on a night out is only ok if its not happening regularly otherwise its going to tally up really quickly so he needs to find a way to budget his nights out. Perhaps going to a more local pub for a few than going into town to clubs etc and being mindful of what he's drinking. Eg nursing a beer rather than shots etc and planning his way home so he doesn't need an uber (prices get expensive in the wee hours when taxis are scarce) and sharing it with someone. House parties are also good if he's able to manage his friends and do the clean up after or even better do it in someone else's house!

My son isn't in uni and works full time but on a typical night out, spends in the region of £200 - £250 🥴

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 21/06/2023 18:33

Isn’t the problem more where is the money coming from if his job money is being saved for uni?

OwlBabiesAreCute · 21/06/2023 18:43

Thanks everyone, am reading all the responses. Also made DS feel better that the vast majority think I am BU!

as others have said, both applies. I knew friends who would easily spend £50 or way more on a night out when I was in uni, 15 years ago. drinks are expensive now!

But equally I also had loads of nights out where I didn't spend a penny - got rat arsed at pre-drinks, went to the uni club nights which were free entry, was so drunk didn't need to drink any more, then walked home.

Drinking at a pub and getting an uber every time he goes out, if he's within walking distance and with mates (so not walking alone), is a bit of a luxury for a student. Although it might be hard if that's the pattern amongst his mates. Also how often does he go out? We used to go out a few times a week, so spending £10-15 each time is equivalent to him having one 'big' £50 night out a week,

So £50 is a reasonable price for the things he does, but it's his choice to do those things and he could choose cheaper alternatives, if that makes sense.

YABU

Most of that would be taken for a taxi and getting into the club.

But you should not be paying.

If he can’t afford it, he either doesn’t go out or he gets a job.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/06/2023 19:11

I've not been out much in the past decade, so the price of a couple of drinks always makes me baulk as I don't keep up with the increase in costs. Long gone are the days of £1 to get in, £1 on 4 more drinks and rolling back into halls merrily drunk on a fiver. Or a night out clubbing on £15.

TBH, I spend more time baulking at the checkout in Aldi these days.

If he can fund such nights out, then let him enjoy his youth before the reality of family food shops or hangovers after 2 pints hits.

changeyerheadworzel · 21/06/2023 19:21

he's doing really well if he is only spending £50 ..honestly.

Sophie89j · 21/06/2023 20:01

Depending if needing a taxi too then £50 is quite cheap I’d say. Taking into account it’s roughly £5 a pint these days, where we live in a small town in Wales with a minimum of £5 usually for club entry then drinks once inside is much higher.

Dontworkmondays · 21/06/2023 20:26

In 2000 ish would cost me about £20 including taxis and food on way home. I think £50 is reasonable.

Elaina87 · 21/06/2023 21:00

Err I'd say £50 absolute minimum yes! Drinks taxis, club entries... £50 is easily spent.

Libra24 · 21/06/2023 21:23

£50 isn't a lot for a full night out

He should be budgeting to his means.

Agree with whoever said the poll doesn't work as both can be true.

We all have to cut our cloth accordingly. He can't save money and spend money (or is this an issue cause he's trying to spend yours?)

magratvonlipwig · 21/06/2023 22:06

I would spend £50 on a night out in the early 2000s, cant imagine its got any cheaper.

Serena73 · 21/06/2023 22:20

You can't really compare with the 'old' days - have you seen the price of drinks now?! Particularly in a club and in the SE.

LGB87 · 21/06/2023 22:22

Went out this week, got a round for 4 of us.. 3 cocktails and 1 small bottle of beer and it came to £39..

YABU 😅

Batalax · 21/06/2023 22:27

I dread to think what my student ds spends but judging by the size of his overdraft - a lot.

DelphiniumBlue · 21/06/2023 22:30

Clubbing is expensive, taxis are expensive, always have been. I think the difference is that years ago students didn't expect to be able to go clubbing regularly, or to get taxis.
It's his choice if he's paying for it. I hope he's not expecting you to fund his drinking.

19lottie82 · 21/06/2023 22:32

Gosh, I spent this 15-20 years ago!

Notquitethere60 · 21/06/2023 22:33

Not what you want to hear but inflation is a thing! I used to pay £7 a week rent at Uni. And I’m not a pensioner!
Can’t remember the cost of drinks but everything has shot up especially hospitality.

Gh12345 · 21/06/2023 22:34

I went out a month ago and didn’t even go to a club and spent £60. Used to spend £20-£30 at most 10 years ago. Everything has doubled.

Mindovermatter247 · 21/06/2023 22:37

I work with a lot of uni students and from what I’ve heard a fair amount of them are spending near 70-100 on a night out… im from south east

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 22:38

Not unreasonable for spending. Not really sure why it's your business.

ilovepixie · 21/06/2023 22:46

I wish I could have a night out on 50 quid!

19lottie82 · 21/06/2023 22:48

Taking cabs and spending all night buying expensive drinks in bars

on fifty quid??? I wish!

ChocChipHandbag · 21/06/2023 23:03

I’m guessing your degree wasn’t in economics!
