AIBU to think student DS spending £50 on his nights out is ridiculous?

Maybe my age but I used to go out with £5 - into a club for free, couple of halves of lager, 10 fags. Admittedly a good few years ago!

DS (2nd year of uni SE England) says he cannot go out with less than £50 for drinks in the pub, then admission and drinks in a club. And possibly an Uber home after.

He does have a job but is saving that money for when he goes back to uni.

AIBU to think this is not a typical amount that uni students / teens spend on a night out?

YABU - £50 is a normal amount and you have no idea of the true cost of a night out

YANBU - he's a student with limited income and should therefore limit nights out / spending

I'm one of the 7% who thinks it is ridiculous.

Then you read of what people are prepared to spend on hen/stag dos, baby showers, 'big birthdays' and no doubt other examples, and it is just another example of the upscaling of events to spend more money. So the spend described is typical.

And if you criticise it no doubt someone will refer to it being 'essential' because of all we have had to endure with the impact of Covid and the last 13 years of Tory misrule.

It's about priorities and preferences though isn't it?

If you can afford it and enjoy then what's the problem?

Comefromaway · 21/06/2023 10:52

I can still go out and only spend about £20. (more if I'm having a meal).

caringcarer · 21/06/2023 10:54

My dd told me years ago when she was at Uni girls were allowed to enter clubs for free, if before a certain time, but boys always had to pay to go in. Not sure if that still holds. Either way £50 in SE including Uber home is a cheap night out.

Comefromaway · 21/06/2023 10:54

*It's about priorities and preferences though isn't it?

The point is that students can't afford it. The OP says her son has a job but is wanting to save that rather than spend it on a night out. The implication is that he's moaning he doesn't have enough money, is he asking OP to subsidise him?

Do people routinely get taxis home as students? I could never afford one so I walked!

It cheap for a night out if you have the money to spend the night in a pub and get a taxi and are having one of those nights out. But when I was a student, barely anyone was taking taxis home, sometimes the night bus but mainly walking, we didn't go out at 7pm and spend three hours in the pub, we drank in our flats and then headed out about 10 to save money. That's just kind of student life isn't it? Or is it all Ubers and bars now?

Just look what happened to students walking home just last week. It's far safer to Uber home.

caringcarer · 21/06/2023 10:57

OP you can't get 1 drink for £5 now.

minipie · 21/06/2023 10:57

It depends on whether the DS is expecting to be given money by his parents to fund his social life (or anything else).

It’s not clear from the OP whether he is asking for money. I presume he is, given she says “he does have a job but is saving that money for when he’s back at uni”. I read that as meaning he’s asking her for money for going out in the holidays.

Anyway if he’s not asking for any money and is funding his life from his own earnings and student loan then it’s entirely up to him.

If he’s asking OP for money then in her shoes I would be telling him to rein in his spending.

I was replying directly to the poster I quoted so not specifically referring to students.

Oh FGS, if we're going to play that game, then it's very likely that more students have been injured or worse when travelling in a taxi than the two who died in last week's tragedy in Nottingham.

riotlady · 21/06/2023 11:06

Sounds about right to me. In my day that’s why we did pre-drinks at someone’s flat first- cheap bottle of vodka to get drunk at home, then straight to the club so you’d only have to pay entry and maybe a couple of shots while you were there.

Comefromaway · 21/06/2023 11:07

Direct comparison

Maybe my age but I used to go out with £5 - into a club for free, couple of halves of lager, 10 fags. Admittedly a good few years ago!

Club Entry £5
2 bottles cider/beer £9.70 - £11.50
Elf Bar £4.95
Shared Uber Home £10 ish

Closer to £30 than £50

crostini · 21/06/2023 11:10

There are student bars that are a lot cheaper than that. So 50 is too much for a student night 100%

5 pound is not reasonable in this day and age tho

crostini · 21/06/2023 11:12

And you can't even get ten decks of cigs anymore

She said her son is going to Wetherspoons. You can't get much cheaper than that, even in the student union bar where hopes and dreams go to die.

MargotBamborough · 21/06/2023 11:18

Also if we're talking about someone who is 20 or 21 now, that's the generation that turned 18 during Covid, and who will have a huge unrepayable debt hanging over them for their entire working lives whatever they do.

If you were him you would probably want to go out to pubs and clubs too.

gamerchick · 21/06/2023 11:20

Cheap night out that. He's reigning it in a bit

janeseymour78 · 21/06/2023 11:24

That's not a lot for a night out. Drinks and transport are expensive. Surely you must know this especially with cost of living expenses increasing?

crostini · 21/06/2023 11:26

@MargotBamborough

There are student clubs up and down the country serving 60p drinks/pay what you like/3 shots for a fiver etc!

ReachForTheMars · 21/06/2023 11:26

Dare you to price up 10 fags and those half largers and find a free club in his town. It wont be £5

2bazookas · 21/06/2023 11:36

If I was finacially supporting your profligate son I'd drastically cut his allowance and spend it on myself.

EVERYBODY has to learn to budget their money and live within their income.

It wasn't even that cheap when I was a student nearly 20 years ago.

MenoRageisReal · 21/06/2023 12:07

He's doing well to get a night out for just £50!!!

OP I was at Uni in the 80's when cash machines still gave out fivers, but I realise that was 40 years ago and TIMES CHANGE GrinGrinGrin you do sound epically out of touch.

MenoRageisReal · 21/06/2023 12:14

orangegato · 21/06/2023 07:58

He’s choosing expensive places. Grubby student clubs are £1 entry and £2.50 triples. I’d be absolutely paralytic for under a tenner.

Pubs at £6 a pint? No.

When was the last time you were in a student place? NONE of them round us are less than a £5 entry for starters.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 21/06/2023 12:18

£50 is nothing on a night out, is he in london? Easily double that...

2015 when I left. I get inflation etc but even if you double it. I went up north though.
