To be worried they will refuse to fix my phone?

Hi everyone
My phone has been playing up and turning itself off. I took it to a local repair shop and they had a look at it. They manage to switch it on again but now the touch screen won't work. They also took a microchip out and said that chip was causing problems. I hoped it would be a quick and cheap fix but it won't be. I have decided to send it back to the manufacturer who said they would fix it free of charge but it may take a while.

Now I am worried the manufacturer will refuse to fix it because I have already had it looked at by someone and a chip has been removed.

AIBU to think the manufacture will refuse to fix my phone now?

What type of phone is it? If its an iPhone then i'd be very surprised if Apple will touch it now.

It's highly unlikely Apple are going to fix your phone for free. Why did you not get in touch with them initially?

Againstmachine · 19/06/2023 17:51

Someone else has looked and removed a chip, I doubt if apple will entertain it.

bibbityboppityboo · 19/06/2023 17:51

If you've had it repaired / fiddled with by anyone other than the manufacturer, they'll know when they open it, you may have voided any warranty it had and they can turn around and refuse to repair it.

It's very likely, I've known it happen to people who've had a screen repaired in an independent shop, it's gone wrong and they've gone to apple who can't help because they used a different repair shop originally.

I didn't buy it from Apple. I bought it from a refurbished phone company. I didn't get in touch with them initially because I am on holiday right now and I thought a local repair shop could fix it within a few hours.

That's doesn't matter if it is in warranty, however perhaps your warranty lies with the company who sold it to you?

Yes I think the warranty lies with the company who sold it to much. If I went back to the repair shop and put the chip back in would they definitely know that someone else has looked at it?

Its an iphone 8

Depending how long the warranty is with the company who you bought the phone from, if they cover it under warranty get it repaired.

If not I wouldn't bother getting it privately repaired as it will cost you as much as a replacement iphone 8.

Well I bought it 'new' from them only a few months ago. This is the first and last time I will ever buy refurbished electronics

I had my iPhone 8 Plus early 2018 and it was newish then so no way was it 'new' even if the ship described it as that!

Apple won't touch it now. My iPhone 11 keeps playing up and I'm due an use grade funnily enough..

Upgrade* should really re read before I post 🤦🏻‍♀️.

I always buy refurbs. On the one occasion there was an issue I returned it and they sent a replacement immediately.

I have an iphone 8 that I bought 18 months ago as a refurb. The battery wasn't holding its charge as well as it should so I've just had a new
battery put in it and it's as good as new.

Don't be put off refurbs but if there's a problem you should return it to the original vendor for them to fix/replace.

chemistnightmare · 21/06/2023 09:36

Refurbished phones are not new though? That's a hefty level of misselling if that's how they are being advertised.

Well they advertised it as like new. I have had brand new apple products in the past and they have lasted years. This phone only lasted a few months. It was my own fault for trying to save money by buying refurbished.

Like new is very different to new. I thought you meant they had said it was actually new. There is nothing wrong with buying a refurbished phone but it was what; 5 years old when you bought it? I think that's is where the issue lies.

You said upthread Apple are going to fix it for free, why would they do that?

I never said apple would fix it. I said that the refurbished company I bought it from said they would fix it free of charge. But now I don't think they will because I have voided the warranty. I have no idea how old the phone was. They didn't mention that. The repair shop I took it to said refurbished companies often use fake apple parts which is probably the reason my phone has gone wrong. I took it to the repair shop because I desperately needed to check my WhatsApp messages to let people know I am ok.

The iPhone 8 was released in 2017 and discontinued in 2020. It's a very old phone.

I don't think you'll get anywhere with asking for it to be fixed now that someone else has removed a chip.
