To not have cut DD14 toenails

Ivegotadickheadex · 18/06/2023 21:51

DD is nearly 14.

Ex thinks it's my responsibility to cut her toenails.

I think it's DD's responsibility to cut her own toenails.

AIBU?

(Btw I remind her regularly)

A 14 year old should be cutting their own toe nails, although might need prompting!

Just show them some manky pictures of ingrown toe nails!

I've never cut my kids fingers or toenails, or my own. Nails self regulate.

Wut?

JFDIYOLO · 19/06/2023 13:06

@GalileoHumpkins

I raise your 'Wut?' response to 'I've never cut my kids fingers or toenails, or my own. Nails self regulate

With a heartfelt 'Dafuque??'

orangeflags · 19/06/2023 18:29

Self regulate?? I know that sometimes horses hooves will self trim, but I can't imagine that toe nails would do the same?

ThatFraggle · 19/06/2023 18:41

@HopelessEstateAgents has kids walking round with toenails like the dinosaurs out of Jurassic park

Edinvillian · 19/06/2023 19:03

My 10 year old has been cutting his own for the last 2-3 years. (Not because I refused he just started cutting them on his own).

DragonDoor · 19/06/2023 19:13

When it comes to self care skills etc, it’s really not about the age of a child, but their ability and the support they are given. Sometimes reminders are not enough.

Should she know how to cut her toenails by the age of 14? Yes.

Does she know how to do this? That is dependent on the adults around her and if they have spent time showing her how it do it.

Can she do it? She will only be able to cut her tonsils if she has the correct clippers/scissors- living between two houses can’t be easy. In addition, is she confident enough to do it? Could something be getting in the way like a fear of cutting herself?

EvilElsa · 19/06/2023 19:19

Surely this a skill a NT 14 year old will have picked up, along with showering independently, hair brushing, deodrant, teeth etc? I don't think I've ever actively shown mine how to do it, they know where the clippers are and just do. I obviously trimmed for them when they were little. Has DD spoken to you about this? Is she worried about doing it? I'd fins overlong toenails really uncomfortable.

The mental image of this is hilarious!
I used to own a dog and have laminate flooring, you could always hear her click clacking away. I bet nobody can sneak up on each other in that household!

Aye and you end up having to replace socks often because of holes.

Nails do not self regulate man!

When I was a teen I worked with a 17 year old who had not looked after his toenails. Ingrown toenail badly botched by chiropodist lead to a hospital amputation of his big toe.

So I would say a parent is responsible until child can be relied on to do it properly.

For reminding them maybe but not physically cutting the nails!!!

HopelessEstateAgents · 19/06/2023 20:21

@gamerchick @AmazingBouncingFerret

Well, none of us cut own nails I'm sorry if that distresses anyone.

Mine, will break before getting too long or I bite them. Toenails are pretty good at just coming off to reveal new nails...

I just checked DD (12) and all her nails are normal length,

I'm 42, exceptionally healthy and I've never, ever used a nail cutter. I did occasionally bite the kids nails when they were breastfeeding as they got scratchy and it was safer and less scary then trimming them.

I promise the kids nails are totally fine, we're just the type of family that cuts out the noise/all the unnecessary crap some ppl get caught up in.

To reveal new nails, yeah that's not how it works.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 19/06/2023 20:47

I bite my own fingernails, but even I have to cut my own toenails - mine definitely do not self-regulate!

(Incidentally, I do still cut my 13yo son's finger- and toenails. But that's because he is ASD/PMLD and completely incapable of doing them himslf. The shorter they are kept, the less he scratches himself.)

gamerchick · 19/06/2023 20:48

To reveal new nails

Man think that's enough internet for today Grin

The mind boggles.

No. Just no

I wouldn't be confident at 101yrs to cut my tonsils with clippers. There would certainly be a lot of fear involved 😱😂
((I know its a typo, and it's funny))

Toenails are pretty good at just coming off to reveal new nails...
You do realise that's not normal...unless you have a fungal problem or very damaged nail beds. Or not human.

EvilElsa · 19/06/2023 20:56

Reveal new nails 😳
Genuinely baffled

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/06/2023 20:59

Her responsibility.

I mean I probably would if my 14 yo asked me to (I currently have one and she never has asked) and I wasn’t busy, but I don’t expect her toenails to be a part of my life!

Justsomehousestuff · 19/06/2023 21:00

I wouldn't have taken it well if someone tried to cut my toenails at the age of 14!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/06/2023 21:01

angelikacpickles · 19/06/2023 20:50

Cutting finger and toenails is not unnecessary crap!

Biting nails is a really bad habit and something you try to train kids out of - it’s really unhygienic and leads to things like threadworm - I think it’s the main cause of it spreading.

Toenails should not be coming off to reveal new toenails

This is giving "Hello, fellow humans. I too am a human. Moulting is extremely inconvenient, is it not? – Hang on, which planet are we on? Didn't Xurz say it was Phaeton?"

TMess · 19/06/2023 21:18

Something is quite different between the way your toenails and mine function. 😳
