Supermarket delivery early Sunday AM

Perry13579 · 18/06/2023 08:06

My neighbours get their groceries delivered between 7am and 8am on Sunday mornings. It's a terraced street with narrow houses so effectively the van is parked right under my window (which of course last night was open due to the heat). Ten minute of noisy shuffling crates around wakes the whole house up every time and it royally pisses me off. AIBU?

Once upon a time I used to book the 6am Ocado slot. YABU

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 19/06/2023 10:04

I get mine between 6.30 and 7.30 on a Sunday because I have a 3 and 1 year old and it works best for us.
Most of my neighbours are elderly and have vans slamming doors and doing work during the day when my children are sleeping which annoys me. But what can you do.

If I got asked to change my slot, I might consider it, depending on which neighbour had asked tbh. Some I like, some I dont. But id only move it maybe an hour later at most, if at all.
Gotta do what you gotta do.

That does seem very early for a grocery delivery but nothing you can do about it. They’re not doing anything wrong and I’m not sure they are being impolite either. Deliveries of all sorts happen early.

YABU! Jeez 🙄

@Chatterboxy

can you explain why you think she's BU to be annoyed at being woken up?

DarkSignOfTheMoon · 19/06/2023 10:11

For me it's how you frame it to yourself. This is especially important if you're already decided not to speak to her and, therefore, it is going to continue. Otherwise, the annoyance itself is what'll ends up being the worst of it.

As pp suggests, I'd use the time to go and get a cup of tea, take it back to bed to drink with a book and a little read. If I drop off back to sleep = great. if not, at least I've used the time to do something vaguely nice rather than lying there seething.

My neighbours do this on a Saturday and it is very loud and annoying. They have younger kids then us so are awake and we (after years of early mornings) aren't up at the crack of dawn anymore and Saturday is the only day we don't have work/activities meaning we potentially have the chance to sleep a little extra.

However, even though all the crashing and banging is very loud, I imagine if they're out and about at the weekend, it makes sense for them to get it early so they can get on with their weekend so I'm just getting on with it, but I really sympathise with you, it's crazy how loud it is when it's under your window!

@IamnotSethRogan why not talk to them? They might be just as happy to get it at another time.

maybe they'll say they will/won't change slots, but nothing to lose by talking to them.

Lol my neighbours delivery is here right now , under my window . Every Sunday morning altho it did used to be earlier. Its sooooo annoying especially when tesco and iceland is on my street. Tesco doors are a 2 min walk and the neighbour drives !!
Why sooooo early ?!

You really think you can govern your neighbours shopping habits?

ThursdayFreedom · 19/06/2023 10:26

@Perry13579

i was going to suggest talking to her, explaining the issue & asking nicely if she can consider any other slots. But you don't want to talk to her, so other than blocking the space they park in, you'll just have to see the quietly.

I used to get an early slot as I'm awake with the sun/chirping birds (hence being bloody tired & having huge bags under my eyes) but my neighbour recently retired and I've changed my slot so it doesn't wake her.

If I hadn't considered this myself, I wouldn't have minded her asking and I'd have changed it if possible or explained why I couldn't.

people getting pissy about being asked are strange to me. Asked not told! What's the problem??

YANBU, I wouldn't dream of doing that to my neighbours and I don't know anyone who would get shopping delivered at that time. But judging by some of the posts on here for some people it's all about what's convenient for them and to hell with everyone else.
I am quite sure they'd be the first ones complaining if it was happening to them.

What do you mean “happening to them”? Suffering through ten mins of delivery noise on a Sunday morning. I live in a terraced house and therefore have chosen to love cheek by jowl with other people simply living their life, so a certain amount of noise is to be expected. Also the delivery driver has a job to do.

Do you expect OP’s neighbours to canvass the entire street to find a time slot to work for all? My DP works nights, often on weekends too, and so noise later in the day disturbs him. However he’d never dream of policing other people’s lives! The entitlement is off the charts. Noise cancelling headphones are a wonderful
thing.

Get a grip.

Yeah, but there's a minimum £40 order value before Ocado will accept the order😀

Alargeoneplease89 · 19/06/2023 10:46

Offer to pay for a later delivery slot 😂

babybumbum · 19/06/2023 10:47

You should not use the horn on your car between the hours of 11:30pm and 7am in built up areas.

I'd say this gives a good indication of if YABU or not.

RoseAndRose · 19/06/2023 10:51

Yeah, it's a bit of a bugger when neighbourhood noise (of any kind) disturbs sleep. But it's not unreasonable to get early morning supermarket deliveries, even at the weekend.

My pet hate is slightly (or very) drunk people getting out of a taxi in the wee small hours and screeching at each other as they walk along to their own house (then drop something and shriek). I doubt very much that the delivery driver is shrieking

I assume this is what the neighbour is thinking, get it done and leave the day free. She is at home most of the week though, so it doesn't have to be be Sunday AM. I would just prefer a weekday when I'm up anyway! Or even Saturday to be honest.

I wouldn't say anything to her - she would think I was mad. She is the kind of person who does exactly what she wants and wouldn't consider how it affects anyone else (yes, this is not the first / only thing).

I don't know about the price of the slots as I don't use the supermarket she does. Tesco round here is a fixed £5.50 whenever you have it.

A fixed £5.50 is really expensive. Our Tesco delivery is £2 to £7 for a 1 hour slot, with the earlier ones and later ones tending to be the cheapest, and Weekends the most expensive.
