To let 5yo in my bed most nights

weirdo123 · 17/06/2023 21:21

5yo DS is ND with delayed speech. I also have younger boy of 3, NT.

Bedtime we put both together each night but guaranteed older one who's ND will come into my new around 2/3am. Some nights he won't settle at all and calls for me so eventually ends up falling asleep in our bed

Younger one seems content in own bed

I don't mind my big boy coming in, neither does hubby, but is it weird, should it stop and if so when

I think as long as you all are happy, and getting good sleep, its perfectly fine and normal. My 5 year old regularly jumps in with us, and my 2 year old still sleeps with us every night, and I love it. Do what works for you and your family!

Pumpkinbumkin200 · 17/06/2023 21:31

Yep - if you are happy with it carry on I say. It's only a problem until it's a problem for you.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 17/06/2023 21:31

OP my 5 year old crawls into my bed every single night. At some point between 1am and 4am. It doesn't usually wake me up, I just find her there next to me every morning. I absolutely love it

weirdo123 · 17/06/2023 21:33

I love it too but wondered how many other do it etc

Nothing weird at all.

I expect most of the worlds kids cosleep with parents for whatever reason and they grow up undamaged by it.

23334jjcccc · 17/06/2023 22:14

My 4 year old does the same ,I love it as long he doesn’t kick me in his sleep but I’ve started putting pillow by his legs. He was the perfect sleeper untill the gate came off his door at 2 1/2 😄 I’m not fighting to get him back in his own bed he’ll do it when ready x

TheMousePipes · 17/06/2023 22:18

He’s 5. Enjoy the closeness and the sleepy snuggles. I would give my right arm to have one night like that again, it passes so quickly.

Betsybee88 · 17/06/2023 22:18

My 4 year old has never been a consistent sleeper, I mean she's not long gone to sleep and she's been up since 6. Some days she'll fall asleep at 6pm and sleep all night, sometimes she won't.
I'm not gonna lie, it does grate on me at times as she's the only one that has been like this, she has a consistent routine, we avoid any foods/drinks that will aggravate her sleeping, plenty of fresh air and exercise.
Sometimes she'll come in our bed and we just go with it. We've had years of battling and no sleep doesn't help any of us.
So no, YANBU.

momentarybliss · 17/06/2023 22:18

My 5 year old and 3 year old end up with me both nights. I'm enjoying the cuddles whilst they last. Not gonna be happening in 10 years and I bet I will miss it then

momentarybliss · 17/06/2023 22:19

*most nights

AtrociousCircumstance · 17/06/2023 22:20

It’s absolutely fine. In fact if everyone’s happy with it, it’s a real positive.

FloweryName · 17/06/2023 22:22

I think this is more common than people openly admit to. Keep doing it as long as you want. It’s unlikely he’ll still be doing it in his teens so enjoy it while it lasts.

Noicant · 17/06/2023 22:22

My 3yr old has started turning up in my room at 2-3am looking to be cuddled to sleep. It’s lovely (she sleeps horizontally across the bed though, not so lovely). Nothing wrong with your lovely boy bunking in with you.

IhearyouClemFandango · 17/06/2023 22:25

Our 5.5 year old still comes in every night in the early hours. He just comes in and falls back asleep, I’m not even aware normally. His older brother did too up until about the same age, only stopped when a newborn appeared and disturbed his sleep 😂

babbscrabbs · 17/06/2023 22:26

My 7yo does this a lot

ThanksAntsThants23 · 17/06/2023 22:27

My 5 yo ds comes into my bed every night too. I don’t really mind but I’m a single parent so there’s plenty of room, he has always been scared of being in his own room at night and I while I encourage him to go to sleep his own bed at bedtime I wouldn’t want him lying there terrified and alone in the middle of the night. Recently he has surprised himself by sleeping all night in his own bed a few times so I wonder if it’s going to start tailing off a bit now.

Begonne · 17/06/2023 22:33

Dd was nearly 7 before she was sleeping the night in her own bed, and still slides in for a morning cuddle.

I think it’s a bit odd how we have our dc close by during the day but expect them to sleep all alone at night.

ExcitingTimes2021 · 17/06/2023 22:36

It’s not strange and probably a lot more common the you think x

ohmyohmy123 · 17/06/2023 22:37

My 11 year old sometimes comes in with us...he's got issues and struggles to sleep. He's getting bigger though so one of us adults will go get in his bed Grin

Pawtucketbrew · 17/06/2023 22:39

My 10 year old still comes in now and again. I think in many cultures bed sharing is really common and nothing to worry about. I personally think humans are designed to sleep together, we are pack animals.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 17/06/2023 22:40

Not at all strange and won't last forever so enjoy it, you'll miss it when it stops!

My youngest is 11 and over the past year has stopped sleeping in our bed completely. Used to always fall asleep there and I loved to get in beside them, they would snuggle right up and chuck a leg over me like a little limpet. It was glorious.

Of course I'm completely glossing over the fact that they would grind their teeth which drove me mad.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/06/2023 22:41

My 23 year old still comes in with me some nights.

Honestly there’s nothing to beat snuggling with your child. IMO

ohfook · 17/06/2023 22:50

Nah mine did it for years then stopped without problems when he got older. Do whatever gets you through the night is my motto.

weirdo123 · 17/06/2023 23:43

Cool sounds like no issues then. I do think yes enjoy while it lasts so glad I'm not alone. Sometimes we have both boys in and it's a king size bed so no issues but usually little one is fine
