Baby rash not fading on glass test

Sorry this isn’t an AIBU but posting here for the traffic.

My 8 month old has come out in a rash that started on her upper neck and chest a couple of days ago but has now spread all over her body. We’ve stripped her down to cool her off and have done the glass test and it’s not fading!

Just called 111 and they’re having a clinician call me back ‘in 2 hours’ but when I last called 111 for my toddler they called me back over 12 hours later and I’m worried that if it’s something sinister she needs to be seen sooner rather than later.

Here’s some pictures of the rash. It looks like heat rash I think so hopefully it’s just that but it’s not fading under glass and is spreading all over her body even though she’s cool now. She’s also getting some larger blotches (see second pic).

Her temp is currently 36.1 but she did have a fever yesterday and the night before last.

Should I just wait for the call back or should I take her to A&E?

Super bad advice from 111. Glad you’re at A&E now.

SquigglePigs · 17/06/2023 21:42

Hope you're both doing ok OP

BlueSkiesBlueRain · 17/06/2023 21:45

The rash doesn’t look that concerning, especially if she’s generally well, but with a non fading rash, you don’t need to think twice - A&E right away.

Hope you get seen soon and hope all is ok.

She’s been triaged and her pulse, temp and oxygen are all good and the nurse doesn’t think it’s meningitis because she’s so alert but waiting for a dr to check her out. There’s a 6 hour wait to see a dr though and everyone is playing really loud games on their phones in the waiting area 😩

If they’re making you wait 6 hours, then they’re not worried. That’s a good sign.

It’s going to be a long wait but well done for being there!

Agree it’s reassuring that they’re not concerned enough for her to be seen sooner. When my son had a non blanching rash he bypassed everyone in the waiting room and was seen immediately. They really are fab with kids in my experience. Hope all is ok

My son gets viral rashes like this after he has been unwell. Scared me to death the first time but now we know why. Hopefully it's nothing serious OP and something like this.

Olivia199 · 18/06/2023 08:44

How are you both doing this morning?

Mine too, I was terrified the first time. Definitely better to be safe rather than sorry though and it's definitely not wasting a&e time

We’re all good thank you. We finally got seen at 2.30am last night and I was so deliriously tired that I could barely answer the drs questions! It’s just a viral rash thankfully and she also has an ear infection. We were sent home and just told to treat with calpol and ibuprofen. She slept in my bed when we got home and we cuddled all night until 10am so feeling a lot more human now.

Thanks everyone for your support, really glad I went in even though it was nothing to worry about. Would much rather that then keep a baby with meningitis at home!

There is something seriously wrong when you have to wait all that time to be seen. But I am so pleased all is well. You did the right thing. It is important that people are not put off going to A&E by the ridiculous waits when there is something potentially serious that needs seeing.

The nurse said it wasn’t even busy last night, it’s often much worse. I asked why he thought it was and he thinks it’s a combination of so many things - the NHS needs a major shake up and lots more money to be functioning as it should.

Thank goodness all ok ♥️♥️ and quiet day of cuddles for you both!

So glad all is okay. Well done for getting it all checked. Hope you've had a nice chilled day!

SunshineShines · 18/06/2023 17:12

I’m usually one of the ones saying ‘don’t go to A&E - wait for a GP appt’. But in this instance, a spreading rash that doesn’t fade under a glass? A & E straight away

Soubriquet · 18/06/2023 17:21

I’m glad she’s ok but still keep a close eye.

I had meningitis when I was 2.5, so 32 years ago.

My mum was insisting on me being seen as her neighbours son had just had it. I was apparently being more whingy than normal and had a bit of vomiting but nothing that screamed meningitis apart from the rash.

She was brushed off by the doctors claiming it was just a rash and I had a virus, but the nurse actually stood up for my mum and insisted on the doctor doing the spinal tap.

It was positive. I was in the hospital for 8 weeks, though some of that was because I developed a cyst on my hip that needed to be surgically removed and my leg was in a lift.

I eventually lost most of my hearing. I have no hearing at all in my right ear, and I’ve lost 70% of hearing in my left. Luckily, I had already developed most of my speech so I talk ok and not have the slur some deaf people have.

Im not telling you this to panic you. I’m sure she’s perfectly fine but I am saying, if you feel at any time, that something isn’t right, go straight back.
