To think that each area should have one dog free park ?

Each time I take my dc to the park there are so many off road dogs bothering us , no recall and a nuisance. The school can’t run or play on the grass due to dog mess and on a hot day it just stinks as the sun warms it up 🤢

can’t have a picnic either due to dogs trying to get at the food.

we once went to a lovely park up in London that was dog free and it was amazing, kids could run about. I’m not saying all parks should be like this but one in each area would surely be fair ?

Yes would be great as even when shit is picked up, there are still remnants left behind or more if the dog has diarrhoea! Disgusting to them come along and try to sit on the grass where that may have happened and kids doing cartwheels etc getting their hands in it.
There should be designated dog parks like in America with water fountains etc

Dunnoburt · 17/06/2023 20:46

Yanbu......we have a "dog free" space.....yet there are always dogs present.......pisses me off.

Another anti dog thread, there hasn't been one for a week?

Well it is the weekend after all 😄

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/06/2023 20:52

I would rather pay for a field to let my dogs run around.

👏👏👏

Agree. I actually bought a year membership to a nature reserve that doesn't allow dogs so I could have somewhere to go and enjoy with DD where I don't have to worry about her treading in dog shit or being jumped on by someone's 'friendly' dog. There should be more places like this that are free too.

LookAtThatArtwork · 17/06/2023 21:03

Where I live there is a children's play area and a separate field for dog walking. Whenever I go there there's always a dog in the play area. The dog walking field is a few steps out of the park and is fenced off. There's no need for dogs to be in the play area.

A little while ago, me and dc were having a picnic. A dog ran over and took a sandwich from dc hand and ran off with it. Owner was round the corner and didn't even see what happened. Dc was upset and now worried whenever we have a picnic and there's a dog.

I always look for dog free parks but there aren't many around.

Won't somebody please think of the cartwheeling children!!

Serious question: in the scenario you describe where we as dog owners do our due diligence and pick up our dogs poo (which any decent dog owner should happily do) but it's not completely firm and leaves that tiny remnant in the grass (and it is only usually ever tiny) that despite our best efforts we cannot physically remove - what would you have us do?

Looks like you're in agreement there, that you can't physically remove every trace of shit. Reasonable then, surely, for us all to agree for a tiny percentage of public space to be set aside where you're not allowed to leave even tiny smears of shit dotted around?

SurferRona · 17/06/2023 21:14

Agree! So long as we can have child free parks too to visit instead. Their noise, sticky hands, the squealing, the littering, the scooters….

frogssnailandpuppydogtails · 17/06/2023 21:25

oh the littering in parks left by picnic goers every damn morning when I go to country park with my dog . 😩

TeresaCrowd · 17/06/2023 21:33

we used to have an excellent split. There was one fields one side of a (quiet, dead end residential) road that had a sports court, swings, slide etc in it, and another that was just a grassy Rec. Generally the one with the stuff was used by kids and the one with nothing used by dog walkers. Then cue the council building another sports court and play area in the open Rec. The reality is from September to May it is still only used by dog walkers but in the summer families now spread across both and moan about the dogs. What used to be self policing got interfered with and now suits nobody!

Dunnoburt · 17/06/2023 21:34

Rather my nipper touched a wrapper than dog shit or residue......

lljkk · 17/06/2023 21:34

What is an "area" ? A county, a town, within 5 straight miles of every resident?

Dunnoburt · 17/06/2023 21:38

Dog fouling is a major concern to many people, not just because of the mess it causes, but because it can be a health risk. Dogs may deposit roundworm eggs (toxocara canis) in their faeces, which become infectious after about 3 weeks, and can remain so for up to 2 years.

CatsOnTheChair · 17/06/2023 21:38

I've voted YANBU, but actually, I think you are.
Dogs shouldn't be in kids play areas. None of them.
But there should be one large grassed area where dogs can be off lead, other grassed areas (plus majority of beaches) should be dogs on leads only.

BarelyLiterate · 17/06/2023 21:41

As a dog owner myself, OP, I agree. Wherever possible, each local authority area should have at least one dog-free park and one child-free park. Whether it is feasible to have more would depend on local factors.

BubziOwl · 17/06/2023 21:44

YANBU!! I'd love this. I'm sick of people's dogs jumping up my toddler and my newborn's pram. I'm glad your dog is friendly but I don't want it sticking it's nose in my baby's face all the same, thank you.

We actually have a dog-free rec nearby, but idiot dog owners think the rules don't apply for them. Kids play sports there, but the coaches have to spend time picking up dog poo before practice despite it being a bloody dog free rec ground. People with dogs are regularly asked to leave and they refuse.

I can't think of anywhere else at all that's dog-free in a 30 mile radius (and trust me I've thought of everywhere I can!) so it's not as if the dog owners aren't spoilt for choice. Even the local national trust places allow dogs. There's a couple of small parks that require dogs to be on leads, but as you can imagine that's regularly ignored too.

lljkk · 17/06/2023 22:29

Borough, district, parish, town ? How local authority is local authority?

CwmYoy · 17/06/2023 23:01

Maybe dog owners should train their pets to shit at home. Guide dogs are trained to do that.

There's no need for people to let their dogs shit in parks or anywhere else.

Also I didn't say dogs should be banned from all parks - just that they should be on leads in parks that allow them.

JamSandle · 17/06/2023 23:01

I love doggos. But I hate bad owners. And there's so many.

Wolfiefan · 17/06/2023 23:03

I have dogs.
Luckily round here there are dog free areas and areas where dogs are allowed.

SunnyEgg · 17/06/2023 23:05

Yanbu

I'd prefer more dog parks over dog free parks

This. And I want a teen free park. I’m absolutely sick of being at the park while Kyle shouts to Caleb to stfu because he wants to shag grace, while tossing his empty Pringles tub on the floor.

sweetkitty · 17/06/2023 23:09

I have a large breed dog and always walked her on lead near children as she lots scary. she always likes a bit of privacy for poos so takes her self off to long grass or behind a tree which makes locating it such a joy.

Our country park is utterly full of goose poo. There’s so many more of them than a few years ago (probably due to a covid explosion of people walking down and feeding them), there’s ok everywhere. There’s a nice Sandy beach area beside the swing park and I’ve seen parents allow their children to go barefoot to play in the sand and water. It’s rotten with goose poo.
