To dislike store offering NHS discounts

TryingNotToBeLate · 17/06/2023 11:15

The store gets to look kind and generous but surly they don’t take it out of their profit but just adjust their pricing accordingly, ie regular price goes up a bit to balance out the few who will pay less.
Same with x % goes to charity - sounds nice but realistically it is the customer paying for it.

Shop elsewhere.

JaneSeeMore · 17/06/2023 11:17

Don’t shop there then.

Ilikewinter · 17/06/2023 11:18

Dinopawus · 17/06/2023 11:18

It gets people through the door and they may be tempted to spend more because of the "discount". It also generates loyalty.

I'm willing to bet that it It benefits the shops more than the discount receivers.

Balloonhearts · 17/06/2023 11:19

All stores do some kind of discount to someone. B^Q do over 60s, furniture and carpet stores give each others employees discounts. Its unreasonable to expect no-one to ever get any perks because of their jobs.

AnnaMagnani · 17/06/2023 11:19

Don't shop there then.

You may struggle though as there are NHS discounts in loads of places.

FilthyforFirth · 17/06/2023 11:20

Well aren't you delightful... But yes, booo to those cleaner, porters, poorly paid nurses and junior docs getting a small helping hand. YABU

WetBandits · 17/06/2023 11:21

Can we not just have one nice thing 😂😂😂

GottaGirlcrush · 17/06/2023 11:21

I love using my blue light card!

Discounts all over...dislike that too op?

ChristmasKraken · 17/06/2023 11:22

Companies get a tax rebate on charitable donations...
Most big companies have a budget for donations etc. I mean, the main reason is to make people feel better about their brand and therefore to shop spend more with them, so it isn't altruistic. The discounts also attract people in who might not otherwise shop there, so potentially whilst they might make a smaller profit margin with those customers, they're still making some profit, and it's extra profit they wouldn't have otherwise made.

Womencanlift · 17/06/2023 11:23

Is it just NHS discounts you have an issue with? What about veterans, pensioners, other emergency services?

Also of the shop has a sale do you have an issue with those discounts as surely they impact profits too?

There are lots of other very hard working people on low wages in different professions. Why should they have to pay more than a GP?

SandandSky · 17/06/2023 11:24

To be fair unless you are on the blue light discount website you wouldn’t actually realise how many offer it… I’m really surprised at some of them when I look at the offers on the website, as they don’t exactly advertise them widely.

But, hey, we get paid the big bucks in the NHS so I guess it’s a ridiculous idea 🙄

PinkIcedCream · 17/06/2023 11:24

It's an advertising gimmick and really no different to a "loss leader" product to get people in through the doors to shop.

You won't be paying more for your shopping overall to make up lost profits. That's not how these discount schemes work.

CC4712 · 17/06/2023 11:26

What about asda points, tesco club cards, nectar etc. Do you object to those too OP???

Mrsjayy · 17/06/2023 11:26

The blue light card isnt just NhS anyway its a thank you for to people working in the emergency services as well I don't know why you are begrudging people a bit of money off their purchases !

Invisimamma · 17/06/2023 11:28

You need to pay for the blue light card, £5 a year, I know some places do NHS discount without the car though and just staff ID.

Yabu, we've saved hundreds possibly thousands with DPs blue light discount.

Public sector workers aren't often high earners so small savings add up and it makes a big difference.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/06/2023 11:32

I've saved loads with the BLC. I'm not NHS, I work for a health care organisation. It's so tenuous who can get it. I'm home based, I haven't worked frontline in years.

It's surprising the amount of people who can get a card, I didn't realise until a couple of years ago that I could. I've worked for the same place forever.

squidgybits · 17/06/2023 11:46

I don't work for the NHS but I think the blue light discounts are great. It should not have to be the case, I would prefer NHS workers to be paid fairly but they are not. They deserve more IMO
Do you dislike pensioner and student discounts OP?
You sound like you could also go on for hours about people on benefits

TeenLifeMum · 17/06/2023 11:47

You can actually access the blue light card by signing up as a member of your local hospital trust. You’ll get the odd membership newsletter and be asked to vote electronically in governor elections and that’s it.

Tiredalwaystired · 17/06/2023 11:57

You could always join the NHS and be on the other side..? There are plenty of vacancies.

Is this actually true? I’ve been a member for years, since birth of my son 17years ago. Regularly get newsletters and asked to vote but never seen anything about this.

HaHa yes , I was going to suggest this . Come and get on board with us .

I mean, much I was grateful for The Thursday Clap in Lockdown , I'm much happier with my discount from BLLC

And what about those pesky students eh? Enjoying 10-20% off with their UniDays cards .

User12376598 · 17/06/2023 12:04

I get some things cheaper because I'm over 60, I suppose a lot wouldn't agree with that, not with us old boomers all being loaded and that.

KitchenSinkLlama · 17/06/2023 12:06

OP the daily mail is ➡️ way.
