To dislike store offering NHS discounts

TryingNotToBeLate · 17/06/2023 11:15

The store gets to look kind and generous but surly they don’t take it out of their profit but just adjust their pricing accordingly, ie regular price goes up a bit to balance out the few who will pay less.
Same with x % goes to charity - sounds nice but realistically it is the customer paying for it.

Folks you do know that good though the BLS is, you can get 10% of in pizza express/go outdoors/shuh by joining pretty nearly any other organisation on the planet?

I also got the restaurant savings when I worked for John Lewis along with my discount in store and discounted holidays at JL private hotels.

As others have said, it's not a race to the bottom. There are more than 100,000 vacancies, including 39,000 registered nurse roles in the NHS. Feel free to apply.

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 17/06/2023 13:29

People will get upset about anything, won’t they?!

prescribingmum · 17/06/2023 13:34

FGS NHS discount and blue light card significantly predate the pandemic. It is nothing to do with who worked the hardest during Covid and everything to do with attracting customers to a business.

Student discount is widely offered and there are students who may not need it for one reason or another - shall we also start complaining about that. Same with pensioners and the benefits they get at some stores/entry prices etc.

This post is ridiculous and full of resentment for no reason

TheSnowyOwl · 17/06/2023 13:38

Blue Light Card gets money off from a huge range of places. Then again, loads of other places give money off to a different range of people eg students, elderly, children etc.

N27 · 17/06/2023 13:41

Not specifically NHS but I’m just against discounts in general. If a company can offer a discount then it’s because the item was overpriced in the first place. Why can’t we just have fair pricing for all??

I am self employed with a small business and have been asked a few times about discounts. I put a lot of work into calculating my costings and pricing my products fairly. Things aren’t cheaper to make just because the customer is Nhs/over60/studying/it’sathursday

plominoagain · 17/06/2023 13:52

McDperks employee scheme gets their staff similar discounts too in various stores . You got a problem with that too ?

fitzwilliamdarcy · 17/06/2023 13:58

I think people have gotten really weird about this since the pandemic, probably because the presiding narrative seemed to suggest that everyone except NHS staff were on furlough, sunbathing.

I honestly couldn’t get worked up about this. The NHS is a massive employer so it makes sense to target them.

BoohooWoohoo · 17/06/2023 14:05

Student schemes like Unidays are very useful and available in a lot of shops (and despite the name available to Sixth Formers too)

FarmGirl78 · 17/06/2023 14:26

FloweryName · 17/06/2023 12:42

Considering the NHS is full of well paid people who don’t need discounts while there are people with equally or more worthwhile jobs who are significantly underpaid, I agree with you.

I deleted my first reply for fear of being banned, but to put it very mildly, you are being unreasonable.

Anothercrappyusername · 17/06/2023 14:39

Blue card discount is for care workers too. Most of the discounts offered on that scheme, could probably be found with a little help from Google, If you were that bothered op.

Ah, things have recently changed, just had a look and band 6 is 35k. I was mistakenly thinking back to a couple of years ago. I guess it depends how long you have been in the job right? But the point stands. I am band 7 and earn 43k staying with the nhs, I could leave tomorrow and earn 90k. I don't because it doesnt align with my morals as it wouldn't be serving the client group that needs the most help. Of course I don't need a 10% discount, but there are many trainees who will find it helpful.

Yeah of course your morals are worth more than £45k. Next joke please.

Bubblyb00b · 17/06/2023 15:05

horrible and mean. go shop somewhere else.

Selfesteem23 · 17/06/2023 15:18

Tortiemiaw · 17/06/2023 13:08

'Full of'? I'd best check my last month's payslip then, must have been a 0 missed off....

Me too considering my 25k salary ( after the pay rise) isn’t that far off minimum wage, the lowest band had to be increased in April due to the minimum wage being higher….. but yeah all on loads of money!

Many NHS workers are paid less than the average wage. Especially when it comes to mumsnet and all the ‘6 figure high earners’ moaning about our discounts…..

Kazzyhoward · 17/06/2023 15:20

During covid, a local GP's wife tried to shame our village bakery/pieshop/sandwich shop for not offering NHS discounts. She apparently went in with her hubbies card (she wasn't an NHS worker), and was aggrieved when the two ladies who own/run it wouldn't give a discount. Loads of locals piled on to her about how unreasonable she was given the two owners barely made minimum wage themselves on the hours they worked to run the shop! They're hardly going to offer discounts to people earning several times more than themselves are they??

dontcrowdthemushrooms · 17/06/2023 15:26

Having worked in retail, it doesn’t work like that. We would buy the products in from X manufacturer at a trade price of Y and and RRP of Z. Our profit was Z-Y, so if we chose to lower the Z, that WAS coming out of our profits and not affecting other customers - we wouldn’t have listed the item over RRP or we wouldn’t have been able to sell it to anyone else.
Different if it’s a small business with no middleman, but even then discounts are calculated as a loss.

Mrsjayy · 17/06/2023 15:28

RaininSummer · 17/06/2023 12:58

Blue light winds me up a bit as I worked in public services throughout the pandemic and pay is far from amazing but zilch discounts for us.

Loads of people worked out of home through the pandemic, I don't see your point

hattyhathat · 17/06/2023 15:30

And would you say this if you were eligible for the discount?

TizerorFizz · 17/06/2023 15:36

@Mrsjayy Lots of services kept going in the pandemic. Not working from home! Teachers in some cases. Rubbish collection workers. The Police. Only the NHS who do have very well paid doctors and managers are recognised. Many people made contributions and are forgotten about. I’m slightly fed up with “special” cases too. Lots of people make contributions and many in the NHS are not the lowest paid. They just think they are.

Kazzyhoward · 17/06/2023 15:39

The average NHS wage is higher than the national average wage!

If anyone deserves a discount, it's all those workers earning less than national average (that will of course include the most lowly paid NHS workers).

LillyoftheMountain · 17/06/2023 15:47

Shop elsewhere?

you wouldn’t be saying that if it was a pride flag!

margegunderson · 17/06/2023 15:49

OP you sound pretty surly. But I think you meant surely.
Don't thank me.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2023 16:32

I don't like the ones that offer Armed forces but not NHS

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2023 16:33

Offer all services a discount if you are going to. Not just some. Or don't do it at all!

Sissynova · 17/06/2023 16:36

What a non issue. Lots of places offer student discount too. Better boycott them.

SandandSky · 17/06/2023 16:49

FloweryName · 17/06/2023 12:42

Full of!?!?

they must have missed a 0 off my £700 a month payslip

in all serious you are focusing on a certain percentage of NHs Employees, certainly not a majority

have you considered the cleaners, housekeeping, hospitality, health care assistants and receptionists that work incredibly hard but are on significantly than £30k? They make up a huge percentage of the workforce and do a lot of the shittier bits for their money while working 12.5 hour shifts and putting up with a lot of stress
