We are renovating our house and will convert the back of the garage into the kitchen as it is tiny atm. We will also know the wall between dining room and kitchen.

my question do we move the current kitchen space about 1m into the hallway or not? It is current dead space in the hallway.

I think this will make the kitchen/dining room seem more spacious. As the final dimensions of just the kitchen part will only be 2.6x4m. I think the extra bit of space as you walk in will make a difference .the halll way would still be 3m long and fit our shoe rack etc as we won’t touch the bit near the front door.

Husband thinks the hall way will be too small of we do this.

A hall is simply a space you walk through to get to a room. So I don’t think it needs to be massive. Especially when you can make use of the space in the kitchen

Snippit · 18/06/2023 18:34

Why are some hallways so huge, it’s a waste of useable space. So long as any load bearing walls are dealt with properly I’d go for maximising space where it’s really needed, you don’t live in the hallway.

LakesDad · 18/06/2023 18:42

What you want to do looks possibly a little complex.

You look like you are extending the back of the garage area to match the rear exterior wall, the garage currently may be single skin wall and you don't say what roof it currently has?...If its flat roof then it's doable.

A simpler and cheaper solution from a building perspective would be to leave the garage intact but knock a doorway through into the rear of the garage from the current kitchen. Then have your utility at the back of the garage with an additional sink etc.

This will not compromise your garage space that much. Then take down the wall between the dining room and kitchen as you show and create your kitchen/diner which is straightforward, taking up the redundant hallway space. Your washing machine/dryer/freezer etc can all be in the rear garage utility area.

Much simpler, much cheaper.....

Don’t ask Mumsnet ask an architect. Small fee, great advice if you choose the right one.

I am an architect.

Ps. Op you don’t need an architect for this, that would be a waste of money.

I'd go with your idea.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 18/06/2023 19:20

Definitely take the extra kitchen space.

Porkerhontas · 18/06/2023 20:13

We have recently taken some of our dead space in hallway to create a rectangular room and I think it’s the best decision we made. We already had an open dining kitchen but it was never quite right. Literally took 1.5m off the hall and it made such a big difference.

WonderingWanda · 18/06/2023 20:36

Do it, much better use of the space.

finished31 · 19/06/2023 00:01

Not sure if it's already been said but what about putting the kitchen in the dining room and vice versa. If you opened the wall as planned it would be a good size.

ChellyT · 19/06/2023 00:53

I love it! Opens up the kitchen/dining area. You can family and friends over in the dining area while a few of you are busy in the kitchen grabbing tea/food.

Which way does your kitchen/dining face? I hope you getting plenty of sunlight in that area it'll make the whole space so much more enjoyable.

I'd also be looking at opening up between the lounge and dining too.

Mrsgreen100 · 19/06/2023 09:09

Looks like a plan to me !
I would however move front door forward.
into porch it would give a more roomy hall
hallways are important especially if you have kids

Daftasabroom · 19/06/2023 09:13

You don't need the blue door. Assuming you will keep the existing return as a load bearing pier the sink is also in wrong place.

WaltzingWaters · 19/06/2023 09:17

As long as it works structurally I would change it. Who needs a big hallway? Much more time will be spent in the kitchen!

finished31 · 19/06/2023 11:09

This is what I meant.

Counters all around and an island. You wouldn't need to alter the hallway either.
