Am I paying too much for sky?

Just wondering what everyone else is paying. I've just renewed my contract and as soon as put the phone down I felt like I'd been ripped off. I have kids, multi screen, movies, box sets , and of course wifi. My new contract will be £111 a month. I've got 30 days cooling period and I'm not sure whether to cancel with them and try and get a better deal. Just feels so expensive to me. Especially as my last contract with them was £65 a month! Would be good to hear what everyone else is paying.

That sounds about right to be honest. We are £97 for the sky package, sports and Wi-Fi. It’s so expensive but my partner won’t be without the sports package!

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 16/06/2023 10:47

Bloody hell! I got rid of Sky years ago and just use the free apps, loads of choice for nothing. If you are sure you want it and can afford it phone up and threaten to leave completely. They will come back with a better offer. Say no, you want to leave. They will come back with a better offer. When you hit a state where they cancel your subscription, leave it a couple of days after it expires and then wait for the new customer offers. If you have another adult in the house get them to take out contract if you can’t be a new customer for x months.

We got rid of sky a couple of years ago and although it took a bit of getting used to, I t’s fine. I pay for a Disney + subscription for my DD (£8 a month) and Now TV (with all the sky channels/box sets/movies) for £15 a month. Wi-Fi is still with them but that comes in at about £50, which is better than the £130 we’d got to with sky telly as well. You just have to be able to tolerate watching a few ads and not having recordings. More than anything I missed the TV guide!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2023 11:05

It would be so much cheaper to just have Internet only then pay for subs to Netflix, DisneyPlus etc. Then just watch free apps like BBC iPlayer and 4od etc.

SleeplessinScarbourough · 16/06/2023 11:06

My DM rang Sky last month to cancel because she was paying a ridiculous amount too and they magically produced an offer of £5 a month, no contract.
She still cancelled because she wanted freeview style - but it’s worth ringing or online chatting and seeing if they can wiggle for you!

Sennenandolive · 16/06/2023 11:21

I've signed up to sky stream, and pay £31 a month for that - thats for the entertainment, Netflix, and an additional box.

I have BT separately and pay £27 a month for the fibre wifi, speeds are really good.

I pay for Now TV movies separately at 9.99 and Disney is £6.99.

I think there is a £6 boost for HD payment somewhere as well - brings it to £81.

It probably would be cheaper if you sourced the bits you need elsewhere rather than just from Sky. We got rid of the kids sub, as there is so much on Netflix, Disney and Iplayer that we didn't feel it warranted it.

MintsPi · 16/06/2023 11:39

We have recently left Sky after 15 years as they wouldn't offer us a better deal. We are now with BT and pay £105 a month for the entertainment pack, Sky Sports and BT Sport in HD. Sky Cinema in HD, Netflix and broadband. Sky wanted £15 more without BT Sports or the Cinema pack.

They definitely take long time customers for granted and now it seems to get a good deal you actually have to lose your services before you will be offered one now.

Overthebow · 16/06/2023 11:44

Wow £100 a month for Sky? Very glad we don’t have it.

3luckystars · 16/06/2023 11:45

Could you get rid of multi screen and movies?
that would bring the bill down.
you could get a Roku box in Argos for the second TV and see how you get on with that.

wait until there is an offer on the movies before Christmas and you could get them again then for 3 months. Year round movies is not really necessary if you have Netflix etc.

I think that’s a lot, that’s just for tv and broadband?
or do you have a Sky landline phone also included in the £110?

fyn · 16/06/2023 11:49

We pay £80 but that includes Paramount, Netflix and Apple plus the internet and movies. If you split out the internet and all the streaming services separately you aren’t much under £80!

DuvetCoverNightmare · 16/06/2023 11:52

We’ve got sky stream and Netflix currently paying £29 a month on a rolling contract.

Internet is via EE for about £30 a month.

The sports is the expensive bit, about £30 a month

johnnydeppsslipper · 16/06/2023 11:55

Now tv movies entertainment and boost so 5 devices at a time can use is £18 a month Netflix £15 sky phone and fibre optic broadband is £31 a month so £64

gogohmm · 16/06/2023 11:57

I'm paying £52 for sky including Netflix but not movies or sports, try negotiating

BarbaraofSeville · 16/06/2023 11:59

You can get a very similar offering to Sky from Now TV for a fraction of that. It's also a monthly contract so you can pick and choose - we rotate round all the different streaming platforms and only ever pay for one at a time as we'd never watch enough to justify all the platforms all the time.

You just have to be a bit strategic - if there's something you want to watch, pay for one service and concentrate on watching what you're interested in and when you're bored of it, or want to watch something on another service, just switch. You can do it all online. Now TV also has good offers if you try and cancel. We've had it on and off for years and have never paid more than half the full price.

For broadband, we just sign up to a discounted introductory contract, which often comes with something like an Amazon voucher and when the contract is up, call them and ask for a discount to stay and if they don't offer something at or near the new customer offers then cancel and sign up with someone else.

ksjsb · 16/06/2023 11:59

We pay £107 for the all the packages including movies, sports, HD, internet etc, also multi room. But our contract ends in a few months so assuming it will go up a lot then as we have "deals", I HATE the stressful end of contract dance with sky. With Mercedes performing how they are this year though we'll likely sack off sky sports which will help.

cupofdecaf · 16/06/2023 12:01

We're getting rid of sky when the contract ends. We currently get tv and broadband for £55 a month and that feels too much. We're going to keep Disney and Netflix and shop around for broadband.
We're not on the top package. Perhaps think about what you will actually use and see if they can limit it to that?

IhateJan22 · 16/06/2023 12:02

I pay £40 a month, internet, phone line, TV basic package and Netflix. I always just pay for a film on the store if there is something I want to watch.

This. I do Disney plus during the holidays for a month. Now tv for a month when I want to watch stuff. I pay bt for basic internet.

user1471538283 · 16/06/2023 12:08

Try and push back - tell them you are going elsewhere and I bet they will reduce it.

You might want to revisit what you have though. I have Sky broadband (although they keep on about me having everything) which is £30 and then Netflix at £10. It is more than enough to pay.

JandalsAlways · 16/06/2023 12:14

Absolutely hate sky, they have the worst customer service I have ever expected. Will be cancelling this week!

faw2009 · 16/06/2023 12:20

Check out the latest deals that match what you have and phone up and say you want that deal. Or you're walking.

We're out of contract so need to renegotiate. I also hate dealing with them as it takes about 2 hours to get everything done.

Hotandverybothered · 16/06/2023 12:26

I got my son who is tech savvy and understands all the choices to renegotiate. Now package reduced from £85 to just under £50 . He was very persistent and sky caved in ! Inc Netflix ,Sport etc !

mumda · 16/06/2023 12:29

Is my bill fair website will tell you!

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 16/06/2023 12:31

I hate Sky with an irrational passion. I had a note on my phone is April, cancel Sky rob dog bastards.
So I did. Very liberating. I have dozens of messages, practically offering it for free but I will not be swayed.
Just downloaded various apps on the TV. We have netflix and Disney plus ar the moment.
Works for me.

scorpiogirly · 16/06/2023 13:02

This happened to me.

I had superfast bb. Tv with kids and an extra box upstairs. No movies or sports. Bill went up to 111. I started cancellation process as this usually works. This time it didn't. The lowest they would do was 89. So I let it cancel and went with virgin. Bb is faster. Have all the channels apart from movies and sports and got it for 49.50 a month.
