Crater-like wound on my leg turning black - what the hell is this (see pic)

Just as the title suggests! I got bitten last week, have no idea by what but it was itchy and the first day my leg was swollen and quite hard. Well now it’s turned into a small crater-like wound that feels really deep. It looks like a dark brown/black scab on it but I’ve tried lifting it a little and it’s like stuck in my leg, it looks hard but I’m sure it’s not actually a scab. When I tried to lift it (unsuccessfully) the skin around the wound peeled off. I have never had a bite end up like this! Any thoughts on what this is and whether it’s something that’ll heal on its own? Don’t want to bother the GP if it’s nothing!

Excuse the hairy legs and tattoo :D

Yes I have been feeling unwell the past two days but I just thought it was the heat. Very tired and feeling like I’ve got a cold coming on

That combined with an insect bite needs medical attention. Possible you hade a tick, scratched and knocked the body off.

GhostFaen · 15/06/2023 08:11

I wonder if it could be a false widow spider bite? They’re usually comparable to a bee or wasp sting, but can very occasionally be worse. Did you feel the bite when it happened?

moose62 · 15/06/2023 08:12

I had something that looked a bit like that a few years ago. My GP put it down to a spider bite!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 15/06/2023 08:19

I hope you have gone to hospital. Sepsis can kill you quickly; my dad died of it.

Snippit · 15/06/2023 08:39

Ticks don’t usually cause this much damage. Ask your local pharmacist for advice, they’re as good as your G.P, they may advise A&E.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/06/2023 08:43

It reminds me of a couple of bites I had 30 odd years ago, one on each hand. They looked like cigarette burns. When my hands get tanned you can still see the scars, they went so deep.

Good luck OP

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/06/2023 08:45

FGS get yourself to A&E asap!!

MondaysNewName · 15/06/2023 08:48

I'd have to dissect that with tweezers 🙈

determinedtomakethiswork · 15/06/2023 08:56

Can you go to the autism assessment and then immediately to A&E or your gp?

Bassetlover · 15/06/2023 08:57

Advice from a nurse- go to A&E asap!

JusthereforXmas · 15/06/2023 08:58

I would suggest getting it checked out, if nothing else to rule out things like sepsis/infection etc... if the bite is getting deeper.

I think I got bit by something on holiday last year on my hand, must have happened during the night and I felt nothing at all but developed circular 'brusing'. We where on holiday in the highlands so couldn't just pop to the doctors. It was really strange but nothing came of it and it was fading by the time we got home a week later.

My brother got bit by a mosquito once though and developed a Staff infection which spread and all the skin peeled off his leg so if any worries or if anything is getting 'worse' it always best to get it checked.

Outofthepark · 15/06/2023 09:00

Good lord OP get yourself to the hospital bloody immediately can't believe you are questioning it!!!

Newcareer2023 · 15/06/2023 09:04

Could have been a horsefly bite they are nasty and my wounds from these always end up needing either topical or oral antibiotics.

TheInterceptor · 15/06/2023 09:16

PSA for late joiners: The skin discolouration is a tattoo!

DominoRules · 15/06/2023 09:25

Hope you’re ok OP and get some medical advice and treatment today. I have had similar which was put down to a spider bite - it made a bit of a crater type wound on my foot and I had antibiotics and it dressed for a while. It took a long time to fully heel but now I just have a small scar

Bramshott · 15/06/2023 09:26

Hope you can get it sorted OP. TBH your description of "it looks like a scab but only part of it lifts off and it seems like it's stuck in my skin" sound very like a tick to me and it's definitely tick season (I've already taken one of the buggers out of my armpit this week).

HelpMeUnpickThis · 15/06/2023 09:26

YAB VERY unreasonable for going to get that looked at by the GP asap!

Ticks attach themselves, so are proud of the skin surface and then get bigger and more raised as they consume blood. They aren't crater or scab like. After a tick has been removed the bite mark itself is small.

Franseen · 15/06/2023 09:39

I had very similar, it was a spider bite

Mummumgem · 15/06/2023 09:40

I wouldn’t hesitate. Doctor today

Voerendaal · 15/06/2023 08:07

Please go to hospital and get that checked. With you not feeling well that is a red flag for sepsis. Please stop reading mumsnet and go. For what it is worth I am an icu nurse with 35 years experience. I haven’t read the whole thread as I did not want to waste your time.

Even though it's only the small puncture with red rim that we are looking at? All the grey/black skin is a faded tattoo.

NextTimeItsOver · 15/06/2023 09:44

I think you need to see a tattooist too 🫤

seriously though, I hope that your kids appointment goes well and that you get your wound sorted too.

lovescats3 · 15/06/2023 09:55

Go to a and e with that it needs immediate medical attention

Blossomtoes · 15/06/2023 10:09

Looks like you need antibiotics.

Barney60 · 15/06/2023 10:12

Agree with previous, looks like a tick bite, get yourself to A and E, they will remove the tick and give you antibiotics. ASAP.
