Crater-like wound on my leg turning black - what the hell is this (see pic)

Just as the title suggests! I got bitten last week, have no idea by what but it was itchy and the first day my leg was swollen and quite hard. Well now it’s turned into a small crater-like wound that feels really deep. It looks like a dark brown/black scab on it but I’ve tried lifting it a little and it’s like stuck in my leg, it looks hard but I’m sure it’s not actually a scab. When I tried to lift it (unsuccessfully) the skin around the wound peeled off. I have never had a bite end up like this! Any thoughts on what this is and whether it’s something that’ll heal on its own? Don’t want to bother the GP if it’s nothing!

Excuse the hairy legs and tattoo :D

Looks like a necrotic ulcer to me. That's really serious OP.
I'd ask for a nurse appointment tomorrow but A&E if you can't get one

You need to answer the question about whether all of the black marks are tattoo or not. Then people can modify their answers accordingly. It's impossible to tell what is discoloured skin and what is light/faded tattoo.

OP has made it quite clear. You can see what is tattoo and what is wound. The other symptoms plus this wound warrant a trip to A&E now.

chickendippersoverhead · 15/06/2023 00:16

Looking at the second photo you sent where you said "this image is a bit clearer" - going ONLY off this photo I'd say it looks nasty but not gangrenous or anything, contrary to almost everyone else, as the grey / black around it is a tattoo. The actual wound to me looks like it has that dark blood that can almost look black. It does look quite deep so nasty whatever it is.

However when you add in all of your other symptoms I'd be calling at 8am for a doctors appointment. If any of your symptoms worsen in the meantime then A&E.

Hotandverybothered · 15/06/2023 00:21

As long as you are not pyrexial..high temperature I would just make urgent appointment to see GP in the morning.Looks like a necrotic ulcer .

MerryHen · 15/06/2023 00:24

Hi OP,

I can't comment on the bite but please do see someone about the blood in your stools if this is a new symptom, it could mean your IBD management needs tweaking but also worth ruling out anything else causing it

Helena189 · 15/06/2023 00:28

Could it be a botfly?

poetryandwine · 15/06/2023 00:30

The bite itself is plenty nasty, OP. Two possibilities are that it is a spider bite making you ill or an infected horsefly bite. Both are serious. Please call 111 again in the early
morning.

I know how important and hard to get the autism assessment is, so unless 111 says it is life or death realistically I wouldn’t miss that. But I would go straight for medical help afterwards, with DP and DC in the car. DP can sort DC once you are being seen.

ffsgiveitarest · 15/06/2023 00:32

Please go to a&e or at lest call nhs 111

ffsgiveitarest · 15/06/2023 00:37

ah, I can see you’ve called NHS 111 I’d go to A&E.

IHateLegDay · 15/06/2023 00:38

Thought the tattoo was necrotic tissue at first and felt genuinely terrified for you 🙈
That bite looks nasty! Is there any way you can get up to the hospital and your DH can take your DS to his assessment tomorrow?

Ellie450 · 15/06/2023 00:43

Whether you go or not is up to you. I’ve had this before and removed the scab/indent, which opened it up and allowed it to drain and get air. I cleaned it out thoroughly with disinfectant and kept it clean and open. After I opened it the swelling/redness/pain improved rapidly.

Tilllly · 15/06/2023 00:01

If you felt well, I'd say leave it till morning
But feeling unwell, plus the bloody stools - I would get DH to drop you at A&E. Get a taxi home and if you're not back in time, he can take your son to his appointment

Whatever that is, is going deeper into your skin, not out, from the looks of it. I wouldn't leave it festering another 12 hours

The autism assessors need the primary carer at the assessment appointment. Even when assessing an adult, they want your childhood primary carer there if possible.

Willmafrockfit · 15/06/2023 00:45

if you dont want to go tonight, why dont you go tomorrow after the assessment.

Scrumbleton · 15/06/2023 00:47

I also think spider bite - had something v similar. I needed antibiotics and it took a year to heal properly ( it was so deep) still bear the scar 14 years on

oakleaffy · 15/06/2023 00:49

ToBeOrNotToBee · 14/06/2023 23:19

Ignore. I thought the black was veins and sepsis rather than tattoo.

I thought that was necrotic skin...it's a tattoo???

It looks like an embedded tick - but as you can tell..I'm no medic.

Have removed ticks from animals before, and they do feel hard sometimes.

lemonchiffonpie · 15/06/2023 00:52

It's not a fecking tick. It is a wound, from an insect bite.

Do not pick the "scab" and do see a doctor, as you probably need antibiotics.

Sarahtm35 · 15/06/2023 00:53

I’m not suggesting leaving it but I had a spider bite years ago that developed a crater the size of a 10p piece and I just left it to heal and was fine. I’m a gambler though so perhaps get it looked at after the assessment.

SlipSlidinAway · 15/06/2023 00:56

Can't believe how many people are saying tick! Looks nothing like.

Neverhot · 15/06/2023 01:07

I had a spider bite several years ago that looked exactly like this op. I'd still get it checked out ASAP as your other symptoms sound very concerning.

Hawkins0001 · 15/06/2023 01:08

Looks like an injury of some type and starting to scab over, @Bitworriedtbh

HotelWoes · 15/06/2023 01:09

I had a very similar crater type thing on my leg recently which I assume was caused by a bite. It has taken ages to heal. Only thing that sorted it in the end was medical grace manuka honey with a dressing on top. Never occurred to me to go to see a doctor 🤣 (mind you that’s like the quest for the holy grail). I wasn’t feeling ill with it though so probably in your case would be worth getting checked out.

kittensinthekitchen · 15/06/2023 01:11

This thread is fucking hilarious 😂

OhcantthInkofaname · 15/06/2023 01:13

Black means its necrotic. It needs urgent medical attention.

Friend did similar as it started to eat the skin around it before trying this treatment method
