To wash all new clothes?

So many divided opinions on this! So it’s all in the title- AIBU to wash all new clothes? For adults, not babies! I have a pile of new holiday clothes and plan on washing all before packing case. Was talking to someone who said no way- total waste of time; she just chucks them in!

Never crossed my mind to do this.

I think I may have done when expecting the DCs. And no idea why tbh.

CurlewKate · 14/06/2023 20:40

@OrwellianTimes How are you confident that happened?

Aitchoo · 14/06/2023 20:43

Just before covid I used to visit clothes manufacturing sites globally and look at H&S wrt chemical use and exposure.

In an ideal world I would say absolutely, as it would drastically reduce any exposure that could be in touch with your skin.

In reality I say to just wash the clothes that come into direct contact with your skin.

Clothes factories aren't the most hygienic and clean places, and that's before they are shipped out to warehouses for distribution and get placed on the shop floor for different shoppers to touch, try on and take home.

We once got bitten badly by what I assume were bed bugs or something similar after DH put new pjs on straight from the plastic packaging. We had to fumigate everything. I religiously washed anything new after that. Not so much these days, I intermittently wash. Always wash one DDs clothes though as she has bad eczema. Bedding and towels I always wash too.

Aslanplustwo · 14/06/2023 21:01

I've never done this in my life, totally unnecessary.

WonderingWanda · 14/06/2023 21:05

This is one of the most insane things I've ever heard of.

No I have never washed new clothes. I'm not going to eat them, just wear them.

Frabbits · 14/06/2023 21:06

wildfirewonder · 14/06/2023 20:13

Oh Biscuit.

It is a bloody miniscule difference. I haven't flown for over 20 years and got rid of my car more than 5 years ago. I barely buy anything new anyway.

My halo is polished enough, thanks. Go and preach to someone else. I'm willing to bet my energy and water usage is at least as good as yours.

Still doesn't change the fact that washing brand new clothes is a complete waste of resources.

25sheets · 14/06/2023 21:13

I'd wash underwear and swimsuits but not the rest.

I always wash new bedding and towels (but I know some people don't)

Kassalah · 14/06/2023 21:15

No I don't wash new clothes - part of the thrill is wearing them brand new.

Corcory · 14/06/2023 21:18

Never done it, never will. I worked in retail management for many years in ladies fashion. Sounds like far too much work to me.

GirloutofAfrica · 14/06/2023 21:20

That takes away the newness! Then you have to iron😔

FloofCloud · 14/06/2023 21:21

Sod that! I never wash first as they look best at purchase!

tracylamont13 · 14/06/2023 21:22

I've never washed new clothes. Hasn't ever occurred to me.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 14/06/2023 21:23

I don’t, but think we probably should after reading a really shocking article about the illegal pesticides sometimes used in cotton-growing. Whole communities getting ill from contact with these chemicals.

Myfavouritepenguin · 14/06/2023 21:36

Not really buying the “I caught lice/scabies/ringworm/bubonic plague from unwashed clothes” 😂 How do you know? Did you send the suspect clothes to a lab to check?

Onlinetherapist · 14/06/2023 21:39

Absolutely, your new clothes would have been tried on by countless others! Not everyone has a good standard of personal hygiene unfortunately..

NameChangeSorryNotSorry · 14/06/2023 21:44

I’ve never washed new clothes. I never washed baby clothes first either- so often things didn’t fit DC/we ended up with too many in one size and exchanged them etc it would have wasted so much money! Both kids and me have survived. Life is too short…

PonkyPonky · 14/06/2023 21:56

Yes absolutely wash everything. It’s gives me the heebie jeebies to think about putting new clothes on without washing the new off first

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 14/06/2023 21:56

I didn’t used to but I came out in a rash from a new bright red dressing gown so I tend to these days.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 14/06/2023 21:58

I always wash everything new that I buy for me or the kids but I used to work in a retail clothing shop and I have how clothes can be treated

thecatsmeows · 14/06/2023 22:00

I've always washed new clothes and bedding. My mother used to throw a fit if we didn't when I was living at home. I just think they feel better when washed.

CurlewKate · 14/06/2023 16:50

@AnIntrovert "I will wash cheaper brands such as Zara. Definitely not wash anything bought in a boutique. Except jeans"

Not sure where to start with this one!

Same curlewkate. Read through to see if anyone else thought the same 😆

TrueScrumptious · 14/06/2023 22:05

No, I’ve never done it and it’s never occurred to me to even think about doing it.

76evie · 14/06/2023 22:22

I washed all new clothes for my children when they were babies. Aside from that the only new thing I wash is underwear.

Anskl · 14/06/2023 22:38

My mum always did this.
What a waste of time.
