AIBU to think Radio 1 is too risqué and inappropriate innuendo?

On the way to school this morning:
"My nickname was Master Baker" then read out a message from a listener who said that when their grandma had said that her own grandfather had been a master baker they all fell about laughing and she couldn't understand the joke.

This afternoon on the ten minute drive home:
References to BDSM;

I wasn't waving his pole I was waving an actual pole; a window cleaner caught me naked;

"when he was in year 10 a window cleaner caught my friend well you know" "just so listeners know he's making the hand gesture." "Yes well the window cleaner court and doing that and when I said it in my best man speech his mum was not too pleased about it."

And a couple of other things all in ten minutes.

The programs which side with school runs especially it just seems really inappropriate. Yes of course you can always switch stations, but that's not the point the question is am I being a prude or is that an acceptable way to talk on the radio when all ages will be listening?

It's like they're trying too hard to get the 20 something crowd listening or something like that.

I like the music but turn over on the talking. I did enjoy Radio 1 in my early 20s though so maybe they just don't care about those doing the school run. I agree BBC radio should keep it clean in daytime hours- is there not some sort of radio watershed. It would put me off having it on in the car when the dc are there which is basically most of my car journeys.

Sux2buthen · 13/06/2023 16:38

Not everything is for kids. I'd just listen to something else

boysmuminherts · 13/06/2023 16:38

I love Vick and Jordan. It was really funny this afternoon!! Well they are always funny. Greg James is brilliant. My youngest loves him. "he's really good at radio" is what he actually said!!

It seems like as long as they don't actually say swear words they try to get away with as much as they can.

I've emailed once to complain, but I'm not going to keep emailing.

How old is your DS?

So the story about Vicky being caught naked, and the masturbation story were funny to you too, in the car with your child? BDSM gear, waving Jordan's pole. You laughed too? I only got ten minutes of it. I'm sure there was more.

Clearly you don't remember Terry Wogans Janet and John stories on Radio 2 back in the day.

My mum would be doubled over in stitches and I'd have no idea why.

It's pretty tame OP. Hardly post watershed content.

brunettemic · 13/06/2023 16:42

You’ve got to understand who their target audience is though. It’s not going kids and it’s not people like me (early 40s, although I have friends who listen to Radio 1). When Chris Moyles left for example they wanted to boost their figures in the demographic they target, knowing overall volumes would drop. The content you refer to is aimed at a particular audience.

So the station with the pop music is not for under 18s?

Which one is then, of the licence fee stations?

he is in Y7, he doesn't understand the jokes!! Well he understands being caught naked, but not the rest!

TheLeadbetterLife · 13/06/2023 16:45

Radio 1 has always been like that, and it is aimed at teens and early 20s.

and there is no watershed on the radio FYI.

yes, their target demographic is 15-29 year olds

It's not CBeebies.

Most pop music is about sex, so yeah, radio 1 is probably not arsed about appealing to 11 year olds.

Peakypolly · 13/06/2023 16:49

I think Radio 2 is more family friendly- Jeremy Vine always warns if adult content is due to happen.
My friend who is a dentist has said she has had to stop listening to Radio 1 in the treatment room as she gets embarrassed in front of service users sometimes.

I think Classic FM or Radio 4 might be more your speed.

INamechangedForThisMadness · 13/06/2023 16:49

Radio 6music: better music, better commentary (mostly).

I am definitely at the age where radio 1 all sounds the same. My younger lift sharer does not agree! 😂

INamechangedForThisMadness · 13/06/2023 16:50

(But death before radio 2 😆)

if they're going to complain about R1's content, yes.

Yes! The lyrics are stuffed full of innuendos and blatant references.

Radio 2 is full of 90s now. My DD and I listen to Sara Cox on the way to sports practice.

If they're upset by the content of Radio 1 then it would seem prudent.

Briandouglas · 13/06/2023 17:03

Well classic fm does the school run bit everyday from 8:00 playing film themes and other classical that appeals to kids so I’d say yes

HighlandCowbag · 13/06/2023 17:03

I remember R1 in the late 90s/early 00s. You could always tell when Sara Cox or Zoe Ball had been out raving all weekend, loads if reference to drugs etc. It's not a childrens show, you can always change channel. Some of the news coverage for instance I wouldn't want my 9 year old to listen to, tho there is always a content warning.
