AIBU to think Radio 1 is too risqué and inappropriate innuendo?

On the way to school this morning:
"My nickname was Master Baker" then read out a message from a listener who said that when their grandma had said that her own grandfather had been a master baker they all fell about laughing and she couldn't understand the joke.

This afternoon on the ten minute drive home:
References to BDSM;

I wasn't waving his pole I was waving an actual pole; a window cleaner caught me naked;

"when he was in year 10 a window cleaner caught my friend well you know" "just so listeners know he's making the hand gesture." "Yes well the window cleaner court and doing that and when I said it in my best man speech his mum was not too pleased about it."

And a couple of other things all in ten minutes.

The programs which side with school runs especially it just seems really inappropriate. Yes of course you can always switch stations, but that's not the point the question is am I being a prude or is that an acceptable way to talk on the radio when all ages will be listening?

It's like they're trying too hard to get the 20 something crowd listening or something like that.

Not everything is for kids. I'd just listen to something else

Exactly.
It's a radio station aimed at young people/adults,not the radio equivalent of CBeebies.

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 13/06/2023 17:58

Sounds about as innuendo as Panto tbh

So people on the school run should listen to classic FM or radio 4?

I don't understand what you would like the outcome to be? Either listen to radio one and accept it is a bit risqué sometimes, or listen to a different station on the school run. Radio one cannot change the entirety of their content because of 10 mins each morning and afternoon during the school run.

The stance they will take, is it is you as a parents responsibility to decide if it appropriate for your particular child, and if not then turn over.

It seems like as long as they don't actually say swear words they try to get away with as much as they can.

I've emailed once to complain, but I'm not going to keep emailing.

That's kind of the point of radio one.

I always wondered who complained about this stuff!

Try radio 2

I don't like the music on radio one but I do like Jordan and listen to his podcast with William Hanson.

narrichi · 13/06/2023 18:09

I remember Innuendo Bingo being a thing on Radio 1 about fifteen years ago. Has it ever been squeaky-clean and suitable for young children? Most pop songs are about sex anyway.

I'm from the Mark & Lard era of Radio 1.

I don't know how they got away with "Missing Words".

Their version of Money's Too Tight to Mention still kills me now 😂

Oh god, sometimes I scour YouTube for 90s Mark & Lard uploads and spend a few hours just crying with laughter.

"IS IT WORTH OWT?"
"could you back off the mic a bit...?"

Have listened to radio 4. The archers were talking about shagging 20 years ago. Shit, bollocks, piss all used regularly. Women's hour can be quite explicit.

I agree...Most pop records when they were actually records were bought by the under 10s. I doubt things have changed given the predominant chart entries by pop idol, bgt, lad baby, boy bands of limited talent and the lack of success in charts charts by some of the big stars who release records with lots of push behind them...I thinking cliff in particular

Wut.

The only record I bought before secondary school was by Timmy Mallet. Chart pop music is not aimed at the under-10s.

Every station run by Auntie has and always had a key demographic:
Radio 1 Your average 14-30 year old that’s into trends and pop culture
1Xtra- Young Black People
Radio 2- Middle class families and Over 60s
Radio 3- ‘Arty Farty’ type (particularly classically trained Musicians)
Radio 4- Russell group Students, the politically interest, Thespians
Radio 5 Live- Sport fans (also previously Film fans: Kermode and Mayo used to be one of BBC radios most successful programs, before they went to Sony).
Local Federals- Over 60s

Obviously, there will be exceptions to all of these and a lot of adults will fit into multiple of these demographics, but the average listener will generally be part of the attracted demographics.

I was going to say Mark and Lard was essentially 2 hours of innuendo a day.

And it was brilliant.

ThanksItHasPockets · 13/06/2023 18:28

Radio 1 is aimed at 15-29 year olds. For family listening I think Radio 2 would be more suited to your expectations. They still play some pop.

Jwhb · 13/06/2023 18:30

Radio 4 one afternoon in the 90s taught me the phrase "Can I pee in your sink?" I knew it was something risque because my mum immediately turned off the radio. It was probably ten years before I found out what it actually meant 😂

Radio has no watershed. But if you don't make a big deal, your kids probably won't even notice, until they're ready to notice.

UnexpectedDaisy · 13/06/2023 18:31

I have to admit I did a double take this afternoon when I got in the car and they were talking about gimp masks and sex toys...

BarelyLiterate · 13/06/2023 17:28

R1 has always been puerile. One of the main shows even had a long-running feature called ‘innuendo bingo’, FFS. The only difference is that you’re getting older, OP, & growing out of it. Perfectly normal. Happens to us all.

Thank god it hasn't happened to me. How dull life would be

I loved innuendo bingo. Made me snort with laughter regularly.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 13/06/2023 18:41

I’ve never forgotten when Francine Stock said the C-word on ‘Front Row’ on Radio 4. The Home Counties had a fit of the vapours.

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard as I did on the day that they did Meatloaf’s You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth.

‘you took the cock-a-leekie soup right out of my mouth…’

ThanksItHasPockets · 13/06/2023 18:46

PS there is no watershed on the radio. You even get the odd ‘fuck’ in the Afternoon Play on R4.

newtb · 13/06/2023 18:48

Back in the day on radio 4 programmes like Round the Horne and the Navy Lark were bordering on obscene. Could never understand why my df was laughing as 10 yr old me didn't see the joke. Older me did.
Maybe they need to make it less obvious.

That's part of it. It's just so crude, not subtle or clever at all.

So the station with the pop music is not for under 18s?

Which one is then, of the licence fee stations?

Radio 1 is a youth station but it’s aimed at older teens upwards who listen on their own, not with their parents.

The family-oriented station is Radio 2, which is why they do things like the 500 Words short story competition.

This reminds me of the bit of this Mickey Flanagan sketch where he talks about listening to the radio:

Mummysaf · 13/06/2023 21:09

I think you need to listen to something else OP

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 13/06/2023 22:06

Anyone else thinking of Monty Python
"You can't say whizzing noise on the radio. Nor ting nor whistle nor puking noise"

Nelly91 · 13/06/2023 22:16

I was listening to this master Baker stuff and for the life of me could not work out the joke. Having a penny drop moment reading this thread! No fear if a sleep deprived mum couldn't crack the joke I doubt your kids could. Maybe stick heart fm on in the future?
