Working for 9 hours just twice a week with hour commute there and back.

No, I would not do that .

I did for a time, work in a nursery open from 7.30-6pm.

Staff start times were all staggered, some staff there for opening 7.30, more arrive at 8.30, then 9.30 and 10am. Staff go home 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 6.30.

No way wouid I do 8-6 in a nursery with 2 hours commute on top.

Ugh this. I usually started at 8:30 on paper, but was always called into a room the moment I got there (usually 15 minutes early), and never, ever went home on time. Usually was there until close at 6. That's day nurseries. Absolutely exploit their staff./

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2023 23:11

Presumably she knew how long the commute was before she applied though! Lots of you saying you wouldn’t do that commute for those 2 long days, if you did 3 days you’d be spending even longer commuting for the same pay.
I mean, I absolutely wouldn’t be commuting for those wages either but then I most certainly wouldn’t be applying.
Quite a few of our local schools have several vacancies for school support staff, formerly a desirable role for the school hours and term time working but people can no longer afford to do these jobs as the pay is just too low for it to be compatible with raising a family or even just living alone.

We can't recruit for love nor money.

Well you say that, but have you actually considered offering a higher hourly rate?

Maybe they can only do short days for other reasons, for example maybe they have pets, elderly parents, grandchildren, study commitments, a sick partner etc.

Redebs · 12/06/2023 23:19

Having read some of your other threads OP, I can see there might be more to it than just the low pay.
Perhaps consider how you treat other people - neighbours, nanny, colleagues 🤔

This might seem harsh, but I think a bit of self-reflection might be called for if you want to get people willing to work for you.

Better than coming onto the internet to complain about them as if it's their fault in some way.

OP wants them to be on zero-hours too

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2023 23:22

@Newname211 yes definitely, I didn’t put it in my post because it wouldn’t have just gotten longer but there will of course be unlimited amounts of reasons why people wouldn’t want to or be able to work longer days and would prefer more but shorter shifts.

You keep repeating that you pay well but there's obviously something off-putting to applicants if they keep turning down the job. This is at least the second time you've posted about this so you must know whatever you're doing or offering is just not working. You come across as quite passive aggressive, the way you keep insisting that it's a good job offer and that people should be expecting to work long hours, accept a two hour commute as standard etc. Maybe it's your demands and interviewing technique that's putting people off.

I knew the posting style seemed familiar.

kingtamponthefurred · 12/06/2023 23:27

I wouldn't get out of bed for that kind of money, even without a commute.

Hearti · 12/06/2023 23:29

An hour each way to too far to travel for such a low paid role.

Hearti · 12/06/2023 23:33

£13 per hour is low pay for an adult. If they were to walk it would be slightly bearable, however paying for buses or trains or car petrol/car upkeep makes it pointless

Hearti · 12/06/2023 23:39

Ugh!! So the £13 actually includes a little bit of holiday pay entitlement because it’s a zero hours contract. So it’s in effect £13 per hour and no holidays

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 12/06/2023 23:49

Why don't you change to early and late shifts? Spread the hours out over more days? Won't work for her with a Long commute but might for others
