‘I used to say awful things’: Alan Carr on divorce, dating and the skit that haunts him | Alan Carr | The Guardian

Idiot. There is so much to say about this - power, control and a total lack of understanding of allergies.

"We’re in a big echoing loft with wood floors and he’s talking to his team as if they are all on stage and I – sitting in the corner – am the audience. He wants to know why one of them is picking bits out of her salad. He doesn’t accept that she’s allergic to coriander. Whoever heard of being allergic to coriander?"

There are six of us in this photo studio, including Carr’s manager, makeup, wardrobe and a publicist from ITV. He picks up the coriander and stuffs it into the mouth of the woman who said she was allergic. “See!” he declares, triumphant. “You’re not really allergic. If you were, you’d be dead by now.” He cackles. Everyone else cackles. It’s like the canned laughter of witches"

I just don't know what to say about this. Some allergies are less well known but still cause allergic reactions. And should be taken seriously.

‘I used to say awful things’: Alan Carr on divorce, dating and the skit that haunts him

He’s the extrovert who used to pick on others for laughs. But after struggling in lockdown and a bruising separation, the comic insists he’s grown up – and is happier than ever

What is interesting is that so many people are taking what a journalist has written as absolute fact without hearing the other side of the story. And so the subject is vilified on the word of one person. We truly are in an age of trial by social media.

You don’t think journalists report facts, sub-editors double check, editors run anything whiffy past legal lest they get a libel suit on their hands?

It's so insane that anyone is defending him. Imagine if he'd been the author of the AIBU post.

"I shoved coriander into my employee's mouth because I don't think she's really allergic to it and now lots of people are saying I'm an abusive POS but I think I've totally reformed, AIBU?"

Doesnt surprise me. went to see him in his stand up show in london and He was shocking.so unfunny- nothing likeable about him and up to this point i believed his tv persona.

And even if someone just doesn't like something, and isn't allergic, shoving it into their mouth against their will is still absolutely fucking bizarre and unacceptable behaviour.

Absolutely agree, I forgot to say that in my post.

You're right that Tymon never gave an interview. His comments were reported in the press. https://www.pressreader.com/uk/sunday-mirror/20150315/281625303781331

He did fear for his job.

Tymon never said he feared for his job. "The source" said he did but the source also said he wasn't going to sue. Tymon went to his solicitor straight after the incident. Someone at the solicitors said Tymon feared for his job and mentions suing. Maybe I'm cynical but that points to Tymon setting up the back ground to suing. As in "it was even more traumatic because I feared for my job", which equals more money.
People who have been assaulted don't usually have a solicitor on speed dial who speaks to the press anonymously. People intending to sue do that. He's perfectly entitled to compensation. What happened to him was unacceptable. But the idea he was an insignificant dogsbody just keeping quiet so he didnt lose his job is nonsense. He was the producer of Top Gear, BBC's biggest earner. He got over a £100,000+ settlement. He got a promotion.

I have a DS who has allergies (some rarer than the well known ones) so it's made me really cross.

It's hard to get some people to take the lesser well known ones seriously.

If your DD were allergic to coriander, would she choose a salad with it in? My DD hates coriander - isn't allergic - but would not even touch a salad with it in because it’s impossible to guarantee every last piece has been removed. I mean, it’s not like being allergic to, say, eggs and taking a hard boiled egg off the top of a salad is it?

Heaven forbid that I take what someone says at face value. Hmm

DS doesn't eat salads so that's not a problem.

He is careful around what he eats - although it's a problem when somethings have generic labels such as "herbs, spices".

But you can see that some people on here would remove coriander if they had an allergy to it. And continue to eat from the food. That's their way of dealing with an allergy.

Each person finds their own way. I am sure they get used to people not believing their allergy but they don't expect others to try and shove food into their mouth that they say they are allergic to.

But he didnt say it. He's never said anything publicly.
If you believe his solicitor when he says Tymon was scared about losing his job, then you must believe the solicitor when he says Tymon wasn't going to sue. As it turned out be a lie that Tymon wasn't going to sue, then it's only natural that it would be a lie that he was scared about losing his job. Which let's not forget, not only did he not lose but he actually got a promotion.
Anyway, we're just going round in circles now so probably best not to keep going on about it. Neither of us will persuade the other to think differently. 🙂

@LimitIsUp how is it "clearly "?

Allergies differ in the seriousness of a reaction, what kind of contact is needed for a reaction, the form the allergen is in (raw, cooked etc. ) and so on.There is no clearly.

That is true. Nice to see a post with common sense.
