Angry I’ve been shamed on local FB group?

FrenchFancie · 10/06/2023 20:08

I’ve just moved to a new area - we’ve been here about two weeks and I’ve just joined the Facebook group for the estate. I had a quick scroll through and found a post from the day we moved in, showing my car (with registration!) and complaining I’d parked badly because there was a small gap between my wheels and the curb - apparently ‘everyone here parks on the kerb and who is this tw@t that doesn’t know it?’ The post admitted that I wasn’t causing an obstruction, but did highlight my bad parking.

the only reply was from someone saying ‘think it’s the new neighbours at X house’.

I’d parked slightly badly because, on my way to the house I’d been hit by another car (from the side, she pulled out of a junction into the main road and straight into me - so not my fault). I’d had to wait to exchange details etc etc and was late for the moving van so just pulled my car up sharpish.

i loved it about 4/5 hours later after the van was gone. It’s a quiet estate with a no through road, so it’s only local traffic.

I’m really cross this man chose to try and shame me in this way. AIBU to be angry and feel like we’ve got off on a really bad start to the new house? Why didn’t he just come and knock and ask me to move it, or just be patient and wait til our moving van had gone?

also - how should I reply? I’ve drafted a really curt response but don’t think this will mend fences, so sitting on it for now!

Pretty sure car registrations are not covered by data protection Confused

SideWonder · 10/06/2023 20:45

Ignore, ignore, ignore. And leave the FB group.

Fakeairpodsfakeoodie · 10/06/2023 20:50

Honestly I would probably park fully on the road from now on.

Jibo · 10/06/2023 20:52

I'd park on the road from now on, AND I'd find it which car belongs to the twat and report it every time you see it parked on the pavement.

Tigger1895 · 10/06/2023 20:53

If it helps, I despise people who park on the kerb, particularly if there’s a grass verge

Thepeopleversuswork · 10/06/2023 20:59

These sorts of local Facebook pages are known for their pettiness and small mindedness. These are people with far too much time on their hands.

You have nothing to gain by engaging and they will forget in a week or two.

Gracefully ignore them.

TooJoy · 10/06/2023 21:00

I would never to see the picture before I can say whether YABU or not.

It depends just how bad the parking was.

They do sound like a busy body though.

bladebladebla1 · 10/06/2023 21:00

God they'd hate me, I'm so shit at parking I can't get near the kerb and I've no idea why. I even look out my door and try and fix it and make it worse. But also, I thought parking on the kerb was a dick move anyway? Although I clearly know nothing about driving so I'm probably wrong

Gtsr443 · 10/06/2023 21:00

Look at it this way OP the local arsehole has just outed himself so you know who to avoid.

DyslexicPoster · 10/06/2023 21:02

Ignore and snooze the group for a month

Message the page admin saying that your vehicle reg and, thanks to the reply, home address are in the public domain thanks to this post and you require it to be removed thank you.

Don't reply and take yourself off the FB page. I have no idea if my area has a Facebook page because, if it does exist, I see no reason to look at it let alone join it.

This.

User1438423 · 10/06/2023 21:07

I would have to reply, but in a faux apologetic kill him with kindness way because it will REALLY show him up as the petty arsehole he is and get the others on your side. 'I'm so sorry for parking badly, I'd just been hit by another car on the way and was late for meeting my removal van. I re-parked the car once I realised. Apologies if this caused you any inconvenience that day, I feel terrible for upsetting a neighbour before we'd even moved in properly!'

Yes do this.

But also once you have done that, let it go, in the good old days they would have just slagged you off in person and you wouldn't have known.

No good ever comes of local FB groups, get off it and leave them to it.

Irridescantshimmmer · 10/06/2023 20:38

According to google, you can start civil proceedings, legal action because the plonker who posted your vehicles' reg without having the sense to pixellate the image first, has violated your data protection and your data can be stollen because its now public..

So the choice is yours, if you get free legal advice you may have a case.

What nonsense is this ? ‘Your’ reg plate is not considered personal data whatsoever honestly put down the google and relax

Americano75 · 10/06/2023 21:18

Every village needs an idiot, at least you know who yours is now. What a wank, report it to the group admin.

Wiccan · 10/06/2023 21:19

I absolutely hate local FB groups the people on them are so aggressive. Just full of people in the neighbourhood wanting to have a pop at eachother the only time they are civil is when an item is being given away free ! 🙄

LakeTiticaca · 10/06/2023 21:30

Congratulations and well done for sniffing out this weasels intentions!! Give yourself a bit pat on the back and a very large glass of vino 🥰

Sarahtm35 · 10/06/2023 21:49

That’s Facebook cnts for you. It’s why I never set foot on the site as it’s full to the brim with mega tats.

Didtheythough · 10/06/2023 21:53

Its been 2 weeks, anyone who cared at the time has long forgotten. If you reply you just draw attention back to it. Ignore.

Applecoresweet · 10/06/2023 21:55

Only an asshole takes pictures of small things others do to report online. He's made a show of himself, not you.

This 100%!

sonjadog · 10/06/2023 22:06

I think the rule for local facebook groups is that you never, ever comment. I have been on a few for areas I have lived in and they can be handy for local information, but in each group it has quickly become apparent who the local busybodies are and who is desperate for an online fight. So the rule is "read, don't comment".

Zonder · 10/06/2023 22:09

I would ignore it but stay in the group. I'm sure plenty of people think he's an idiot - in our local group there are regular complaints about parking on the pavement.

Stay though, it's always useful to know what's going on, I find.

Yfory · 10/06/2023 22:13

Just ignore it altogether. Anything you do will make it worse and draw further attention to you.
People online tend to have short memories and will quickly forget if you ignore it.
