Fish and chips too heavy. Pizza so expensive compared to £6 fancy supermarket pizza. Indian I’d rather have in a restaurant. DH prefers Chinese but he is wrong.

Who’s with me?

I am loving all the food threads as I sold my restaurant 3 months ago and moved abroad. If you want fresh donairs.. that you can have at home .. here is the recipe I have always used.
2lbs ground beef
3tsp cayenne pepper
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
2 tsp paprika
2 tsp ground dried oregeno.

shape into a loaf and wrap in cling film. put in fridge over night.
when ready to cook put oven to 350 degrees. when preheated put in oven and cook for forty min. let cool a bit.. then slice thin.

want the sweet sauce recipe? it is so very simple .. a can of condensed milk mix well with a half a cup of white sugar and a quarter cup of vinegar.. whisk well and put in fridge for a few hours

Kebab all the way (before I stopped eating meat)

Thornrose · 10/06/2023 02:15

I agree, a good shish is hard to beat. Other takeaways can be so bloody disappointing.

HappiDaze · 10/06/2023 02:16

I do love a decent Shish kebab or chicken schwarma. I have bought one in the UK for years

I did however on holiday to Greece have the most delicious Greek chicken shish type kebab on fresh billowy Greek kebab bread. It was utterly delicious.

I think I'll have to find a local Greek restaurant to test their versions out because I really want one

momager1 · 10/06/2023 02:18

omg..NOT condensed milk...evap milk. condensed with the sugar would be farrrrr to sweet

steff13 · 10/06/2023 02:22

Mexican

GarlicGrace · 10/06/2023 02:31

Only if it's a mixed shish [gavel]

Though I like your recipe, @momager1. It's quite a lot like like my "emergency meatloaf" recipe - can I make yours without the pre-planning required to put in the fridge overnight? Pleeeease?

ToeJammed · 10/06/2023 06:46

Kebabs in the UK are nowhere near as nice as in mainland Europe.
Cheap nasty meat in cheap pitta bread with some manky lettuce. Ugh.

momager1 · 10/06/2023 21:08

@GarlicGrace really needs to sit overnight for the spices to blend in properly. you can try without but the flavor profile will not be there. sorry :(

LaDamaDeElche · 10/06/2023 21:22

Kebabs are ok if you're pissed or hungover, otherwise a Chinese is so much better, or a pizza.

YouAndMeAndThem · 10/06/2023 21:26

Pizza - good but too expensive, can buy great supermarket pizzas

Chippy tea - the best but only if it's a good one, in the right circumstances, not one I'd chose regularly but thoroughly enjoy one when we get it.

Burgers - always sounds better than it actually is, prefer to sit in.

Kebab - proper Turkish shish kebab, pitta, good fresh salad, garlic sauce and chilli sauce, crispy chips - so good! Especially on a summer night when you Cba BBQing!

Indian - prefer to eat in, but good in a big group as takeaway

Chinese - could eat every day, no sweat. The overall winner.

YABVU.

There's an Indian restaurant near me that does a tikka wrap - chicken (or lamb) tikka in a naan bread with salad and mint yogurt. It is the best kebab style food when you're drunk.

Glitterybee · 10/06/2023 22:45

Your DH is correct, chinese takeaway is elite.

Also, you cannot compare shop bought pizza to takeaway pizza!

Donner meat grosses me out after a friend described it as eyebrows and arseholes.
I'm always iffy about ordering lamb after I watched a documentary where they dna tested loads of takeaways and none that said they were lamb actually were.

What was the meat that was pretending to be lamb?
