Prison sentences for violent crimes piss me off.

Ever notice how sentencing for acid attacks or domestic violence, rape, SA, child SA are absolutely piss poor.
Look at Charles Bronson or Robert Maudsley's sentencing, neither ever hurt a woman or child.
Colin Pitchfork/Paul Gadd (Gary Glitter) etc get let out to reoffend.
Even acid attacks and their horrific nature aren't given massive sentences from what I've seen?
My theory is because it doesn't really affect men.
I just find the prison sentencing in the UK to be a bad joke and I'm prepared here with my hard hat on to be told I'm unreasonable.
But with the rise of incels, violent porn, the Andrew Tate brigade etc, that times are just getting worse for women and children?

Completely agree with you. I'd like to see capital punishment brought back for the worst crimes.

I wouldn’t. It’s not a deterrent and just creates more victims.

Greenshake · 12/06/2023 11:13

@JustGeorgie you talk a lot of sense. It’s refreshing.

Thoughtful2355 · 12/06/2023 11:13

Yepp, I know someone who got more time for dealing drugs than someone who raped a toddler who died from the injuries

stbrandonsboat · 12/06/2023 11:15

There has recently been a case of two metal detectorists who were given five years for trying to sell some coins they found. Apparently anything worth £200 or over belongs to The Crown 🙄

Yeah look a bit further into those individuals....

The problem with the Death Penalty is that we would asking ordinary people to be complicit in the murder of another.

Ethically speaking, that's fucked up.

I mean, if you got the chance to put a knife in the person who was responsible for taking your child's life, great. There's a sort of "natural" justice in that. But paying someone just over minimum wage to forcibly strap a prisoner to a bed before execution is a whole lot different.

Imagine the conversation when they got home.

"Hi honey, dinners almost ready, how was work?"

" Oh it was an absolute nightmare today, we had another execution, another Get Tough on Crime things, anyway the guy just wouldn't die, we had to use three injections and a strap broke half way through"

"Oh wow, sounds rough, do you want gravy? Think we're almost out, but check the old Bisto tin behind the bread bin"

*"No, that's OK, just have some brown sauce, oh yeah, it was so funny, the guy on the table was trying to fight me as I tightened the straps again. You should have seen the look on his face, priceless, and the smell when he shit himself once we'd finally killed him!"

Anyway, enough about my day . ."*

It would just get very awkward and messy.

JustGeorgie · 12/06/2023 11:25

@onefinemess

Yep! That would be a likely scenario

Which brings me back to the cosy little world of mumsnet expecting others to actually do this as part of their job....

Or the silly little 'I would do or' replies

If somebody can’t see that raping his daughter and stepdaughter is wrong, even after they’ve been to prison for it, they are seriously beyond help.

I don’t know what kind of intervention you are imagining OP, but I don’t think anything exists that can make unrepentant paedophiles regret their actions and turn over a new leaf. I do agree they are very high risk for reoffending, and their probation conditions should reflect that (the probation service is extremely badly funded, as you probably know).

You can’t keep people locked up indefinitely though - even Charles Bronson would have been out years ago if he didn’t keep murdering and assaulting other people in prison.

Like the man in Scotland who raped the 13 year old girl and walk away with no prison time because he was under 25? I’m sure it will bring great comfort to the victim, to know that the man was under 25 so wasn’t really at fault. But then she doesn’t really matter does she, it’s all about what’s fair for the rapist. I’m sure it’s a great message to send men under 25 too, you all get one free rape of a woman or child, go at it lads 👍

Precisely the case I had in mind, and it took place in a jurisdiction that has dropped the voting age to 16.

I wouldn’t. It’s not a deterrent and just creates more victims.

0% reoffending rate though.

I think someone else here nailed it with prevention.
Anything else and honestly it's unlikely to work.
It's sad to come to that conclusion but it is what it is.
I'd just keep sex offenders and anyone who hurts kids away for good.
Wouldn't want to live in a society where we do have capital punishment, but equally, I don't want them on the streets.

I actually have worked with a few paedophiles in halfway houses or supported accommodation and these locations have all been very close proximity to schools.

It's fucked up.

Where's the proof of harsher sentences with all your links @Naunet

First is behind a paywall

The snarky comment about google was funny...

@scorpiogirly

Absolute rubbish! So flippant

You walk the landings then? And still have that opinion?

Hear, hear, @JustGeorgie . I suspect we have similar jobs.

Princessfuckingpeach · 15/06/2023 17:46

Today it's been announced that child rapist and killer Colin Pitchfork is to be released after returning to prison after his last release when he immediately broke the conditions of his parole.

Honestly hate the UK laws sometimes.
Hes a dangerous bastard and he'll abuse more kids, even if it's through accessing images, he's not going to ever be a non risk to children.

Absolute joke.
