To complain (work hotel stay)

lalalalalalaleeee · 09/06/2023 05:57

Am away with work, so staying in a budget hotel last night

Known to be a bit noisy as above a pub, right in the centre of the city..

However, my room is also clearly near a glass bottle recycling facility, where lorries tip their loads.... 7 times since midnight!!! I've not had a wink of sleep.... and that was after the drunk man serenading the hotel with a drum kit made out of paint cans!

You should be complaining to your employer, if they have booked you in a hotel above a pub it was hardly going to be tranquil and the hotel can't be responsible for drunk people making a noise.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/06/2023 06:02

I’d tell HR that I didn’t want to stay there in future and suggest they start putting staff up in another hotel because of the recycling facility noise. I can’t see what a complaint to the hotel would do: they can’t do anything about a drunk passer by or their location. They might offer your work some kind of partial money back gesture I suppose.

lalalalalalaleeee · 09/06/2023 06:06

The fact it's above a pub doesn't matter to me, in fact I didn't hear a thing from the pub at all, I am at the back of the hotel.

I've worked in hospitality for years (until covid) and sometimes hoteliers don't know the issues with a room as they don't sleep in them.

Drunk people don't bother me. The bottles clinking as they are topped off a lorry does

What would would you like the outcome of your complaint to be?

ProfessorXtra · 09/06/2023 06:13

They can’t change where the building is. Or the bottle plant.

If you stay there again, request a room at the front.

WaltzingWaters · 09/06/2023 06:16

I’d definitely request to the employer that no future work trips involve stay there due to the noise.

If it’s a budget place they probably know it’s potentially noisy and price accordingly. If not, let them know/leave a review.

Fleetheart · 09/06/2023 06:19

what hotel chain is it? Premier Inn have a good night guarantee. I agree you should definitely complain, if the bottle bank is keeping you awake it’s obviously far too noisy to have people in that room.

Hurrayforfridays · 09/06/2023 06:40

I'd complain to the hotel in morning. It's doesn't seem right that lorries are able to empty bottles through the night - the noise would be horrendous!

Kiwano · 09/06/2023 06:59

I think you can reasonably complain. If they have a room that is so noisy people can't sleep, they shouldn't be putting guests in it.

mrsbyers · 09/06/2023 07:04

I had this situation in a Premier Inn in Edinburgh and complained and they refunded no quibble

GoodChat · 09/06/2023 07:09

Did you book on expenses or did the company book?

Sigmama · 09/06/2023 07:24

That's really shit and yes I would complain, I've stayed in plenty of pub hotels without that kind of interruption

Roselilly36 · 09/06/2023 07:26

Yes I would complain too.

FlamingoQueen · 09/06/2023 07:34

Why don’t you just mention it to the hotel? Perhaps they don’t realise how loud it is.

notimagain · 09/06/2023 07:37

If your employer booked the hotel then you should complain to them in addition to complaining to the hotel...

Gizlotsmum · 09/06/2023 07:37

Def mention it to both the hotel and your employer.

cocksstrideintheevening · 09/06/2023 08:18

It's probably staff dumping bottles rather than lorries 7 times in a night. I wouldn't bother complaining but I wouldn't stay there again.

Panjandrum123 · 09/06/2023 08:28

Let the hotel know, they may already but if not get them to log it. If you’re staying another night can they move you to a different room? And let your employers know so they don’t book you or anyone else in to that hotel. I can sleep through a lot but glass recycling is an unusual sound so breaks through.

We had a list of hotels at my workplace - if colleagues were coming to our site, we’d always let them know which hotels to avoid for noise and other issues.

If the employer chooses the hotel ( I worked in such an industry) then the OP may have no choice….

The best option if that is the case is to complain to the hotel and then the employer - where I worked the employer wouldn’t consider any complaint if the hotel had no record of a complaint from you during your stay.

If the noise is a frequent and known issue (which seems might be the case from the OP’s comments) it might help if there were multiple complaints from multiple employees.

No, but maybe they can consider triple glazing for the rooms that face it?

I wouldn't 'complain' as such, but I would tell HR it's not a suitable place to stay for this reason, and I would also let Reception know that the noise is very loud as well, not in a 'I want my money back' kind of way, more in a 'just in case you're not aware' kind of way.

lalalalalalaleeee · 09/06/2023 16:27

Thanks all

We use a central booking agent. We tell them where we need to stay and they book it for the cheapest they can find

I tried to speak to reception this morning but they weren't interested... hotel has a 1* rating though.

Thankfully on the very hot train home now!

In that case I'd definitely highlight the standard of lodgings to your company.
