I witnessed a dog attack this afternoon

I was sat outside a restaurant for a late lunch today and the dog who was with the guys at the neighbouring table lunged, slipped his lead and attacked a passing lady and her little dog.
It was awful, she was just strolling past with her little baby and all hell broke loose.
They both were alive but injured and the guys just ran away with the dog.
I can't stop thinking about it.
I have given my name and details to the police but I can't stop thinking about it. They could have both died a metre away from me.
I don't know why I am writing this but I don't have anybody else to vent to.

@LondonPete
What a shock for you, in such circumstances I find myself going over the situation in my head, and the ‘what ifs’ for a while afterwards.
so perhaps for the next day or so take care of yourself as you process it and recover. Make sure you have had something to eat and drink.

Larner · 05/06/2023 22:35

What?? It attacked a baby??! I hope the police shoot the fucking thing! That is horrific OP. I'm sorry you saw that. Poor wee mite.

Augend23 · 05/06/2023 22:35

Gosh, how horrible for you and for the lady and her dog.

Hopefully the restaurant has CCTV. I can't decide if dog attacks are getting more frequent or are just being reported on more frequently now but it seems like some kind of adjusted stance on dangerous dogs is required.

LondonPete · 05/06/2023 22:35

I ordinarily would have called home and picked my little dog up to take him with me to meet my friend but my son had finished work early as the temp was too hot at his work so I went straight there to meet my friend. It could have been my dog.

It was a dog, not a baby the other dog attacked.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 05/06/2023 22:38

That’s what I mean about the ‘what if’s’
I understand - I have a small dog too and although he has a big voice he would be vulnerable if a bigger breed set upon him. Very frightening and distressing for you.

Sorry, dramatic language from me. It was a lafy and her little dog/puppy. Both were injured. A baby would have stood no chance against it

Myself and another woman were attacked by a dog in 2012. I kept replaying every moment in my head after for a few weeks, it was awful. But then over time you think about it less. Try to distract yourself, watch funny films/programmes and talk to people about it. Then after a while you'll realise you haven't thought about it so much and eventually very rarely x

UndercoverCop · 05/06/2023 22:42

Wow that's awful! To just attack a passerby and another dog like that, but also if that was completely out of character etc you'd expect the owner to stay and deal with the consequences and make sure the poor lady and her dog were ok, not run off!
Hopefully there will be some CCTV and ring doorbells etc around and they get caught

lljkk · 05/06/2023 22:49

I'm confused. Which dog bit who?

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 05/06/2023 22:50

What an awful thing to witness. I feel so sorry for you and the lady and her poor little dog. A nightmare for all of you caused by a bad dog owner. Such a shock. I hope you find some comfort from the suggestions up thread.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 05/06/2023 22:53

@lljkk
my understanding is that a large dog slipped its lead and attacked a lady with a smaller dog who was passing by. OP witnessed this.
OP initially described the smaller dog as a baby but has since clarified it was a puppy/small dog.

Not a real baby, a small dog. I still hope they fucking shoot it.

Chasingadvice · 05/06/2023 22:55

Unpleasant to see I'm sure but you are overreacting- it wasn't that horrific. Two dogs fighting but alive.

LondonPete · 05/06/2023 22:57

They had tied it up to a post next to the table while they took pictures of it and it was snarling and lunging for a while before hand. They had only just got there, I don't know where they had been previous. It had water but did not seem to be used to socialising in that context. In that situation, my dog would have lay down, drank the water and chilled out under the table, waited for people to stroke him etc. He loves going to this restaurant but this dog did not seem to be used to it.
Lots of passers by began to cross over the road in the 30 seconds before as it did not look very happy, people stopped to look as they must have seen/ sensed something and within seconds it was gone. It all happened so fast.

Two dogs were not fighting. One dog ragged a puppy around in its mouth. It's owner managed to grab it and she was then set upon by the dog which probably weighed more than she did and had much sharper teeth. She was cowering in the road with her dog under her, protecting it while the dog continued its attack on her.
It absolutely was horrific

Stop minimising. It sounds awful and speaking from experience, witnessing something similar, it can be hard to shake that feeling of dread and constant ‘what ifs’ playing on you head. Witnessing a dog attack is really scary.

Gosh OP that’s horrific. No wonder it’s playing on your mind.

Cane Corso? Great Dane? Greenland Husky? English Mastiff?

Of course it’s horrific to see a dog attack another smaller dog for no reason!

You are the type of person to keep nasty dogs and just shrug your shoulders when they attack others.

Did you actually read what happened before you mocked? Your ignorance is showing

k1233 · 05/06/2023 23:13

I've had my dog attacked before. It's absolutely horrible. It was a wolfhound and I pretty much strangled it to get it off my dog. It's very traumatic.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 05/06/2023 23:13

You are being crap @Chasingadvice. Bets are on that you have a regularly demonised breed of dog?
