IKnowItsNotMine · 04/06/2023 23:35

Posting her for quick traffic - I’ve got 10 mins to decide !

Relevant :

  • Im literally never off work with sickness - I’ve had covid twice and loads of other illnesses but will power through 😷
  • It’s lovely weather this week (UK) and I want to enjoy it before we’re back in winter.
  • No one covers my job.
  • I need annual leave for childcare in summer hols.

YABU - Get to work you lazy loser
YANBU - Life’s short, you deserve a week in the sun with no pesky kids.

For a day, as a one-off? Do it. A whole week? No. What if you actually need sickness leave? Lost a whole week already - not helpful!

That’s my take. I will take a mental health day (singular) every now and again but usually just stay home and most of the time I am burnt out or exhausted by the time I take it.

A week off to enjoy the sun? You’re taking the piss.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 05/06/2023 04:49

If you need to keep annual leave for school holidays, have you not just had half term off with your kids?

I wouldn’t take time off just because the weather is nice and you’ve had little/no sickness time off plus, when you do go back, you’ll have all your usual work plus anything not done while you were off. But my judgement may be clouded by the fact that, in the last 20+ years, all jobs I had were the kind where, if one person goes off sick, their workload has to be picked up by the rest of the team, fitted around the existing workload and the expectations of the clients (NHS/care work) so someone taking a week off sick if not actually unwell used to grate!!

YABU

I never call in sick either. Many people don't. It doesn't give us a special privilege to skive a week!

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 05/06/2023 06:17

If you have to lie to do something then you shouldn’t do it. You are teaching your children that it’s okay to lie and to skive. Unless of course you lie to them too?

pineapple360 · 05/06/2023 06:21

It's wrong of course but you're not the first or last person to do this.

It's risky - what if (God forbid) you then do become sick and need time off? Depends how much sick pay you get, will you lose out later on?

If no-one is covering your work you'll come back to a back log? How bad is your job for this?

I expect you'll do it and there will be no consequence, but it's tempting fate IMO!

Go for it! Work isn't life.

This. The other comments are hilariously sad.

TallerThanAverage · 05/06/2023 06:48

I wouldn’t but what the heck, couple of three days though rather than a week. Go for it.

ThePlasticScouser · 05/06/2023 06:50

I don't think YABU. I have the least sickness in my department, and was last off sick 2 and a half years ago. Some of my colleagues are off every other week and I am sick of covering for them. I think there is more sickness now than ever and if you don't do something for those who plough on, then expect them to throw sickies to make up for the extra work and stress they have taken on to get the work done.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 05/06/2023 06:55

You must take your employers for mugs if you imagine they won't join the dots.

They will know what you have done.

WonderingWanda · 05/06/2023 06:56

We've just had two weekends of glorious weather, one of them was a Bank Holiday. Did you not enjoy it enough then?

snowlady4 · 05/06/2023 06:57

I would if I had a job where I could get away with it- and not have anxiety from the guilt of it!
If you've the sort of job that doesn't need covered and you're not leaving others on their knees, why not! Life is short. And the whole world managed to close for 2 years not so long ago!
It's a few days. Not a huge deal. Nobody will even care!

8misskitty8 · 05/06/2023 06:59

Sod’s Law will probably mean that after your ‘week off’ you’ll really be sick and now have 2 periods of absence which in alot of jobs triggers a meeting to discuss sickness level.

GraysPapaya · 05/06/2023 07:03

A whole week is ridiculous and if they find out that’s gross misconduct (in my firm fake sickness is taken very seriously).

NashvilleQueen · 05/06/2023 07:03

Surely if no one covers in your absence then either you have to do the excess when you return or, if you don't, you add very little overall value to the business if you can be missing for a week and it make no difference?

I've never done it and wouldn't ever do it just for a few sunny days. If you need the job or have dependents then it's a risk if you're found out somehow. A low one maybe but not zero.

Lazy loser. Bet some poor person will be covering your work otherwise what is the point of you?

This

No, what's sad is the apparent lack of work ethic by some on this thread.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/06/2023 07:06

A week - ridiculous, a day or two - go for it.

DrySherry · 05/06/2023 07:13

Good luck with your next pay rise, promotion or needing some understanding with a life event. Enjoy the sunshine, hope its worth it...

CountZacular · 05/06/2023 07:15

Why do posters keep saying they’ll know? Of course they won’t for goodness sake. They’ll only know if OP gives herself up one way or another.

That said, I wouldn’t do this. I think taking a few days sick leave for burnout is one thing, taking sick because you want to enjoy the sun before winter (in the beginning of June!!) isn’t really justifiable.

FlamingoQueen · 05/06/2023 07:16

Could you not have Wednesday off? I always think Mondays and Fridays are more suspicious!

Museya15 · 05/06/2023 07:16

Do it!

Malibu19880 · 05/06/2023 07:16

Life is short and then you die!
It’s a few days, I say go for it.

My stepdad worked for a company straight out uni for almost 35 years. Worked his way up, sacrificed most of our family life for his job. Always went above and beyond, exemplary employee who did everything by the book. They got rid of his job and made him redundant which sent him spiralling into a deep depression which he has never recovered from.

Take a few days for yourself and ignore all the people who are calling you lazy or questioning your work ethic. It’s all meaningless in the grand scheme of things anyway

CountZacular · 05/06/2023 07:16

DrySherry · 05/06/2023 07:13

If a company is penalising someone for one week sick leave then they are already on rather dodgy grounds and I wouldn’t blame the OP for just taking some time off in that situation.

"Sick" employee returns with tan...

They'll know. They can't prove it, but trust will be damaged.

And it's fraud, even if people don't realise it.

This. Worked with someone who was too ill to come in and teach. She came back after a week. Fabulous tan, hair coloured professionally and beautiful new nails. She was quite open about fancying a week off and spending it sunbathing. Selfish cunt.

astarsheis · 05/06/2023 07:18

Good work ethic you're teaching your kids there
