To think you don’t just get chicken pox on your bum

On Thursday I thought my 4 year is Ds had an insect bite on his upper thigh. Yesterday he had a few on his bum so I thought a gnat had really gone to town on him. Today his bum is really covered especially around the actual bum hole (sorry TMI) and a couple on inner thigh. He’s totally not bothered and absolutely himself. I took him to the pharmacist and he said chicken pox and I agree it does look like that. But after 2 days surely it wouldn’t just be all over his bum but nowhere else? Surely? Any ideas?? I won’t post a picture because, well, it’s his bum but it honestly looks like chicken pox. Just no other symptoms and only on the bum!!

My DC had them only on their bum and legs (none on torso or face) so it is possible

CaptainSeven · 03/06/2023 22:23

I've had a chicken pox a few times (first time was the most serious) and after the first time I only ever got it in patches. Once under an arm pit and once in the middle of my back.

All instances of CP confirmed by a GP...

endofthelinefinally · 03/06/2023 22:25

Is it both sides or just one? One sided could be shingles.

thaegumathteth · 03/06/2023 22:27

Ds had two pox for 3 days before exploding in them on day 4.

MaryShelley1818 · 03/06/2023 22:29

Is it definitely Chickenpox?
Both of my children had Hand Foot and Mouth and had the blisters exclusively on the bottom/genitals, then a few followed on the tongue.
My oldest was misdiagnosed 3 times until I googled it and they finally agreed that's what it was.

LittleMG · 03/06/2023 22:30

@endofthelinefinally all over and not clustered like shingles. @thaegumathteth oh crap that’s tomorrow then 😐

I hope there wasn't anybody pregnant or immunosuppressed in the pharmacy.

DonnatellaLyman · 03/06/2023 22:33

I’d be suspicious for hand foot and mouth - seen lots on the bum!

LittleMG · 03/06/2023 22:33

@MaryShelley1818 that is a distinct possibility I’ll keep my eyes out for that but when he went to bed hands were ok 👍 thanks

I would also say hand foot and mouth. Mine had it mainly in nappy area. Check the blisters. They are more watery with chicken pox and scab more. If you get mouth ulcers in a few days then defs hfm

WhisperingAutistic · 03/06/2023 22:34

My son had spots all over his bum and is immunosuppressed. He was put on an antiviral drip in hospital and had the spots swabbed. Turned out it was a staph infection! Apparently it's not uncommon in the 'nappy' area.

Consultant swore blind it was chicken pox till the swab

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/06/2023 22:40

I think whilst there are typical presentations of chicken pox, in terms of number of spots and where they are located, it can vary massively. So any number, anywhere.

On the torso might be typical but not universal. That said, maybe take him to a GP as none of us here can know.

AssertiveGertrude · 03/06/2023 22:41

Hi op my child got them on his lower half then they lay dormant and came back three weeks later really full on (he’s scarred)

LittleMG · 03/06/2023 22:48

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing do you think I should try and see out of hours dr tomorrow? He’s absolutely fine in himself and not unhappy and itchy, I was dialling 111 earlier and thought it’s not that urgent I shouldn’t waste their time. Would you get it looked at do you think? Perhaps I’ll see if it’s worse tomorrow.

Give it a day or 2. They may well spread.

CiderJolly · 03/06/2023 22:52

If he is fine in himself just leave him be and keep an eye on it. Can’t see the point keep taking him to be looked at when he is otherwise fine.

Follow the rules for keeping him away from the general public while contagious. Hope he is better soon.

There's always one isn't there. What a pointless comment.

LittleMG · 03/06/2023 22:59

@ladymuckofthemanor i did think that 😂 perhaps when I found the spots I should have just gone and had a sit in the garden with a paper bag over my head and a g and t!!

It isn't pointless. NHS advice is to not go into public buildings if you suspect chicken pox.
I am immunosuppressed and I am so sick of people not thinking about risks to other people.
Life is hard enough being ill all the time without knowing that people don't think.

LittleMG · 03/06/2023 23:01

Thanks so much everyone. I will watch and see what happens then. Was going to a theme park tomorrow but we’ll postpone it. Nice day in the garden and hopefully it won’t make him too uncomfortable. So grateful for replies, I know he’s fine but I worry so much about my little dude x

Why not take a photo and show that to the pharmacist? Send it to the gp?
Wait a couple of days to see what develops?

It was the pharmacist who suggested chickenpox, the OP may not have suspected it before going in the pharmacy.

LifeIsPainHighness · 03/06/2023 23:08

OP have you been on holiday this week at all?

starfishmummy · 03/06/2023 23:09

Back to the original question, I still have a scar where I had my one chicken "pock" although not on my bumper. I then kindly passed it to a sibling who was covered in them!
