to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

It can take me that long to hang out a wash but I’m very particular! Firstly, there’s an order of large to small, grouping the smaller pieces and then by person.

However, it makes clearing it faster as things go into individual piles ready to go into the ironing pile or straight upstairs.

StarlightLady · 03/06/2023 17:15

Do you peg everything according to colour? Or do you take everything from the machine to the line individually? I really don't see how it would take 15 minutes, let alone half hour.

2 pegs each for tops for trousers, skirts and dresses, 1 peg for knickers and bras. Simples!

queenatom · 03/06/2023 17:16

Did a full load earlier today (mostly my toddler’s stuff plus a few bits of mine) and that took me 10 minutes and that was including my son ‘helping’ me (pulling the bits off the lower rungs of the dryer and piling them on the floor).

I'm American and can't say I know the reasoning, but I know it's not that uncommon. It tends to be areas like condo developments or housing developments with a residents association that sets rules around things like that, which can often include needing to keep your garden to a certain standard, lawn furniture etc.

It's not my cup of tea but people buying or moving into these neighbourhoods know ahead of time what the regulations are and have agreed to abide by them.

Oh ok, thanks for explaining. That makes more sense than a blanket council/state ruling... I couldn't think what the reasoning would be... But keeping up appearances in a private housing area sounds plausible, if a bit weird to my rural British mind! Actually I was just googling and it seems to be a thing in similar private developments in parts of the UK...

NortieTortie · 03/06/2023 17:19

I don't know. I've had two under two in a flat with no garden access so had to get ~creative~ with my hanging -- it's never taken half an hour. You might need to work on your method 😁

HerMammy · 03/06/2023 17:20

30 mins?? you need more practice to gather speed.

Emeraldrings · 03/06/2023 17:22

Even hanging up the washing with my 2 year old helping doesn't take me 30 minutes. If it did I'd invest in a tumble dryer.

gogohmm · 03/06/2023 17:23

@BriarHare

I'm in the U.K. and I have a covenant that says no washing on balconies, front gardens or anywhere you can view from the street - I ignore them, my balcony is excellent for drying as raised!

Notcontent · 03/06/2023 17:24

There are lots of reason not to use a tumble dryer if you can avoid it. Not just environmental and cost. Clothes last much longer if you air dry and when it’s sunny the sun will also help to kill any bacteria.

Meeting · 03/06/2023 15:55

OP are you running backwards and forwards with handfuls of washing? That's the only way I can think it would take so long. My advice is to empty your machine into a basket and bring the basket along the line with you, pegging as you go.

Maybe she's taking one item at a time from the washing machine to the line? Get a basket!

Boomboom22 · 03/06/2023 17:27

I don't believe the posters saying 5 mins. Time yourself.
If it really did take 5 mins fine but 20 is realistic. From the door unlocking to it all being hung.
I assume these people are not very busy, possibly sahp or pt work so they can afford to say it only takes 5 mins. People who are genuinely pressed for time I think it's worth using the tumble.
Personally my absolute lowest wage is 30 per hour so if it costs less than 7.50 to run and saves me 15mins I think its worth it. I could work for 15 mins and earn 7.50, probably 10 mins tbh on my external work. And the rest of the time I'm a teacher at school so haven't got time like wfh people to just pop it out on a break.

Yes as will the heat of the tumble.

VisionsOfSplendour · 03/06/2023 17:32

I literally can't understand how anyone could do it so slowly. Could you make and post a video

Half an hour is 1800 seconds even if you had 180 items how can it take 10 seconds to peg each item😮

polkadottysilly · 03/06/2023 17:33

When I lived in London there was a rule that we couldn't hang washing up in gardens or on balconies. The whole estate (relatively new) wouldn't allow it.

One of my neighbours did hang on a tshirt over her balcony once and her upstairs neighbour sprinkled it with a hose. I remember the drama.... very posh residents who didn't like the sight of any washing drying anywhere.

They complained it cheapened the area or something!
😂

BooksAndHooks · 03/06/2023 17:33

it take me 10 mins to hang a full load, I manage it before we leave the house before school. I put pants and socks in pairs on the sock octopus hangers from ikea which makes it easier.

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 03/06/2023 17:33

Get solar panels and then you can have a guilt free tumble! 🤣

Show me anyone who hangs their washing up for 30 mins instead of engaging in paid work.

My (dickhead) XP worked it wasn't worth him picking up a dropped 20p on the street because his time was more valuable. He was a v.high earner, but no one was paying him to walk down the street. 20p is 20p to me.

Unless you get paid for unlimited wfh overtime the hourly rate argument isn't really a thing. I often do mine while in a Teams call so double win, but appreciate I am lucky to be able to do this.

PonkyPonky · 03/06/2023 17:41

Get a peg handbag, B&M have them cheap. This will help speed you up. B&M also have the things for hanging all the pants and socks on. This is all you need and you’ll be able to hang a full load out in 5 minutes

Of course it is. So your time outside of working hours is worth nothing at all so you are happy to spend spare time doing housework not relaxing or socialising?

Elevel · 03/06/2023 17:48

so you are happy to spend spare time doing housework not relaxing or socialising?

I know this was for another poster but I would choose housework over socialising any day. 😆

Regarding the OP, as others have said it sounds like you're just taking an unusually long time to peg it up! I'm not bothered about the cost of the dryer, but the heat coming from it on an already hot day is not for me.

Get those octopus arm things for small items socks etc

My octopus still needs all the bloody socks clipped to it

I work 4 days a week and a 9kg load really does take less than 10 mins to hang out. I do that every day of the year aswell as get the kids ready for school, drop off, go onto work and get it in at 5pm. If you do it every day, you get so fast. I can peg things up so quick (my neighbours prob think im crazy if they see me but you do learn to do it quick). I hate tumble dryers, never use them unless its a completely rainy week as they just ruin clothes.

I work full time, am a lone parent and don't own a tumble drier. I really don't see hanging up washing as a big deal. 20 minutes out of a 24 hour day is nothing. I dunno why everyone is in such a rush all the time.

KimberleyClark · 03/06/2023 17:53

I enjoy hanging out the washing when it's a good drying day.

Well think again. I run a business which i started from scratch (not at home), have two kids, and a dog, aswell as going to the gym/running for fitness. Its 10 minutes. Even the busiest of people can spare 10 mins fgs.
