to wonder why nobody ever mentions how long it takes to hang up washing when they tell you not to use your tumble dryer?

I've just hung up a full (9kg) load of washing. It took me half an hour.

I may be unreasonably slow (but kids/ babies= a lot of very small items in a load) and I totally agree with the environmental arguments - but why, when people say 'oh, you can save loads of money by hanging your washing up' do they never talk about how long it takes?

(I don't think it costs as much as £2 to run a full load through our tumble dryer. Even if it did, that's £2 to buy back half an hour. My hourly rate is well above £4...)

I guess it just depends. Tumble dryer and dishwasher are two things that increase our quality of life quite drastically in terms of our household chores. On the surface, hanging out a wash isn't that much of a big deal, but it feeds into everythinge else doesn't it? So I spend 20-30 mins unpegging old wash, hanging up new one up, taking it back inside - if I'd bunged it in TD I could have spent that 20 mins cleaning the kitchen, so I then need to come back inside and do that in addition, so suddenly I've spent 45 mins on chores when I could have spent 20. Now for some people that's not a consideration, they're happy to do that, so they won't really get it.

If it's a day I am not working, the kids are otherwise engaged/at nursery, and I've got nothing else I want to do, then I might 'enjoy' 15 mins hanging the laundry out. But on a normal day I just want to get the boring stuff done so I can get on with everything else I actually want to do. Hence the TD!

I do care about the environment and try to make decisions that are better for it, but there are some decisions where I selfishly do prioritise my own QOL over it and TD is one of them.

I’m so quick at hanging out washing it takes me negative time, I actually get time back.

What takes time in our house is: wrestling the basket out of the back door, which only stays closed with a contraption on it, through the hateful back porch (previous owner DIY job), navigate the treacherous steps down from the side return, dodge the neighbour’s cat poo on the lawn, pull the lines out from the retractor thingy and put the rotary dryer up, search for the pegs that DP puts in different places every week (ADHD), placate the baby in the sling after dropping wet knickers on his head, untangle all the things DD and DP put in the wash inside out/bunched up – wet balled-up socks are the bane of my life. When I could step directly into the garden and hang my own washing it took 5 minutes; with these ingrates and circumstances it’s longer.

"placate the baby ... ingrates" 😂

My suggestion for the balled-up socks etc is to hang them like that and return them like that. At least they then have to do the unballing themselves. I did this with inside out tops and it made me feel much less of my family's servant!

You definitely need to work on your technique.

This. Ten minutes tops, less if no duvet cover to wrangle.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 04/06/2023 12:47

I think it's more likely you'll resent the time doing chores if you are there only one in your house doing them... I quite like hanging out the clothes but it helps that nine times out of ten, DH will empty the dishwasher.

aintnospringchicken · 04/06/2023 12:48

Yup,30 minutes is way too long .
I always line dry my washing in the warmer/drier weather except if it's forecast to rain and I'll be out, then I'll put them on my clothes airer in the conservatory and the heat still dries them.
Pegging items on the line only takes a couple of seconds tops each item .Duvet covers take slightly longer as I wrestle them onto the line.

We have a holiday house in a hot US state. We are actually not allowed to dry washing outside there.

America is so weird. Why would anyone feel so strongly about other people's washing being in their garden that they actually forbid it 😂

I'm in the U.K. and it's forbidden here as technically I'm in an apartment
Have my own private garden though

CrackedSkull · 04/06/2023 12:53

Mum's neighbour family of four , have never hung out washing in the five years they have lived there , even on baking hot summer days . Baking hot days is when I wash curtains, duvets and any other heavy duty hard to dry items .

SweetBirdsong · 04/06/2023 16:34

😂@MissClimpsonsTypingBureau Grin Half hour to put a washing line full of washing out. WTAF? 😂 Like many people here, I do it in 4-6 minutes.

And it's 20 degrees C, and it's June and yet you would rather use the (expensive to run) tumble dryer?!

Most batshit thread of the week. Nice one Grin

Nuts ain't it? We had a young couple live next door to us for 2.5 years circa 2017-2019, and they never EVER put the washing outside. 30-35 C some days. Many many dry days even when it wasn't super hot, and they still used the bloody tumble dryer. For EVERYTHING.

Must have had a HUGE electric bill - even before all the rises. Fuck knows how much they pay now (if they still do it. I don't know as they moved in early 2020.) Utterly bonkers. Never had a tumble dryer in my life, and find it an utter waste of electricity.

Er, carry them.. I manage just fine doing what I'm doing... No other plastic tat needed

You must have longer arms than me! I would leave a trail of socks if I tried to carry a whole load of washing without a basket! 😂 Do you eschew shopping bags as well?

bussteward · 04/06/2023 17:55

Ooh, we’re down to 4 minutes in the competitive speed pegging championship – anyone want to claim they can do it in 2 minutes?

baking hot days im lying on a sun lounger with a solero complaining UK hot is just unbearable and daydreaming of air-conned hotel rooms and all inclusive cocktails by the pool. Im most definitely not washing bloody curtains lol

Felicia00 · 04/06/2023 18:08

I never line dry stuff apart from my uniform it takes too long. I normally will do extra spin then hang on a chair. Also timing the weather is a pita , I work long hours I use a huge heat pump tumble dryer. I don't really care what people think. I want to spend minimal time doing and thinking about laundry.

To be fair... It is only me and my 6 year old DD... I tend to wrap the smaller items up in larger ones... Helps prevent sock trailage.

Felicia00 · 04/06/2023 18:17

I'm one of the neighbours who never puts their washing out. I didn't think people
would would take notice or judge. Honestly I don't give a shit what others think I value my free time much more than spending £2. Trying to time weather remembering to bring it in etc dryer is minimal faff. They need to make a large washer dryer that actually works that would be the dream!!! Large load of clothes come out clean and fully dried

SherbetDips · 04/06/2023 18:42

Takes me 10 mins 😂 what on earth are you doing?

Natsku · 04/06/2023 19:17

I timed myself today, just under 5 minutes at slow hangover speed, but it was mostly jeans and hoodies rather than small fiddly bits

SlippySarah · 04/06/2023 19:24

It's not about the time (10 mins) or the cost for me. Or even the environment- I have solar panels so running a tumble drier in this weather would cost me and the environment nothing. I love the smell and feel of line dried sheets and clothes. I don't own a tumble drier and never will.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 04/06/2023 19:28

There is nothing else like getting into a freshly made bed with fresh bed clothes dried that day on the line 🤗.

SlippySarah · 04/06/2023 19:29

There's a high level of satisfaction to getting all my washing line dried and put away on a sunny day.

LolaSmiles · 04/06/2023 19:31

Joining the chorus saying it isn't a half an hour job.

5-10 minutes depending on what's in the load, and it's better for the bills and planet to dry on the line.

I get annoyed with myself when I don't get lines swapped over in the middle of the day quick enough so don't get 2-3 loads fully dry. It's a free way to dry clothes.

minisoksmakehardwork · 04/06/2023 19:47

@LolaSmiles - big rotary drier is your friend. I can get 4 loads on mine (1 on each arm). It's huge and wasn't cheap but has more than paid for itself. I've had 3 small loads out today so everything is well spaced out and dried so quickly.

Mistymountain · 04/06/2023 19:52

My mother used to make me hang out the washing when I was a child - I absolutely hate hanging out washing and I don't do it, I don't even have a washing line. I do use a clothes horse inside for everything except jeans, sheets and towels - they go in the tumble dryer however sunny it is outside,

LolaSmiles · 04/06/2023 20:50

minisoksmakehardwork
I've had a few people say they love their rotary one.
It's something we should really look into.
