To get budget tyres?

EarlofShrewsbury · 02/06/2023 17:46

Or is that false economy?

I use my car for work so I do a lot of mileage.

The tyres are down to minimal tread again and I need to replace. I usually get the 'good' tyres but I've never really questioned if you get what you pay for or not.

Money is tight so I'm considering the budget ones.

I wouldn't do budget if you do lots of miles, i have them but I only do about 4k a year.

tt9 · 02/06/2023 17:48

tbh I wouldn't. they will just wear out sooner and tbh my car is one thing I try not to get budget things for

SabrinaThwaite · 02/06/2023 17:50

Given that tyres are the only thing that keeps your car in contact with the road I wouldn’t skimp on them.

Thelnebriati · 02/06/2023 17:51

I have now officially turned into my FIL 😆

SolemnLaughter · 02/06/2023 17:52

Most important part of the car.

EarlofShrewsbury · 02/06/2023 17:52

I do about 16k miles a year.

It's a false economy IME. I did this once as I literally didn't have the money for anything better and they barely lasted six months - and I don't do many miles.

I replaced them all with mid-range ones 18 months ago and they've been brilliant.

bonfirebash · 02/06/2023 17:53

Look them up, check the ratings on them and reviews
I have cheaper tyres on mine because they're higher rated for wet braking than the more expensive ones!
If you give the options you're looking at then I'm sure we can help

False economy when I tried.

They wore through much faster, but that wasn't really the biggest issue as they fell apart at the mere hint of a pothole near them. None of them lasted long enough to wear out.
I normally get high middle range now and I'd say over 90% of time I choose to change them because they're getting a bit thin rather than having to because they were damaged.

bonfirebash · 02/06/2023 17:57

Found the brand, I have vredestein on mine. Not the cheapest but a good mid range
Avon were the same price but often have issues with cracking. Very low mileage car so my tyres perish before wearing out!

Pixiedust1234 · 02/06/2023 17:58

I used to go up one band from budget which are okay for lots of normal driving but I now go for the next one up from that as it has better grip in wet weather. Talk to the tyre place to see what they suggest for your needs. We have a small local one which is very busy and seems to be used by all the local taxi firms, they've always shown me what I can have and the prices.

Easier to ask here than sign up to a car forum I would never use.

Plus mumsnet can be brutally honest, which is what I need here.

I normally use Pirelli or Firestone.

BarelyLiterate · 02/06/2023 18:04

If I did a very low mileage, mainly local journeys & rarely drove faster than 30 I might consider budget tyres if money was tight. But, if I did higher mileages & regularly drove on fast roads & motorways there is no way I would compromise on tyres. I would do whatever it took to economise on something else. Something non safety-critical. Cheap tyres are known as ‘ditchfinders’ for a reason.

mogsrus · 02/06/2023 18:07

Budget tyres are ok for a spare or very little hard work. Good tyres wii pay you back in the long run. You will probably notice a difference in noise level as well

Toxicityofourcity · 02/06/2023 18:18

My Mum always said to me to never skimp on tyres or shoes and I think it's really good advice.

I always get the 'expensive tyres'... honestly I'm not sure if the exact eve fits but it gives me a sense of comfort that the only thing sticking me to the road is of a high quality.

What's the problem with asking about tyres? MN is predominantly women so we shouldn't discuss such things? WTH is your comment about?

Polis · 02/06/2023 18:24

Wasn’t there a specific “Car” board for this type of question?

Possibly but as I'm getting the tyres tomorrow I couldn't be waiting days for a reply 😉

Always used budget tyres, for at least 25 years, never had a wear or short life issue, the opposite if fact.
Never drive anywhere near the performance limit of the tyres or car in any respect, so never noticed if they are any different.
When I've bought 'new to me' cars they have come with expensive branded tyres, never seemed to last longer, never noticed a difference when they are replaced with budget alternatives.
Why spend money funding advertising?

Are you implying people on Mumsnet don't know anything about cars?

feeona123 · 02/06/2023 18:32

Budget for me….no problems here!
