to think I can go for a haircut after my C Section

I am booked in for a C section next week for my first baby. I have previously had abdominal surgery, and one thing that really sticks out from my recovery from that is not being able to get my wound wet, and the difficulty I had washing my hair comfortably, but also how much better I felt once I had managed to get it washed!

I'm thinking of trying to get a wash, cut and blow-dry at my local salon in the first few days after I get home, but I'm not sure I can make this work with a newborn!! My partner and my parents will be around, so I'm thinking they can have the baby in the cafe next door whilst I'm in the salon. Even if I need to abandon the cut and blow-dry I will still have clean hair at that point, which would be the main aim of the exercise. Has anyone done this? I could also ask if they'll just do a wash, but it does need a cut too, so it makes sense to try and get it all done at once if possible!

The worst thing after my sections would have been to get I to that hairdressers chair to get my hair washed. Or rather, get out of it.
plus you can be sure that your baby will want feeding (assuming bf) as soon as you walk in the door.
honestly, get your hair done before you have the baby, it won’t be top of your list once Bsby is herr

You will be fine OP. Enjoy a bit of downtime!

The thought of leaning back to the sink in a hairdressers post c-section makes me feel a bit sick, it will not be comfortable.

itssquidstella · 01/06/2023 16:43

I had a shower after a c-section - DS was born just after midnight on Monday and it must have been on Wednesday at some point. I didn't soap my stomach and kept it away from the direct water flow, and patted it dry very gingerly (actually hairdryer on a cool setting from a distance was the best solution for the first week or so). Ours is a step-in shower over bath.

NEmama · 01/06/2023 16:49

I was in the shower less than 12 hours after section. They put a big sticker over wound.
Leaning back in the chair would be uncomfortable

NerrSnerr · 01/06/2023 16:51

I had showers straight after my c sections. In theory this would be fine but I wonder if leaning back over the sink will be painful as it may stretch the bottom of your stomach?

prayforthecottransfer · 01/06/2023 16:53

Two c-sections here.

You can definitely shower and wash hair after. You might find it really uncomfortable sitting in a certain position for too long the first few days post partum. It can be very sore even when healing well.

Also, your newborn is going to have you feeling exhausted from sleep deprivation from the get go. It's likely that will find it a struggle to even find time to shower in those first few days and weeks, let alone nip to the salon.

Completely agree, infact think it will be agony!

OP, hate to tell you this but post caesarean, you'll likely be in allot of pain in the abdomen region for about a week, whatever position you're in (unless you're on hefty painkillers-in which case lucky you as they seem to be like good dust now following c sections).

Leaning back will be horrible tbh (if you want to get back up you'll have to roll round).
Plus if you're breastfeeding you'll likely have leaky, sore boobs and probably have a mix of nice sweating/ water retention going on in every part of your bod. it's not a glamorous time, just embrace that 😂

I've had two sections, one 10 weeks ago.

SchoolShenanigans · 01/06/2023 17:02

Just make sure you can get your money back if you have to cancel/rearrange. I couldn't walk for a week after my c section due to infection.

bowzen · 01/06/2023 17:03

I had a shower and washed my hair the day after my c section whilst in hospital (was told to take the dressing off in the shower). The hospital shower will be easy to access with a seat to sit on if needed. Hope it all goes to plan!

Bournetilly · 01/06/2023 17:39

I had a shower the day after my c section, it would have been too painful to go to the hairdressers in the first 2 weeks.

Pip244 · 01/06/2023 17:49

I had one just over a week after my c section and then went to a wedding (with baby) and had been to get my nails done the day before! DP walked round with baby whist I had my nails done and my mum watched him whilst I had my hair done. He was bf but took a bottle for her and I was away for less than an hour each time. It was nice to do normal things tbh! If you think you’ll enjoy it, go for it!

Hankunamatata · 01/06/2023 17:55

Get a cut now and then you could just get wash and blow dry after birth?

Is 'get a hair cut now' the new cancel the cheque?

starfishmummy · 01/06/2023 19:08

A pp said the midwives told her to shower the day after c section. In my case I was told they had runme a bath and helped me in and out of it!

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 01/06/2023 19:10

My dressing was off before inwas discharged from the hospital. I was having showers 24 hrs later. I also have a tubby belly and overhang so not ideal for abdominal surgery.

Just dont use soaps on the wound or rub it. Pat dry with a clean towel.

Sugarfree23 · 01/06/2023 22:14

@WindUpPenguin
Being curious where is your existing scar?
Mine runs from just below my ribs to my belly button. And I definitely couldn't get my hands above shoulder height immediately after my Op.
Could it be because the c-section wounds are so much lower down that it doesn't affect arm movements.

GG1986 · 01/06/2023 23:06

Personally I think it will be really painful to sit with your head leading back into the bowl. You can shower after c section so just wash your hair then and use dry shampoo in between. It's hard having a newborn those first few weeks, you won't give a shit about your hair!
