to think I can go for a haircut after my C Section

I am booked in for a C section next week for my first baby. I have previously had abdominal surgery, and one thing that really sticks out from my recovery from that is not being able to get my wound wet, and the difficulty I had washing my hair comfortably, but also how much better I felt once I had managed to get it washed!

I'm thinking of trying to get a wash, cut and blow-dry at my local salon in the first few days after I get home, but I'm not sure I can make this work with a newborn!! My partner and my parents will be around, so I'm thinking they can have the baby in the cafe next door whilst I'm in the salon. Even if I need to abandon the cut and blow-dry I will still have clean hair at that point, which would be the main aim of the exercise. Has anyone done this? I could also ask if they'll just do a wash, but it does need a cut too, so it makes sense to try and get it all done at once if possible!

I showered and washed my hair the morning after c section. No issues. No way would I have been heading to the hairdresser in the first few days after birth though. Far too much movement for me.

overitunderit · 01/06/2023 15:15

Very kindly this is a ridiculous idea. Get your hair cut before you have the baby and shower as normal afterwards. It's highly likely you won't want to be in a noisy hairdresser for 3 hours after you've had your baby or even to be parted from them for this long.

Wicksytricksy · 01/06/2023 15:18

I was in the shower the day I got home. DH had to help me over the side of the bath but otherwise fine. Wasn't up for shaving my legs but washing hair was no problem!

Is this your first baby by any chanceGrin

Clearly so or you would know that it would be extremely painful and foolish to try this. How would you bend backwards for your hair to be washed?

2021mumma · 01/06/2023 15:20

I left horrendous first few weeks after csection I could barely walk to the toilet let along sit in a chair for a haircut

Summerfun54321 · 01/06/2023 15:28

You will have absolutely no idea (and neither will we) about how you will feel depending on how it goes and how you recover. Just let the medical professionals advise on how best to wash. For everyone's sake don't book that salon appointment.

SparklyBlackKitten · 01/06/2023 15:32

Trying to stirr up some shit op 🤣?

If this post is serious and lets face it: it is not Get your haircut BEFORE baby's born . After your baby is born you'll be in pain and exhausted and not wanting to sit at the hairdresser for an hour with leaking breasts and bleeding from your vagina like there is no tomorrow and being sore like you have been run over by a truck

And taking a few days old baby to a cafe? A newborn with no immune system? Great idea 😉

queenatom · 01/06/2023 15:35

I had a shower as soon as I was able to get out of bed after my section (within about 7 hours, once I could move my legs again). Between the recovery room being 1000 degrees, the nurses forgetting to put a nappy on my baby so he emptied his bowels all over me, and managing to rip my cannula out whilst feeding and getting blood everywhere, I was absolutely revolting. That was the best shower of my life - someone I know described it as being like the shower you take after 5 days at Glastonbury!

UpTheAnte · 01/06/2023 15:36

Haven't had a c-section but dry shampoo came in very handy when I had newborns. Just sayin'. No-one expects you to look immaculate, just clean.

Imisspacers · 01/06/2023 15:40

Standing in the shower to wash your hair will be much more comfortable than leaning back to have your hair washed at the hairdressers.

Springbaby2023 · 01/06/2023 15:44

I had an emergency c section four weeks ago and have had no problem washing my hair. Dressing was off in 24 hours and I was encouraged to get the wound wet twice a day to keep it clean. Was never told I couldn’t use shampoo and conditioner, just not to apply toiletries direct to wound (common sense!) I think I washed my hair the day I left hospital which was about 36 hours after c section.

failing that there is always dry shampoo to get you through the first week until you feel up to it!

Cantbelieveit888 · 01/06/2023 15:48

I have had 2- c sections and although both experiences were not bad, the last thing I could think of was having a salon wash, haircut and blow dry. You will still be in a fair bit of pain a few days after surgery.
I definitely understand about feeling washed and refreshed and I was told 2 days after my second c section by a nurse to have a shower to remove the bandaging and just have a light clean. You are allowed to have a light wash and a slow pat dry of the area.
good luck next week!

Thanks for all the helpful comments telling me that this would be a bad idea. Obviously I asked because I didn't know, and now I do. After my abdominal surgery I wished I had gone to a salon instead of kneeling over the bath to wash my hair, so the idea was based on my previous experience. Great to know that I might be able to have a shower straight-away. That would be wonderful.

Those saying go for a haircut before the baby is born, you are missing the point.I do not want one (mainly I don't want to pay for one!) but I thought I might as well get one if I was paying for a wash and blow-dry anyway.

I've never had a csection so can't comment at all on that aspect of it but in terms of the haircut alone and time away from your baby it should be fine.

I thought I was being super organised by booking a cut, colour and blow dry two weeks before my due date - except DS1 came 3 weeks early so was a week old on the day of the appointment. I was ebf but made sure to feed him just prior to leaving for the appointment. I was gone for around 2 and a half hours and he was fine, he slept for most of the time and DH walked him in the pram to keep him settled when he woke.

It was my regular hairdresser though and the salon is spacious (so room for the pram to be out of the way of danger from hot appliances or chemicals. I had also checked with them in advance if they would be happy for DH to bring DS in for a feed if it was really necessary and they had no problem with it and would have been happy for me to use the staff room to feed if needed.

After a week of having DS glued to me pretty much 24/7 it actually felt quite good to have an hour or two away and it gave DH a chance to be number 1 parent for a while.

TheSnailAndTheWaaaail · 01/06/2023 15:52

I had no problem showering after my c section. Initially the wound was covered by a really thick rubbery waterproof dressing so it was fine even the day after. I personally don't remember any issues washing my hair or pain lifting my arms (baby is 9 months so wasn't that long ago!)

mondaytosunday · 01/06/2023 15:55

Well as people have said, you can shower.
But I don't see any issue with going to a salon if that's what you want. I went out to lunch the day after I came home with my baby after a section and he mostly stayed in his pram. Someone can sit in the salon with your baby if you want, but why not have them next door café as you suggest? What's going to happen? Presumably you feed the baby before you leave him. I'm sure I just had my baby in a pram (which might not fit in a small salon) when I had appointments and it wasn't a problem.

2bazookas · 01/06/2023 15:59

I think you'd find leaning back to the basin for a hair wash, very uncomfortable.
Even sitting upright in hard chair long enough to get a cut and blowdry.

slowrunner07 · 01/06/2023 16:02

You'll have a waterproof dressing on and you'll be able to shower and wash your hair no problem.

Cosycover · 01/06/2023 16:03

I had a shower the morning after my c section.

TiredandLate · 01/06/2023 16:04

Would using a jug over the kitchen sink work better? Less leaning over than the bath?

Bloopsie · 01/06/2023 16:08

Why…have it before the c section, you will be sore, newborn who needs attention etc. Showering is not a problem i have had the same day as section and the next morning et ,its bending your head back, depends how much is blood loss during section how you will be feeling overall if its 1.8l+ you would be feeling wiped out for a while some stay in hospital for transfusions etc

AxolotlEars · 01/06/2023 16:12

I have had 5 sections and would definitely had done that if I had thought of it! Was in the shower the day after

CornishGem1975 · 01/06/2023 16:16

You can 100% have a shower after a c-section. I was desperate to get in!

TheShellBeach · 01/06/2023 16:22

You won't want to leave your baby.

Roselilly36 · 01/06/2023 16:26

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 01/06/2023 14:43

Sitting back into the bowl, your new wound won't thank you for that move.

My thoughts exactly.
