To think that this is jaundice in eye? Photo attached

I just want to clarify first that I have pulled my eye down in this picture but cropped it, my eye isn't naturally like this.

I drink too much- this I know to be the case. I went through a LOT and used alcohol as a crutch- I know this know. I am cutting down and I had a blood test done 3 months ago in which my liver results were slightly high but only just over average and doctor wasn't concerned. However, I have had a really hard time the last month and fell back into drinking too much (not spirits, 'just' wine) and I pulled my eyelid down today and it seems to be yellow. I am scared shitless that it is jaundice which is a late stage symptom (I believe) of liver disease. I did have slight eye irritation a few days ago and woke up a few times with this eye being gunky but it cleared up yesterday. Other eye is fine, a little blood shot but I'm not getting enough sleep so I put it down to that. I showed someone and they said I'm overreacting so Aibu to assume jaundice? Thank you in advance for your opinion.

Looks totally normal to me and mine is the same.

TheShellBeach · 31/05/2023 18:20

That is not jaundice and if you do get it, it would be in both eyes.

DetoxedAlcoholic · 31/05/2023 18:21

I wouldn't see that as jaundice, would be a more pronounced, darker yellow.

But... You know what this means and you know what you need to do. Alcohol is an awful, evil crutch and will bring you far further down than anything else. Please keep going with lowering your alcohol consumption. Well done for seeing the problem and doing something, you can do it and continue to 👍

TheShellBeach · 31/05/2023 18:22

But OP. Maybe this is a wake up call for you to try to stop drinking so much.

Sisisimone · 31/05/2023 18:23

Erm no. Everyone's eye whites are a little creamier colour under the lid. If you're liver results are deranged though you know you need to stop

Jojobees · 31/05/2023 18:24

Go to your GP, request LFT’s and go from there.
Although jaundice can also be caused by gall bladder problems.
If you are worried see your GP.

Sisisimone · 31/05/2023 18:25

and it makes no difference that its wine not spirits. Its still alcohol that your liver has to work hard to clear

Yes. You need to understand this.
Wine isn't better. It's still alcohol.

@TheShellBeach you are right, of course. I know it's as bad rationally cI'm an idiot Sad

Go back to your GP and ask for help. There's no shame in it.

StrikeItMucky · 31/05/2023 18:35

Most definitely not jaundice. As pp have said, it would be in both eyes and a more distinct and darker yellow.
Make an appointment with your gp and try to get some support regarding your alcohol consumption.
And well done for admitting you have a problem, thats normally the hardest part. You've done it once so you know you can do it again...keep at it x

pancakesandlemons · 31/05/2023 18:36

It doesn't look like DH's eyes did when he was jaundiced.

Irridescantshimmmer · 31/05/2023 18:37

No its fat.

I have seen full blown jaundice in the eye of an alcholic nieghbour years ago and its is something that can not be missed......as bright as a belisha beacon and once you see it there is no mistaking it for anything rlse.

They were already in hospital and recieving treatment for it at the time.

Good news was this person made a full recovery.

iwishicouldb · 31/05/2023 18:46

@Irridescantshimmmer glad to hear that they made a full recovery. By fat, do you mean a build-up of which would be related to eating too many fatty things? That is also possible.

Yerroblemom1923 · 31/05/2023 18:48

No. It's normal. I've seen a homeless guy with jaundice and they're was no mistaking his yellow eyes - from a distance too. It might be worth hopping over to the alcohol threads on here for some help and support. I know you're cutting down which is a good step and I'm assuming you're trying to taper off rather than going cold turkey, which you know could be dangerous. Are you getting help from your GP?

PinkFootstool · 31/05/2023 19:15

Jaundice would affect the whole of the white of the eye.

Maybe it's a good time to seek some support with both what you're dealing with day to day and the drink?

OCDmama · 31/05/2023 19:17

I really hope not because my eyes look like this and I don't even drink!

HootyMcBooby76 · 31/05/2023 19:24

No this is not jaundice.
As others have said, jaundice in the eye (scleral icterus or conjunctival icterus) affects the whole of the white of the eye.
The area around the margins of the sclera is always a more creamy colour than the white. Yours looks normal but if you're unsure ask for a bilirubin blood test from the GP.
Or another full LFT (liver function test) to make sure your values are returning to normal.

Check the roof of your mouth. In jaundice this is usually also a yellow colour.

Spicypeanuts · 31/05/2023 19:30

Jaundice can start as a really pale yellow. I noticed it in a family member because their eyes looked like buttered popcorn (a mix of white and really pale yellow) and their nail beds were slightly yellow. It took about four days for their eyes to get that dark yellow and a few days later the skin yellowed.

If you're concerned if get it checked out

BMW6 · 31/05/2023 19:34

My DH developed jaundice from cirrhosis of the liver.
He was pretty much the same colour as Homer Simpson- and the whites of his eyes were just as yellow.

You've had an early warning. Heed it.

verabarbleen · 31/05/2023 19:52

I think it looks normal although this was my jaundice eye last year due to gallstones it was a lot yellow than the picture shows

To give a blunter description than you'll usually get, my ex's eyes were the colour of piss when you've just walked 30 miles out of a desert following a plane crash.

Or, if you've ever seen the colour that iodine stains your skin - that shade - or a little darker.

It could possibly be fatty liver, Grade 1. I am going through the same, if I continue to consume alchohol and eat unhealthy foods (especially processed food) I could end up with a full blown liver problem, check the stages or grades of liver ailments. There's no medication for grade 1 fatty liver, fortunately I can reverse it with avoiding processed and unhealthy foods. No drinking and no smoking too.

Get an ultrasound done. I'm quite certain it's fatty liver.

Missingmyusername · 14/01/2024 09:22

See a G.P, get some support for your drinking op. Good luck.
