Misophonia - anyone else?

I think I’ve suffered from this for many years now - it’s worse now to be honest.

I feel triggered and irrationally angered by:

whistling (I have a colleague who does this. I literally have to grit my teeth and stop myself from shouting at him to shut the fuck up)
throat clearing, coughing, sniffing
eating sounds - this isn’t such an issue for me now, as I live alone, am for the most part a lone worker, and tend not to notice it whilst in restaurants etc with friends as background noise phases it out
there’s a bench behind my workplace, and you can hear everything, I hate peoples sitting there and having long phone conversations. If I could move the bench, I would
people sitting in their cars for hours playing r n b music, something with bass
car engines idling

I’m sure there are more. Rather conversely I love watching ASMR videos. Especially whispering, mouth sounds, tapping and so on. What’s that all about then?!

I have this. People eating is the worst. I'm sure this won't go down well on here but literally every noise children make boils my piss. The sloppy eating, the squeaky whiney voices, the high pitched squeeling, even the gorky laughing. I absolutely detest it. Asmr videos make me feel sick and I even hate the old skittles advert that used to whisper taste the rainbow (I don't know if this still exists I haven't watched tv in years). All of the above make me feel incredibly angry and have intrusive murder thoughts. Horrible. Yuck.

Newjobtorment · 31/05/2023 15:58

I think I have this too. Noises make me so angry - especially if the noise is coming from the person such as whistling, really loud talking, children screaming. I can't bear supermarkets.

nahwhale · 31/05/2023 15:59

Eating but only certain people eating. Mostly men. Like a huge cavenous mouth just ew stop it get out my ear space.

NancyJoan · 31/05/2023 16:00

Whistling is the absolute worst for me. It makes me both furious, and tearful, at the same time.

Newjobtorment · 31/05/2023 16:01

I switched the TV off last night as that dreadful man on the One Show was eating and talking at the same time, it literally made me feel sick.

HairyMolly1 · 31/05/2023 16:01

Not misphonia but my 10yr old has just been diagnosed with hyperacusis secondary to some hearing loss. Being referred to an audio vestibular specialist. In the meantime we've bought her Loop earplugs and they're helping a lot.

Yes ‘child’ noises set me off too.
Weirdly, I have two of my own (now adult) but I don’t recall it affecting me when they were small.

I have this too. My dog's mouth noises, I cannot bear. She sits with me WFH all day long😭.

A strange, recent one is fizzy drink being poured into a glass, especially if quickly. ASMR is torture.

That is the same exact reaction for me!

Mine is breathing. It came on suddenly during my first pregnancy and got worse during my second (I can't stand my own breathing!).

It's horrible.

Summerdressandjellyshoes · 31/05/2023 16:05

I think I have this but also suspect autism.

I cannot stand certain noises, to the point that it causes physical pain.

My husband gets coughs a lot that go on and on and the noise hurts so much that my whole body tenses up.

Sirens, loud ringtones, certain eating noises, loud sneezing, conflicting noises so if the tv is on and one of the kids is watching a video, certain peoples voices if they are loud, high pitched and shrill.

RosaMoline · 31/05/2023 16:06

I used to work in a more enclosed area, and I had to deal with habitual pen tappers and worse, hummers. I couldn’t take it anymore so I actually did tell them to stfu 🤬 😂

I have this. I am very sensitive and it causes me rage! It's good to know other people have the same issues!!

Whistling, my god, my neighbour does it and it drives me INSANE!

I can't stand chewing noises and blocked noses/people sniffing the snot up, or people who talk and it's obvious their nose is blocked by how they talk - drives me crazy.

I'm very sensitive to snoring/breathing noises as well, like if my husband falls asleep before me sometimes I need to go to another room. I also wear ear plugs.

I am also weird about hearing someone's radio, say if it was on a talking radio station so it just makes a load of muffled deep mumble sounds.

And strangely I'm funny about certain things I see, like if someone were to be doing something with their little finger poked out, but the rest of their fingers not, that would highly irritate me.

As well as people moving their toes or wiggling their foot but not realising they're doing it.

Haha god I'm a mizzer!

I asked a chewing gum chewer to please stop. It was torture.

Elphame · 31/05/2023 16:11

I'm really sensitised to some noises.

Trail bikes, children shrieking and any sounds that are not under my control like builders machinery and chain saws are particularly bad.

I need to go and live on a desert island.

I’ll join you on that desert island.
I promise not to annoy you with my noises! 😂

I could have written this ^ except weirdly I quite like whistling!

jammydodgies · 31/05/2023 16:15

I'm also weird about how my husband eats soup or cereal. And just hearing the spoon hit the bowl in the morning can put me on edge!

Eyesopenwideawake · 31/05/2023 16:16

There's a bit of your brain called the Reticular Activating System and it's job is to filter out unimportant stuff and alert you to things the mind has decided are important. It's why people can sleep in noisy airports, it why you suddenly notice the mark and model of car you've decided to buy everywhere and it's why you can hear your own name mentioned across a party.

With misophonia, part of your subconscious mind has attached an over attentive, emotional response to everyday sounds that other people don't even notice. It responds well to remedial hypnosis - simply by telling that part of the mind to stop.

WHY can't they fucking eat quietly? WHY?

It's a good thing I am starting HRT this month. Not a moment too soon!

DemonicCaveMaggot · 31/05/2023 16:22

Tapping or clicking noises drive me insane. Knitting, pen noises, keyboard tapping, all are irritating. Thank goodness I had my own office when I was working. People snorting up snot is also annoying and the next time someone on a plane does that I swear to God I'm offering them a tissue with a look in my eye that is not to be denied.

If you whistle in public I could quite happily drown you. With prejudice. So yes, this is turning me into a sociopath or homicidal maniac.

Strangely enough I don't mind children's noises as they all come under the heading of 'somebody else's problem' so can be ignored.

RosaMoline · 31/05/2023 16:22

Also:
people scraping out of yoghurt pots 😭

Slurping drinks or soup, gulping, mouth noises e.g. loud gum chewing, keyboard clicks (the fake ones on a phone), game noises, videos coming out of other people's phones, nail clipping or filing, scraping of anything.

I get genuinely distressed and have to remove myself! I'm sure people think I'm mad.

Outdamnspot23 · 31/05/2023 16:24

oh god how could I forget sniffling/hawking up phlegm/snorting up snot. 😭
