Misophonia - anyone else?

RosaMoline · 31/05/2023 15:12

I think I’ve suffered from this for many years now - it’s worse now to be honest.

I feel triggered and irrationally angered by:

whistling (I have a colleague who does this. I literally have to grit my teeth and stop myself from shouting at him to shut the fuck up)
throat clearing, coughing, sniffing
eating sounds - this isn’t such an issue for me now, as I live alone, am for the most part a lone worker, and tend not to notice it whilst in restaurants etc with friends as background noise phases it out
there’s a bench behind my workplace, and you can hear everything, I hate peoples sitting there and having long phone conversations. If I could move the bench, I would
people sitting in their cars for hours playing r n b music, something with bass
car engines idling

I’m sure there are more. Rather conversely I love watching ASMR videos. Especially whispering, mouth sounds, tapping and so on. What’s that all about then?!

OP posts:

I had no idea what asmr videos were but on googling it, the mere description of them makes me feel murderous. I love whistling but I can't stand crisp eating, yoghurt pot scraping, whispering, noisy eating in general, loud stirring, meals with no background noise so that you can hear cutlery on plates, and many, many other things.

Jacopo · 31/05/2023 18:41

Oh my god, another one is those metal chair legs in cafes when they are dragged loudly across the floor and bang into the table legs too. Especially when someone is cleaning the floor and it’s DRAG! BANG! CLANG! CRASH! DRAG AND BANG AGAIN!!!

UncleHerbie · 31/05/2023 18:51

I love my stepson but he manages to chomp AND hum when eating, possibly because he watches shit on his tablet constantly - when putting on his washing, looking in the fridge, emptying the dishwasher - all done one handed while watching said crap. Drives me mad. My husband eating doesn’t affect me at all

CustardySergeant · 31/05/2023 18:52

I also have misophonia and as well as all the annoyances that have been mentioned, the one thing that makes me really murderous is people yawning - and the more of a 'production' they make out of it, the worse it is. Especially if it's loud and accompanied by "Oh dear, I'm so sleepy" 🤬. Just the word "sleepy" infuriates me tbh (haven't liked typing it). The thing is, the yawn replays in my head thousands of times, like I'm torturing myself. Just seeing a yawn, even without being able to hear anything, is bad enough. How do these aversions happen I wonder?

Oh fucking hell mine does this as well. Along with 'mmmm mmmm' sounds whilst eating 😡

Villagetoraiseachild · 31/05/2023 18:56

Very helpful thread Op!
I've looked up Calmer earbuds, not expensive, will give those a go.
Will also consider hypnotherapy if they dont work.
I am ridiculously sound sensitive but to be fair, we're not a very considerate culture when it comes to noise....
Japan was heaven, bar the slurping noodles!
Ones that drive me nuts....best friend chomping crisps, clnkng teaspoon against cup or mug, rattling car keys, some sirens, high pitched yappy dogs....

redfacebigdisgrace · 31/05/2023 18:57

YY to all of this! I thought it was just me being an increasingly grumpy bugger!

@Eyesopenwideawake could you possibly DM with details as I am very interested! Thanks.

Ontheperiphery79 · 31/05/2023 18:59

I've got (at last count) 2 sets of Loops, one set of Flares and one set of in ear noise cancelling headphones to help me with my auditory processing issues. It's the only way I can cope. 😅

Jeez I forgot about the mmmm mmmm mmmms. Make. It. Stop!!! 🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉

Mariposista · 31/05/2023 19:01

For me it's mouth noises. Kissing, raspberry blowing, tutting, eating with mouth open. Hate it.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 31/05/2023 19:13

My dd(15) has misophonia, it came on when she was 12 during lockdown. I'm her main trigger - eating, sniffing, speech sounds, breathing (even what I consider silent breathing), rubbing my leg or arm. It's been a challenging few years for us both, and I worry so much about her future ability to form relationships. She pretty much lives in her Airpods at home, which can't be good for her ears, but it's the only way she can be near me. We don't eat together, and I have to really control how I speak to her and keep it short.

Purplebunnie · 31/05/2023 19:27

Can't stand OH strumming his guitar, it's electric but not plugged into an amp, I could scream.

Also can't cope with people talking and the TV on at the same time

Could I have Misophonia?

Whistling is awful.

People who jingle change in their pockets & keys. Gives me bad anxiety 🤣

Lapland123 · 31/05/2023 19:37

Eating. It’s horrendous.

I thank my lucky stars i don’t work in some open plan setting and really feel for those that experience misophonia and are exposed to all this all the time

70sTomboy · 31/05/2023 20:02

Eating
Drinking
Slurping
Sniffing
Snot dragging
DH clearing his throat after eating ( tube fed but insists he has dinner, can't swallow so hawks it back up fucking revolting )
I left a job partly because of the boss constantly snorting
My own kids learnt to eat properly before they were 2! they wouldn't have survived otherwise 😆

I also have auditory processing disorder as well as misophonia, so sounds are a problem full stop.

EerieSilence · 31/05/2023 20:06

Fibromyalgia and chronic migraines here. Misophonia is almost killing me sometimes. I once got sick because of a sound someone close to me made, they didn't even realise I was having a problem with it.

Plumspearsbanana · 31/05/2023 20:10

Yes me too, I can’t cope with loud swallowing noises when drinking (tea, water anything really), some people (like me) can swallow almost silently but some are very loud when swallowing.

eating, humming, and shuffling - why do some people shuffle their feet (people who don’t have a disability and clearly can help it).

Also something which is getting far worse for me is loud unexpected noise.
sudden door slamming from the wind catching it, if my dog is sleeping and suddenly barks because he heard something etc.

I was in a supermarket yesterday and someone dropped a pallet of cans. I swear I almost jumped out of my skin and was visibly shaking.

I don’t think it’s likely to improve at all, just seems to be getting worse!

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 31/05/2023 20:39

Not asking for details but does sex become unbearable at times when noise is made? Not 'actual down 'there noise - just kissing noise - lip smacking or saliva noise..

girlfriend44 · 31/05/2023 21:20

Yes, eating, snoring, the TV loud.

I have the loop ones. Very helpful for the train

Summerdressandjellyshoes · 31/05/2023 16:05

I think I have this but also suspect autism.

I cannot stand certain noises, to the point that it causes physical pain.

My husband gets coughs a lot that go on and on and the noise hurts so much that my whole body tenses up.

Sirens, loud ringtones, certain eating noises, loud sneezing, conflicting noises so if the tv is on and one of the kids is watching a video, certain peoples voices if they are loud, high pitched and shrill.

I identify so much with your last sentence. I can't cope with the DC talking to me when the radio is on. DH blows his nose like an elephant every night right next to me, doesn't turn away or go to the other end of the room. Makes me physically wince but he thinks I'm overreacting.

Mykittensmittens · 31/05/2023 21:34

Yep. Me too. All the stuff mentioned (whistling, tapping, twitching, coughing, clicking, etc) plus…

DH scrapes plates then bangs the implement on the side of the bin in a rhythmic little ditty - like ‘tap, tap, tappity tap’ - every single fucking time.

Then he also puts shit noise on his phone - maybe music or talking - and then walks about the house or garden. The noise moves as he moves so it comes into my audio field then out again, fucking constantly. Fading in, fading out. And it’s tinny. And my brain has this weird thing where it identifies the music and can’t not do that, so I’ll be thinking ‘that’s Pink Floyd’ (or whatever) and it overtakes any other thought and I can’t not hear it. Even the lowest mumbling noise overtakes my head. It drives me and. My blood pressure rises. I’ve had significant dental issues through clenching. He says I’m being unfair and ridiculous.

however ticking clocks, bird song, water sounds, i all find incredibly calming.

PatchworkElmer · 31/05/2023 21:38

I’m so relieved to hear that others have this with whistling! We have 2 people who do it at work and I honestly have to take myself into a meeting to avoid bursting into tears 🙈

I also have a visual thing about people juggling their feet. I have to walk away.

bonfirebash · 31/05/2023 21:47

I really struggle with people eating when I'm on the phone to them, and because my job is on the phone it happens a lot
White hot rage and I've been so close to putting the phone down but obviously I can't
"Sorry I'm just eating my cereal"
YES I CAN HEAR IT
