Sick of some Cornish people bleating on as though they are the worlds only tourist destination

Just read the article below and found a few gems such as these:

’ have you ever wondered where the local people live? Or have you noticed that many of your holiday neighbours are recognisable in the narrow lanes of the pretty fishing villages because they are the same people you live near in London?’

and…

‘Despite what you may have read, we Cornish do welcome visitors and are happy to share our love of our land with you. But it might help if you do a bit of research – Cornwall is fiercely independent and has a proud and unique history and heritage…* *And try not to be rude to local people. If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that. Don’t forget to tip waiting staff. ‘

What patronising bollocks. So Londoner’s (as those are apparently the only people who visit Cornwall) are so untraveled and boorish we need to be told not to be rude to people, pay tips, not to smash glass bottles in sand, that we’ve bought all of their houses, that it’s ‘their’ land and we’re the ones who are rude?

I’d already decided I wouldn’t go back there after how some of them carried on during Covid but this article has pissed me off. Why would anyone go there when they can go to equally lovely places in the UK/World and not be treated with contempt?

if I lived in a place where going about one's daily business in a car became very difficult at certain times of the year, I think I might try and adapt my life at those times, failing that- leave the house earlier to make time for all the car reversing

I live in a busy seaside town.
That's EXACTLY what we do
It's not fucking rocket science.
"Oh look it's sunny today, we'll stay away from the main road then"
"Oh it's half term, let's avoid the park that every fucker goes to as they stumble off the train and go to the prettier one they don't use"
"Gosh, would you look at that? It's peak season! Let's go to the other beach that no-one ever goes to because they don't ever travel far from the main strip"
See?
Easy.

As a Londoner I love the idea of going about one’s daily business in a car being difficult only at certain times of the year…

EffortlessDesmond · 01/06/2023 20:19

As a resident of Cornwall who has nothing to do with the tourism industry, I like the summer season with people enjoying our county. I am careful to time any trips to the supermarket to dodge the busy times, and I like to help visitors understand the landscape and the industry that shaped it. I hope I am not being patronising (I was accused of being so upthread). I am also not about to share details of the bits that I enjoy using quietly. Those are privileged local knowledge. Travel journalists are a scourge.

But London is generally better served by public transport than Cornwall ....

EffortlessDesmond · 01/06/2023 20:36

It makes sense for London and other cities to spend on infrastructure, because it will be intensively used. In rural areas, it won't be. We have an adequate bus route during the day, and a tiny branch line rail link that runs back and forth roughly every two hours between 6.30 and 2100. Beyond that, you organise a taxi.

With unlimited access to tubes, trains, buses and taxis. From where do you find the strength to carry on Hmm

Buses and taxis being subject to the same difficulties as cars…

crackofdoom · 01/06/2023 21:04

Oh, are there not bus lanes in London? That taxis can, also, use? 🤔 I did hear tell of such things in That London Where the Streets are Paved where I lived for 10 years and of course I took public transport like everyone else because driving round London is a fucking stupid idea

EffortlessDesmond · 01/06/2023 21:08

Well, locally, we have buses and trains -- but the timetable may not work for you. It is timed to get DC to school and home, and to take you into the local city for a theatre... but getting home afterwards; sorry, get a taxi. A hospital appointment? take a train and then a bus which is fine if you can walk in between. It's better than nothing of course. And better than nothing doesn't really work if we are serious about getting people out of private cars.

FrostyFifi · 01/06/2023 21:12

@DontGoThereYet do take them, if you can go out of peak season it'll be lovely, I don't recognise most of what is being described on this thread, but I know how fraught things can get when it's over busy - the lovely Lake district is hell in the holidays too.
But please don't let one batshit MN thread put you off.

EffortlessDesmond · 01/06/2023 21:16

Cornwall is gorgeous. Come in late May, before it is busy, when it is at its most beautiful. Did I type that? It's half term and it's already a bit frantic this year.

Fizbosshoes · 01/06/2023 21:19

Mirabai · 01/06/2023 20:54

It’s not what it’s cracked up to be.

I went to Cornwall on holiday last year, I barely saw a bus all week. The place we stayed was technically about 6 miles from the nearest station but it took about 50 min to drive, due to the nature of the lanes, even without a lot of traffic

In contrast I've lived/commuted in London all my life. I know there are areas that are less well served than others, but they're not generally that far away from public transport options.

Mirabai · 01/06/2023 21:20

Just to refresh your memory - far more roads than bus lanes, only black cabs can use them, and there are areas hard to reach on public transport. Many routes that would take 15 mins in a car could take an hour on public transport.

Sigmama · 01/06/2023 21:22

Also there are lots of towns in Cornwall, if ones daily business is in one of those towns, just walk or cycle, not everyone needs to drive everywhere all the time

PaulineG1990 · 01/06/2023 21:30

The other thing I hate is that lots of the staff in shops and restaurants we go to keep addressing me as Karen. I assume that’s a local thing. It’s annoying though. I had to speak to the manager about it at one restaurant we visited last year.

Maireas · 01/06/2023 21:34

Really? 8 mph?

No it was technically 6 miles away but because of the way the land/road were, you had to drive about 20 miles (much of which was on narrow lanes).

I was trying explain how it differs from London, even the areas without public transport are not that remote

nebulae · 01/06/2023 23:34

Oh I see, so 6 miles as the crow flies.

It'll quieten down again before the full onslaught resumes.

WestwardHo1 · 02/06/2023 10:44

PaulineG1990 · 01/06/2023 17:21

We find the problem with Cornwall is that the roads aren’t wide enough. You would have thought that with all the tourist influx in the past few years they would have widened some of them by now to accommodate the modern SUV.

Ah you're taking the piss aren't you?

Otherwise yes! Let's widen all the roads for the 4x4s! Splendid idea!

EffortlessDesmond · 02/06/2023 12:55

Traffic news earlier suggests that the exodus from the SW has begun... jams in all the usual spots.

justasking111 · 02/06/2023 14:48

The weather is so glorious in N Wales the exodus is delayed, the weekenders are commuting here now. So it's both ways traffic. Trouble is we've road works galore adding to the problems.
