Clothes for short developed girls?

FawnFrenchieMum · 29/05/2023 10:14

Can anyone suggest where to buy clothes for my developed 10 year old DD? She’s still pretty short (around 140-143cm, I think) but well developed. She has boobs, hips and bum (she’s started her periods too, not fat in anyway, just developed into a woman’s shape).

We have been trying to get her some new clothes for a few weeks now and really struggling. Girls trousers in up to 12-13/13-14 don’t fasten. Ladies are too long. Girls dresses are far too tight around her boobs but ladies are either too long or too low under her arms.

She is living in Nike Pro’s / yoga pants and this minute. Which is fine for every day but we’re going on holiday soon and have a few events coming up. She’s wanting some nicer / going out clothes. Its also making her really self conscious when every time we go shopping nothing fits!

Anyone else come across this, got any suggestions? Should shops offer different waist sizes for pre-teen girls?

Try Primark ladies size 6 or 8.
New look, Zara or H & M petite ladies have been OK for my shorter daughters

She is more like a 10 than a 6 or 8. That’s fine for tops but dresses and trousers just don’t fit in other places.

tbf, I’ve not overly looked at petite ranges. That could be a good shout. Very limiting though.

Developed is such a creepy term

surely you go into a clothes shop and find the ones that fit. If you can’t manage ask someone in the store for help

Curtains70 · 29/05/2023 10:25

Next petite is good, some lovely summer dresses too

CarpetSlipper · 29/05/2023 10:26

Try petite women’s clothes (I think New Look do an extra short in jeans and Top Shop petite on ASOS are also quite short in my experience). “Ankle grazer” or 7/8 length jeans in petite are worth a try. New Look online usually has a lot of options. Next is also good for petite clothes.

What term would you prefer? And as stated in the OP, we’ve done lots of ‘looking in shops’ and lots of trying on. Most of which leaving DD upset and self conscious!

I'd go the other way, and try tall ranges in size 6/8 - at least for tops.

I'm very curvy, have been since I was 10, and found that length was more useful than anything.

Sorry but I just find it really creepy when adults talk about their children in terms of their sexual development. You might just be a normal mum so apologies if so. But I would never refer to my children using that word. I’d say if they are bigger they need bigger clothes. But I’m prepared to accept I’m in the wrong here

CornedBeef451 · 29/05/2023 10:37

DD wears M&S extra short for jeans and trousers and Primark t-shirts fit ok.

H&M is sometimes good for occasional things and Apricot was brilliant for dresses. They have their own stores or a section in New Look.

I would think ‘bigger’ meant fatter / plus sized etc. Those options don’t really fit either as she was a waist etc. She’s basically a woman’s body at child’s height! She would love nothing more to still be able to go pick children’s clothes like her friends but it’s just not working for us. Seem’s petite woman’s range maybe the way to go.

If she's started her periods, she's unlikely to get much taller so it might be worth having some nice clothes altered to fit.
Find a a good seamstress and have a chat with them before you buy anything so they can tell you what to look out for that will make alterations easier.

It isn't a sexual post though is it, it is about her starting her development into an adult at a slightly earlier stage hence the question

It isn't about just being bigger as I am sure most people are aware clothes come on a range of sizes - it is specifically about clothes which are a different shape than commonly available as marketed to 10 year olds

The only person on this entire thread sexualising the discussion is you

ZillionDayStreak · 29/05/2023 10:46

My short teen likes Hollister, New Look, Primark. For basics like black trousers, M&S extra short works (though annoyingly is never in stock in store and often not even available online).

Pics · 29/05/2023 10:47

'Developed' isn't a sexual term - I don't know why you think it is. It also isn't the same as 'bigger'. It's really hard to get clothes thst are suitable for growing busts, in smaller sizes that aren't too long or huge overall. Developed describes a child fir whom the 3xternal changes of puberty have changed their body shape - the OP violent have fitted a long description of this in the subject line and calling it creepy is a reflection of either trying to stir upset, poke at someone who is asking for help or your own rather odd connotations.

It's a really hard thing to find and I struggled as a child and gor my girls but not quite this early. If you can, it might be worth looking at the few stores that do teen clothing fir older girls(like M and S and H and M) but be prepared to look at shorter styles of trousers and 3/4 length sleeves in the summer that can be worn as full length. I also have looked at Petite ranges from shops that have been okay.

Mumof1andacat · 29/05/2023 10:50

I developed earlier than most, and I have always been short. I'm 5 ft. I still now hem a lot of trousers. You just get use to it. Bon marche have jeans and trousers at 25 inche inside leg. Yes, it could be argued it's an old ladies' shop, but if you're looking for basic trousers for school or a straight cut pair of jeans, then it's good for that sort of thing.

TemporaryNaming · 29/05/2023 10:52

Hi OP my DD is the same, albeit fits into children's clothes but is busty- she's about the same height as your DD and goes through stages of being curvier & then really slim but does have wider hips. Holiday styles I've found that suit her shape are play suits with elasticated waists. Then they aren't tight at all but still nice and summery. I am happy to PM you some photos of her current wardrobe if it helps. She also likes cycle shorts & nike tees, cropped jumpsuits. She likes to dress quite grown up so nothing is babyish. I also find denim shorts difficult as they just dont sit nicely, anything high waisted is better I find! For school uniform I get her plus size to fit over her chest. She does have hips but is slim so it's a bit of a nightmare!

I understand you now. It’s just me. I get triggered by adults talking of children’s bodies in a sexual way and the term developed is something I avoid. But I accept that’s my own reaction and you are genuinely asking for advice.

Utterlypeanuterly · 29/05/2023 10:58

My dd is 5ft and curvy. She is older than your dd. She likes Asos petite. Her tween/early teens were tricky for clothes. She usually wore leggings and hoodie.

mysonsmother82 · 29/05/2023 11:02

My SD 13 is a similar shape to your DD. She gets a lot of her clothes from Tkmaxx and JD Sports. I gave her a load of my size 8 jeans (never going to fit me again) they were abit long but I just hemmed the bottom. She also shops at Urban Outfitters and Zara a lot. Also Vinted.

NEmama · 29/05/2023 11:24

@Candymay you're wrong in that it isn't just bigger clothes. Op was referring to the shape of the clothes needed.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 29/05/2023 12:15

I’ve had exactly the same issues with clothes for my 11 year old for the past year or so. She’s been a rapid developer, extremely curvy and short, slim, but not particularly petite. A really awkward shape. Most of her friends are skinny and tall. Most women’s clothes are too long in the arms and legs.

I’ve found GAP teen quite good, their current style is baggy. John Lewis Anyday range has some good stuff, also M&S ladies short length (I think they actually do extra-short in some styles) for jeans, trousers and sportswear, their 7/8 or cropped leggings are good. Primark is good for sweats and joggers, the quality is not great, but it’s fine for play. Any sort of sportswear is a lifesaver.

Her current favourites are expensive size 10 wide leg, high waist jeans of mine that I got too fat for (I’m a short arse) and Sweaty Betty 7/8 leggings (also mine ) that look great on her - so second hand or Vinted might be an option for that kind of stuff?

Thank you! I haven’t looked at GAP so that’s a definite option. Sports wear is her go to, just looking for some ‘nicer’ options for our holidays and a few everts coming up.

Jeans we haven’t yet found a single pair. Maybe we need to give M&S another try. She got a bit frustrating in there that it was ‘old lady clothes’ so we didn’t spend too long looking.

And yes to all her friends still being tall and thin! She’s quite self conscious about it already without adding lots of unsuccessful shopping trips to it.

Where are you buying the play suits? She had loads of those last summer but all too tight for her this year and not yet seen any nice replacements.
