To wear my dress this way?

I have a lovely blue dress that has a large cut out tear drop in the back. Till now I’ve worn a black or cream vest underneath the dress to cover the back of my bra as the cut out shows the whole of my back bra strap. But the fabric of the dress is light- it’s a summer dress - and the vest feels like an additional layer I would rather do without!

I’ve treated myself to some lovely new colourful bras recently from Lemonade Dolls and Lounge and have been toying with the idea of losing the vest and leaving my back bra strap on show. Would this look cheap and tacky or OK?

This is one of the bras

The other one is red.

Advice please!

Perfect. A bright strap is fine to show- it’s just that greysludge colour of old bra strap that looks grim.

TenoringBehind · 29/05/2023 10:59

I wouldn’t. It’s not a look I like.

BashfulClam · 29/05/2023 11:00

I tend to wear a bandeau bra. Much nicer when on show.

BrutusMcDogface · 29/05/2023 11:10

I must be living in the dark ages as I didn’t realise this has been a trend “for years”.

in the 90s as per a pp I wore bright bra straps but with strappy tops rather than anything backless or low backed. I like the low backed bra someone above found on Amazon. Think a backless dress would look better with the skin on show otherwise you look like you just threw a dress on over some underwear without thinking if they went together or not.

RudsyFarmer · 29/05/2023 11:20

I think you’re not going to know until you put it on and have a look from the back (or get someone to photograph you from the back). Very often things look great from the front but in (my case) all I can see from the back is ugly rolls 😫

MarkWithaC · 29/05/2023 11:28

I think it depends on the dress. If it’s a casual/sporty/athleisure style then it probably looks fine, but anything more elegant or formal and I don’t think it’d work. Even with a sporty dress I think I’d go for a wider back strap, more like a sports bra style.

Hairpinleg · 29/05/2023 12:05

Nice bra, but with a backless dress it could just look like you didn't have an appropriate bra to wear. I don't like back straps on show.

squidgybits · 29/05/2023 12:07

There are many bras available to be worn without showing/spoiling an outfit
Personally I think bras showing is quite cheap and tacky looking
You might as well go all Madonna and wear the bra over the dress or not wear the dress at all
Waiting to be flamed but stand firmly by my opinion

Katiesaidthat · 29/05/2023 12:11

It is a no from me, I think it is really tacky.

MsSquiz · 29/05/2023 12:16

It very much depends on the person and the dress, so a photo would probably help.

Also, for the pp who said it's a subscription site. They do have a subscription service, but you can also just buy as and when you like

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 29/05/2023 12:23

I wouldn't wear a backless dress with a bra, my dresses have light support under the breasts.

tuvamoodyson · 29/05/2023 12:42

No, not for me. I don’t like to see lingerie on show.

Mosaic123 · 29/05/2023 12:52

Not the best dress to buy if you are generous of chest.

MumblesParty · 29/05/2023 12:57

To me it would look like you hadn’t realised everyone could see your bra. But then I’m 55 so probably out of touch with fashion weirdness!

sonjadog · 29/05/2023 13:23

You should get one that would match your dress at least. I don't think a green and pink bra will look great with a blue dress tbh.

SparklyBlackKitten · 29/05/2023 13:27

T t t tacky

ididntwanttodoit · 29/05/2023 13:29

I had a dress like that once. I created a flesh-coloured lining for the back by cutting up a camisole top and stitching it in place (much in the way ice dancers do with low-look tops. worked a treat. Not a fan of "look at my bra"

dwightschrutebeets · 29/05/2023 13:29

That's so pretty! Show it off!

FelicityFlops · 29/05/2023 13:37

Quite honestly I don't think wearing anything that exposes your underwear is good. It looks tacky. But that is just my opinion.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 29/05/2023 14:22

It's too hot and you are an adult. Put yourself and your comfort first. So long as you feel good about it then nobody else's opinions matters. I've recently bought a blouse with a large cutout at the back and im looking out for something like this in my size to wear under it.

TheNewSchmoo · 29/05/2023 14:37

It is your choice, but I don't think it would look very nice, for my tastes, so I wouldn't

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 14:43

Surely the whole point of a backless dress is that it is backless. Having a bra strap go across the middle would just spoil the look IMO.

I am of generation that prefers underwear to be hidden. The clue is in the name - underwear.

Precipice · 29/05/2023 14:43

I think back bra straps look awful when they show.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 29/05/2023 15:12

I wouldn't, no. Each to their own but I think it looks awful.

Could you get some fabric and sew it over the hole from the inside?

Strawberrypicnic · 29/05/2023 15:13

Im not sure it would be very aesthetically pleasing. You might get away with a simple strappy bikini top under it but that depends on how formal the dress is and where you're going to wear it (on holiday or to the park would be okay but not anywhere else really). On a broader note, so few dresses now are bra-friendly! Even ones that look like they could/should be from the front. I don't mind going braless sometimes, in the right style, but I don't want to be forced to every time.
