Should you take dogs out in this heat at lunch

Went to a food festival today and saw about 10 dogs there in 23degree heat. To get from the car park there was a long tarmac road. The festival also had no shade or water I did see one owner with a dog bowel.

Absolutely not. I despair at people, I really do.

RavenclawLuna · 28/05/2023 21:11

No, absolutely not! What is wrong with people.

MuffinToSeeHere · 28/05/2023 21:14

No of course not but idiots won't be told otherwise.

If I ruled the world I'd make their owners walk around with no shoes or socks on!

Paperlate · 28/05/2023 21:14

23 degrees is not exactly boiling hot.

Blondewithredlips · 28/05/2023 21:15

No

Mum2jenny · 28/05/2023 21:16

Our pup has been in and out the house all day and no problems, although it’s def not 23 degrees here

greenacrylicpaint · 28/05/2023 21:17

honestly, beliw 30 is fine.

CC4712 · 28/05/2023 21:18

One owner had a dog bowel 😳

We taken our puppy to festival/fayres, but always take water and she is small enough to pick up if there was tarmac. I don't think people realise how hot their paws can get.

Kleiber · 28/05/2023 21:19

23°C is hot now?

Let me tell you about summer heatwaves…

Spendonsend · 28/05/2023 21:19

I think between 20 and 23 it depends a lot on the breed according to the charts. But lack of water is an issue. It seems a definite no to over 25 degrees.

myheadisspinningoutofcontrol · 28/05/2023 21:20

It's not particularly hot!

pookiedoodlepuppy · 28/05/2023 21:22

Well to be honest it is not very disability friendly if there is no facilities for those with assistance dogs , so maybe you should report to the relevant authorities for disability discrimination .

Yes when you are wearing a fur coat. Try it and come back and let us know!!

EvilElsa · 28/05/2023 21:23

Blenheim?
Was absolutely packed with dogs today at their food festival, was far too hot and the vast majority looked uncomfortable. There was tree shade but I didn't see many utilising it, most were being dragged from stall to stall in the heat which was worse as surrounded by ovens and bbqs. Our vets put out heat stroke advice for dogs this weekend which has useful advice.

It depends on the breed. I know someone who has a rescue dog from Spain who would be fine at this temp. My own dog (an elderly black greyhound) - not so much.

drumandthebass · 28/05/2023 21:23

Crikey, 23 degrees is not that hot.

23 degrees is not exactly boiling hot.

It is when you've got a bloody fur coat on!

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 28/05/2023 21:24

Ah, the first time I’ve seen “in this heat” this year.

When it’s actually hot weather it gets tagged onto every other sentence it seems. What are you having for tea (in this heat), where are you taking the kids out to (in this heat) is anyone else 7 months pregnant (in this heat) how should I style my hair (in this heat) and so on and so on.

This is not actually hot weather. it is just weather.

Amusingly enough I have been in the garden for most of the day without any shoes on - tarmac and all.

MinPinSins · 28/05/2023 21:24

It depends on the breed surely? I've got two short hair single coated small breed dogs, and it never would occur to me that 23 degrees is too hot. Obviously being sensible to mainly walk in the shade, regular access to water and check ground surfaces, but 23 degrees isn't that hot.

Justcallmebebes · 28/05/2023 21:26

Oh come on. 23c is v mild so of course dogs should be taken out. You do know that many, many dogs live and survive in the tropics

toomuchlaundry · 28/05/2023 21:27

Our dog hasn’t had a walk all week but they are elderly and has a heart condition so need to be careful

FiveShelties · 28/05/2023 21:29

23C hot? Too funny. I have a Sheltie and she just loves being in the sun, when it gets to around 28C she does not lie too long in it and over 30C she lies in the shade.

I love when people use this argument it's bonkers. Yes of course many dogs live in countries much warmer as do many people it doesn't mean that those living in the UK are not at risk if out in hot weather because they are not acclimated to it.

In this country many owners don't take precautions in hot weather because they spend 10 months or more of the year not thinking about such things unlike those in warmer climates.

Paperlate · 28/05/2023 21:31

23 degrees is not hot weather though.

LaDamaDeElche · 28/05/2023 21:31

23 degrees isn't hot. What on earth do you think dogs do in hot countries where it's 23 degrees during the coolest part of the day?
