Should you take dogs out in this heat at lunch

Went to a food festival today and saw about 10 dogs there in 23degree heat. To get from the car park there was a long tarmac road. The festival also had no shade or water I did see one owner with a dog bowel.

It's currently 9 degrees where I live, with a maximum high of 17 degrees forecast for the rest of this week. The hysterical posters should move to South Yorkshire.

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 08:54

This infographic is useful.
Basically, 20 - 23 degrees is fine for most healthy dogs. If they are exercised too rigorously, are overweight or have breathing issues then they would struggle.

I am baffled as to why anyone would buy a dog with such issues (rescue dogs excepted of course).

When is too hot to walk a dog? Click to find out.

Heat stroke in dogs is almost always preventable, but it's critical to know when they're at risk. Our infographic reveals when is it too hot to walk a dog.

gogohmm · 29/05/2023 08:56

23 isn't that hot. It is breed dependent tk a certain extent. As long as the owners brought water most are fine

Inastatus · 29/05/2023 09:00

I agree that 23 degrees is not too hot for a dog and where we are there is a constant breeze which is keeping the air cool. My dog was sunbathing in the garden most of yesterday.

gogohmm · 29/05/2023 09:01

My collie isn't a fan of warm weather (thick coated, loves snow) but he did just fine for an hour or so yesterday, hes lying outside sunbathing now in the morning cool

Scalottia · 29/05/2023 09:10

ToeJammed · 29/05/2023 06:33

Yes, it's too hot.
Dogs can suffer heatstroke really quickly in those temps, especially in full sun.
Certain breeds of dogs can't regulate their core temperature as well as other breeds can either.
It makes me angry when I see someone walking their dog on hot concrete or tarmac in those temps.
Irresponsible idiots.

Fucking hell, it makes you angry to see a dog out in 23 degrees?? Settle down.

mondaytosunday · 29/05/2023 09:29

That's not hot. I wouldn't take a dog for a jog at 30 plus heat, but really, dogs live in Spain and Australia where heat can go above 40 regularly.

Motorina · 29/05/2023 10:09

Last year, when it was 40, I was hiding in the shade. My two youngsters insisted on playing biteyface on the lawn, in the full sun. And my old girl lay on the patio in full sun and baked herself.

They’re fit, slim, and from a breed designed to work hard in all weathers. If I didn’t walk them they’d be bored stiff, and would probably self-entertain by disembowelling the sofa or plotting world domination.

Dogs - like people - vary.

Whydoineedaname · 29/05/2023 10:12

I’ve a pug x staffie and a foxhound, admittedly pugs don’t do well in heat. They both struggle in any heat and pant

Kleiber · 29/05/2023 11:09

NBLarsen · 28/05/2023 23:29

23 is hot for dogs.

I sincerely hope you don't have one.

It’s really not a big deal.

LuvSmallDogs · 29/05/2023 13:29

As one of those people who exclusively wears flip flops as soon as the rain stops, it's quick and easy for me to check tarmac/paving with my own foot when I take the dog out. It really doesn't get uncomfortably hot as easily or often as those FB posts make out.

vivainsomnia · 29/05/2023 13:38

Sounds like you are looking to shame others to make you feel better! 23 degrees is not hot especially with school breeze which we have at the moment.

Our dog drinks out of our own water bottles. Tarmac is nowhere near boiling at the moment.

You are being ridiculous.

Bloopsie · 29/05/2023 05:51

23 degrees- heat? What, its mild summer weather.

why are british people making themselves
look like imbeciles, in the winter -1 and a dusting of snow is catastrophe that stops the country- where europe and america etc have -30 and over a metre of snow ,23 degrees in the summer is mild seesh people

Exactly. These 'OMG it's soooo hot at 22 C, I am about to pass out' posters, are the SAME ONES who squeal with fright at the sight of an inch of snow in winter. They won't drive in any snow or ice, and they crank up the heating to 27 C, as soon as the temperature drops to below 5 C outside. And then start posting threads about their extortionate energy bills. 😆

KimberleyClark · 29/05/2023 13:40

Paperlate · 28/05/2023 21:14

23 degrees is not exactly boiling hot.

It is if you’re wearing a fur coat.

EbonyRaven · 29/05/2023 13:40

Actually make that 10 degrees outside. They crank up the heating to 27 C when it drops below 10 C!

KimberleyClark · 29/05/2023 13:41

KimberleyClark · 29/05/2023 13:40

It is if you’re wearing a fur coat.

And especially so if you’re a black dog.

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 13:41

KimberleyClark · 29/05/2023 13:40

It is if you’re wearing a fur coat.

But it isn't a winter fur coat like a mink coat. Why do you think that animal moult at this time of year?

EbonyRaven · 29/05/2023 13:42

KimberleyClark · 29/05/2023 13:40

It is if you’re wearing a fur coat.

🙄Tell me you know fuck-all about dogs, without telling me you know fuck all about dogs.

It's not HOT. The dog is USED to its 'fur coat,' and as has been said repeatedly on this thread, the fur creates a layer of cool air. A dog in 23 C temps is NOT going to be suffering. FFS!

EbonyRaven · 29/05/2023 13:43

KimberleyClark · 29/05/2023 13:41

And especially so if you’re a black dog.

😂 You are the gift that keeps on giving.

myheadisspinningoutofcontrol · 28/05/2023 21:20

It's not particularly hot!

It is if you’re wearing a fur coat. 🙄

Our old dog was adopted when we lived in a very, very hot country. She loved the heat with a passion, and wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at 23 degree heat.

Our dog before that hated anything warmer than about 18 degrees and wouldn’t have been at all comfortable in the heat.

Our current dog is a total sun worshipper if she’s relaxing, so she loves to lie out in the heat, but would get too hot if she was walking around.

It depends entirely on the breed and the dog and what precautions you take.

This

My dog is elderly now and has never liked the heat. Anything above about 21 degrees and she struggles. She was the same when she was much younger, I have never really taken her for days out at shows/fayres or festivals as she doesn't enjoy the heat. She's much much happier asleep at home in the cool.

markingtimes · 29/05/2023 14:25

I follow charts like this to be safe - double coated dogs so I am a bit cautious

This is for walking etc not lazing in the garden

Should you take dogs out in this heat at lunch
coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 29/05/2023 14:30

It is if you’re wearing a fur coat.

Actually @RestingMurderousFace, fur coats help keep them cool in hot weather, as well as warm in cold weather.

Scalottia · 29/05/2023 16:37

A lot of posters on here don't seem to understand how a dog's 'fur' coat works. Maybe do some research.

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 13:41

But it isn't a winter fur coat like a mink coat. Why do you think that animal moult at this time of year?

Not all dogs moult
